"Dexter DeShawn? T-BUG, I didn't expect your fixer friend to be that guy."

Sitting inside the heavily modded Herrera, Jack, who was driving today, still couldn't quite believe that the infamous Dexter DeShawn was someone T-BUG had worked with.

"What about him? Is he someone special?"

Jack had been in the merc game longer than anyone else in the car. Compared to him, the others didn't know much about fixers. They mostly waited to be contacted or recommended. V, curious now, leaned in.

"Who is this guy that's got you so surprised?"

"You guys wouldn't know… right, makes sense. DeShawn disappeared from Night City around the first half of '75. Oliver hadn't even joined the gang yet, Karl had just arrived, and V—well, you were still back with your nomad tribe."

Jack shifted gears as he explained.

"I didn't know him personally, but back in the day, there was this saying in the merc circles: Dexter has the instincts of an assassin and the experience to match. Anyone who does business with him is destined to hit it big. As a low-level merc back then, hearing that... man, DeShawn sounded like a legend. I dreamed about working a job for him and finally making it big."

"Sounds like hype," V muttered. "No one makes you rich just by working with them—not even Rogue could claim something like that."

"If he was so amazing, why'd he vanish in early '75? And now suddenly he's crawling back?"

"Who knows? Maybe he was just on vacation," Jack shrugged. "When he left the city, I was still just a rookie. The only fixer I even knew was Padre. I didn't have the pull to know what the hell was going on with someone like DeShawn."

"T-BUG, you knew him best. What's the story with Dexter DeShawn?"

V cut straight to the point, wanting details straight from the source.

"He was one of the fixers I worked with the most," T-BUG's voice echoed through the car's comms. "Always paid well, jobs were clean and well-organized—he was reliable."

She continued, calmly:

"In terms of street-level fixers, he was probably just a step below Rogue. Not saying the others like Captain or Regina weren't good, but back then, Dexter DeShawn was hot. Everyone wanted to get a job from him. Maybe calling him a 'kingmaker' is an exaggeration, but I know more than one merc who retired early thanks to a few of his contracts."

"Even you're saying that?"

Now even V looked interested. "So the guy really had that kind of rep?"

"They used to call him the Black Buddha of Big Payouts," Jack said, half-joking. "Well… maybe that's a stretch. But like T-BUG said—he was generous. You can't fake that."

"If he's that generous, maybe I can get behind this," said Oliver, who'd been listening quietly. "I hate fixers like Faraday—cheap bastards. A fixer who pays well? That's someone mercs actually respect."

"So, what's he offering for this job?" V looked to Karl, who was negotiating directly with Dexter through T-BUG's contact feed.

"To be honest?" Karl stared at the updated account balance. "He's being very generous."

"For a simple escort mission, the upfront deposit is 80k. Total payout is 200k. For a fixer escort gig… that's pretty damn high."

Karl's expression grew more thoughtful.

"But… it's just an escort mission. Does it really warrant that kind of cash?"

He frowned slightly, confused. "All he wants is to sneak into Night City from Pacifica without going through checkpoint scans. Not easy, but still… does that really justify a 200k payout?"

"Not sure about the details, but I did hear something," T-BUG offered.

Though her partnership with DeShawn was mostly transactional—built on fat payouts—she'd heard some rumors before he disappeared.

"Word is, Dexter botched a job for the Voodoo Boys in Pacifica. Fled the city to avoid their retaliation."

"So now he thinks things have cooled down and wants to sneak back in?" Karl chuckled. "Doesn't sound very 'legendary fixer' to me."

"Everyone screws up sometime," Jack added. "But it was the Voodoo Boys. God knows what kind of crazy shit those Haitian netrunner cultists might pull if you cross them."

Then he blinked. Something clicked in his head.

"Wait… Pacifica… the Voodoo Boys are based there, right? So DeShawn's trying to reenter the city from their turf, and paying this much to do it..."

"Yeah," Karl nodded. "I figured it out too. He's trying to make a comeback—and wants to use us to blast his way back into Night City and reclaim his name."

Karl leaned back, almost impressed.

"Smart guy. Fall in Pacifica, rise again in Pacifica. Kinda poetic."

"Well," said Oliver, "he's lucky he paid enough. Honestly, that kind of instinct does sound like assassin's intuition."

Once it became clear that the biggest threat would just be the Voodoo Boys, Oliver relaxed.

Seriously? After all that drama... it's just the Voodoo Boys?

Escorting someone through Pacifica might be risky—but with a payout like that?

Totally worth it.
