"We're not the same as before. There has been some development between us." She didn't directly state anything, but instead used this to test her mom's reaction.
"That's good news, you two spending time together will only get better and better." Sophia clearly misinterpreted Alice's words, hearing there had been developments between her and Benjamin Shaw, she naively assumed it was something positive, without considering any other possibilities.
Just moments ago, Alice was happy that Sophia Wood understood her, but now hearing her mom say this, her mood shifted. Wasn't her meaning obvious? How could her mom think like that?
