Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 38: The Ravager Beneath the Outpost

The stone floor split open.

Not cracked, split.

A line tore across the circular chamber, racing beneath their feet as frost poured from the widening gap. The pillar in the center shuddered once.

Then again.

The entire outpost groaned.

"Back!"

Fray seized the nearest shoulder and threw Lyra away from the center.

A hand emerged from the darkness.

It was too large.

Frost-coated fingers dug into the stone, each one thick enough to crush a man's torso. The creature pulled itself upward with deliberate force, dragging broken masonry with it.

Shad stepped back.

His eyes narrowed.

The thing's presence was enormous.

Not Realm Two.

Not even close.

He felt the density of its Flow before seeing its full body.

Realm Three.

Tier C.

Five Layers.

A Ravager.

Shad's expression barely changed.

Too much for them.

Lyra, Orin, and Garrin had already realized it.

They didn't understand the exact difference, but fear had taken over their faces.

The creature rose.

Its body resembled a massive quadruped stretched unnaturally toward a humanoid shape, covered in pale, hardened growths that looked less like skin and more like old layers of compressed ice. Its head had no visible eyes.

Yet it looked directly at them.

A low sound rolled from its chest.

Then it moved.

The stone beneath it exploded.

"Scatter!"

Fray vanished first.

The Ravager's forelimb swept through the space where he had been standing.

BOOM!

A section of the wall disappeared.

Lyra's face tightened.

"That was one hit—"

"Don't stand there staring!" Fray shouted.

Another limb formed.

Not from flesh.

From ice.

A jagged extension burst from the creature's shoulder and swung sideways like a blade.

Lyra thrust out her hand.

"Vector!"

The construct changed direction.

Only slightly.

The ice blade curved past her cheek instead of splitting her skull.

She stumbled backward.

"Again!"

A second construct formed beneath the creature.

Then a third.

Ice didn't simply surround the Ravager.

It obeyed it.

Walls, blades, hooked limbs, shields and spikes emerged wherever the creature needed them.

Garrin slammed his fist into the ground.

Three invisible marks appeared across the floor.

"Drive it left!"

Orin planted his feet.

"Anchor!"

His Flow surged through his body.

The collapsing ground beneath him stopped moving.

Garrin struck one of his marks.

The stored pressure detonated.

BOOM!

The blast struck the Ravager's hind leg.

For the first time, the creature staggered.

Garrin's eyes widened.

"It worked!"

"No," Shad said.

He was watching the creature.

"It noticed."

The Ravager looked toward Garrin.

Not confused.

Measuring.

Then it moved.

Too fast.

Garrin barely turned before an ice spike erupted beneath him.

Shad kicked him sideways.

The spike tore through the floor instead.

Garrin crashed against the wall.

"You—"

"Move."

The Ravager charged.

Fray met it.

The collision sounded like thunder.

Fray's foot dug through the floor as he stopped the creature's first strike with both arms. The impact drove him backward several meters.

His coat tore.

He smiled.

"Finally."

Fear spread from him.

The Ravager's movement slowed.

Not much.

But a fraction was enough.

Fray twisted beneath the creature's arm, drove his elbow into its ribs and followed with a kick that launched the beast through two stone columns.

The pillars collapsed.

Lyra stared.

"That power…"

"Don't admire him," Shad said.

"Survive."

The rubble exploded.

The Ravager emerged.

Its chest was cracked.

Ice flowed across the damaged area.

The cracks vanished.

Fray's smile faded.

"Regeneration?"

"Construct replacement," Shad said.

Fray glanced at him.

"You're sure?"

Shad nodded.

The creature attacked again.

This time it changed its rhythm.

Its physical limb came first.

An ice blade followed.

Then another construct formed behind Fray.

Fray ducked.

The first strike missed.

He twisted.

The second missed.

Then the third came from below.

Fray's eyes widened.

He jumped.

The construct followed.

He grabbed its edge with both hands.

The ice shrieked against his palms.

Instead of fighting the force, Fray pulled.

The creature's own momentum carried the construct past him.

Fray swung his entire body around it.

The ice tore free.

He landed hard and immediately drove his shoulder into the Ravager's jaw.

The beast's head snapped sideways.

Fray followed with a knee.

Then another.

Then a brutal strike to the throat.

The Ravager stumbled.

"Now!"

Lyra redirected a fallen beam.

Garrin marked its surface.

Orin anchored the beam in place.

Garrin detonated the mark.

The entire mass of stone slammed into the creature.

For several seconds, nothing moved.

Lyra breathed hard.

"Did we—"

The rubble exploded outward.

The Ravager emerged.

Unharmed.

Garrin's expression fell.

Fray landed between them.

"Stop trying to beat it."

Garrin frowned.

"We have to do something."

"You are doing something."

Fray wiped blood from the corner of his mouth.

"You're just not strong enough for it to matter yet."

The Ravager lunged.

Fray met it again.

This time the creature forced him backward.

One step.

Two.

Three.

Its claws scraped across his arms.

Fray twisted the attack aside and slammed his forehead into the creature's face.

The Ravager recoiled.

Fray grinned through blood.

"Got you."

Instigation.

The creature's killing impulse sharpened.

It abandoned the safer distance and committed its entire body toward him.

Fray suddenly turned.

The Ravager crashed into a weakened wall.

Fray had deliberately led it there.

The structure collapsed over its forelimbs.

He moved before the rubble finished falling.

Fear surged again.

The Ravager's response slowed.

Fray seized the opportunity.

He tore into the exposed limb.

Ice shattered.

Flesh followed.

The creature roared.

The sound shook dust from the ceiling.

Then its remaining arm slammed into Fray's chest.

CRACK.

Fray flew across the chamber.

"Fray!"

Shad moved.

Only once.

An ice spear aimed at Lyra vanished beneath his hand.

Cold spread across its surface.

The spear shattered.

Lyra stared at him.

Shad had already turned away.

"Behind you."

She barely raised her arm.

The Ravager's next strike hit.

Her ability manage to bend the attack sideways.

Not enough.

Lyra was still thrown across the room.

Shad caught her before her head struck the wall.

She looked at him, shocked.

"You…"

"Stand."

He released her.

Across the chamber, Orin was struggling beneath a collapsing section of ceiling.

Garrin ran toward him.

"Orin!"

The Ravager saw them.

Its body lowered.

Shad's eyes hardened.

No.

Snow spread beneath his boots.

The creature charged.

Shad stepped forward.

He didn't unleash enough power to stop it.

He only made the ground beneath one foot slick.

The Ravager slipped.

Barely.

Its attack shifted by inches.

That was enough.

It missed Orin.

The floor behind him erupted instead.

Fray came crashing back into the fight.

He grabbed one of the creature's ice limbs and wrenched it sideways.

"RUN!"

The group moved.

But Garrin stopped.

His eyes had found something.

The fractured section of the Ravager's shoulder.

The ice there was different.

A thin pulse moved beneath it.

Garrin stared.

"The core…"

Fray looked back.

"What?"

"The constructs aren't forming from everywhere."

Garrin swallowed.

"They're coming from that point."

The Ravager turned toward him.

Garrin realized his mistake.

It had heard him.

Its body shifted.

An opening appeared.

Too perfect.

Garrin charged.

"GARRIN!"

Lyra screamed.

The Ravager allowed him through.

Garrin struck the damaged shoulder.

One mark.

Two.

Three.

Pressure detonated inside the construct.

For the first time, the Ravager's body ruptured.

The creature screamed.

Garrin smiled.

Then an ice blade emerged from inside the wound.

His smile disappeared.

The blade punched through his chest somehow missing his vital parts as it tossed him aside.

Silence.

The construct withdrew.

Garrin remained standing for half a second.

Then his body fell.

"GARRIN!"

Lyra ran toward him.

Orin followed.

Shad's eyes narrowed.

The Ravager lowered its head.

Preparing to finish them.

Shad stepped forward.

Cold gathered around his hand.

"Don't."

But Lyra was already running.

Garrin's eyes fixed on the fractured shoulder.

There.

The ice around the wound was moving differently.

Not healing.

Rebuilding.

A thin pulse traveled beneath the construct before spreading outward into the creature's other limbs.

Garrin's breathing steadied.

"The constructs aren't coming from everywhere."

Fray looked toward him.

"What?"

"That point."

Garrin pointed at the Ravager's shoulder.

"Everything comes from there."

The Ravager turned.

Its head lowered.

Garrin's stomach tightened.

It understood.

"Garrin," Lyra said quietly.

He looked back at her.

For the first time since the creature emerged, he smiled.

"I think I found it."

"Then don't be stupid."

"I won't."

He ran straight back to the ravager.

The Ravager lunged.

Garrin didn't slow.

A claw came down.

He slipped beneath it.

An ice blade formed from the creature's elbow.

He twisted past that too.

Another appeared behind him.

Lyra reacted.

"Garrin!"

She redirected the blade.

It changed direction by inches and buried itself in the floor.

Garrin kept running.

Orin slammed his foot down.

"Anchor!"

The ground beneath Garrin stabilized as the creature's charge shattered the stone around him.

Garrin reached the shoulder.

His hand struck the ice.

A Pressure Mark appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

The Ravager's body convulsed.

Garrin gritted his teeth.

"Now!"

He detonated all three.

The shoulder exploded.

The Ravager screamed.

Its constructs shattered simultaneously.

The massive body staggered.

For a moment, the entire chamber went still.

Garrin stood beneath it, breathing hard.

Lyra laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because she couldn't believe they had done it.

"We got it."

Orin stared at the creature.

"We actually—"

Garrin turned toward them.

His grin widened.

"See?"

Then something pierced his chest.

His body jerked.

The smile vanished.

Lyra stopped breathing.

A narrow blade of ice protruded from Garrin's back.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

The Ravager had rebuilt the weapon inside the wound Garrin had created.

It had let him damage it.

It had waited.

Garrin looked down.

His fingers touched the ice.

They trembled.

"No…"

The blade withdrew.

Garrin collapsed.

"GARRIN!"

Lyra was already moving.

Orin reached him first.

He dropped to his knees and caught Garrin before his head struck the stone.

"Garrin."

No answer.

"Garrin!"

He shook him.

Garrin's eyes opened.

Barely.

He looked at Orin.

Then at Lyra.

His mouth moved.

Nothing came out.

Blood filled his lips.

Lyra dropped beside him.

"No. No, no, no…"

She pressed both hands against the wound.

Her Vector Shift flared uselessly against the damage.

"Stay with us."

Garrin's eyes struggled to focus.

He looked at her hands.

Then at Orin.

A faint breath escaped him.

"...did it work?"

Lyra froze.

"What?"

"The…"

He swallowed.

"The thing…"

His eyes shifted toward the Ravager.

"It worked?"

Lyra looked at the creature.

Its shoulder was still ruptured.

Its movements were unstable.

She nodded rapidly.

"Yes."

Her voice broke.

"Yes, Garrin. It worked."

Garrin breathed out.

A tiny smile returned.

"Good."

His head sagged.

"Garrin?"

Lyra grabbed his face.

"Garrin."

Nothing.

"Garrin!"

Orin stared at him.

His hands were covered in blood.

He looked down at them as though they belonged to someone else.

"No."

The Ravager moved.

Lyra didn't notice.

Orin didn't notice.

Neither of them looked up.

They were still looking at Garrin.

Shad did.

The creature's damaged shoulder was already rebuilding.

Its attention had shifted.

Toward Lyra.

Shad's expression hardened.

"Move."

Neither heard him.

Lyra bent over Garrin.

"We're taking him with us."

Orin stood.

His face had changed.

"We're killing it."

Shad looked at him.

"No."

Orin turned.

"What did you say?"

"You're not killing it."

"We can't leave him!"

"You're already dead if you stay."

Orin stepped forward.

Lyra stood with him.

Neither was thinking anymore.

They charged.

Shad exhaled.

"Idiots."

He moved.

Not fast enough to reveal what he truly was.

Just fast enough.

The Ravager's ice limb came down toward Lyra.

Shad intercepted it.

Cold spread through the construct.

It shattered.

Lyra stumbled past him.

"What are you doing?"

"Keeping you alive."

She looked toward Garrin.

"He's still there."

"I know."

"Then move!"

Shad caught her wrist.

She fought him.

"You don't understand!"

"I understand perfectly."

His voice remained flat.

"He's dead."

Lyra went still.

Shad looked directly at her.

"If you die here, he doesn't come back."

Her eyes filled.

"Let go."

"Then stop trying to die with him."

Behind them, the Ravager roared.

The chamber shook.

Shad released her.

"Grieve later."

He looked toward the creature.

"Survive now."

For the first time since Garrin fell, Lyra stopped moving.

And that hesitation saved her life.
