Delphine quickly hung up the phone and came out to find Nicholas had already brushed his teeth, washed his face, and dressed neatly. His pretty little face was full of helplessness as he softly said, "Mommy, I've done my best."
In the children's room of the guest bedroom, Benjamin had rolled from the head of the bed to the foot, his little head buried under the blanket, his tiny feet sticking out, curled up into a small ball.
Delphine saw this and couldn't help but laugh. She pulled the little girl up, gently kissed her, and said, "Benjamin, your Daddy's here."
Sleeping soundly, Benjamin suddenly sat up, fumbling blindly for her little jacket, and in a soft and muffled voice mumbled, "Daddy, morning."
Nicholas looked on, dumbfounded, then reached out to pass Benjamin her Mi Rabbit jacket. The little girl, straining her ears but not hearing Daddy's voice, let her tiny body go limp and burrowed back into the blankets to continue sleeping.
