Chapter 82 - Chapter 80 – Difficulties!

Brewing magical potions is never easy.

The potions sold on the market are the most basic types—and even those are incredibly valuable.

There are all sorts of shops in the wizarding world, selling everything imaginable.

And yet, for something as highly demanded as magical potions, there are no dedicated potion shops.

Everyone knows the potion industry is insanely profitable. But potions are something that can't be mass-produced.

The most basic requirement for brewing potions is money. After all, without ingredients, how are you supposed to brew anything?

Basic potions are manageable—those ingredients can usually be found in any ordinary apothecary.

But once you go a level higher, the cost and difficulty of acquiring the ingredients rise drastically.

Some rare ingredients—even if you know what they are—simply can't be found anywhere.

Things like:

Powdered eye of a thousand-year-old dragon,

Blood of a phoenix,

Oil extracted from certain deep-sea fish…

And aside from the rarity of materials, time is another major constraint in potion-making.

For simple brews like cold or fever relief, sure, a few hours will do.

But more advanced potions—like those found in the Restricted Section—take months to prepare.

And some legendary potions can take years of simmering.

Of course, their effects are astounding.

Take Felix Felicis, for example. It temporarily grants the drinker incredible luck.

If someone were to drink it before attempting a heist on Gringotts, the odds of success might go from one in ten thousand to one in a thousand.

A potion that powerful almost shouldn't exist in the world.

Naturally, brewing something like that is almost impossibly difficult.

The process must be watched constantly. The longer a potion brews, the more chances there are for something to go wrong.

A single mistake, and years of effort go down the drain.

That's why master potion makers are usually long-lived species—like elves or dwarves.

Very few are human.

Even if you have all the ingredients and the time, one key issue remains:

The potion brewer.

Because in the end, talent is everything.

Without a skilled potion-maker, none of the rest matters.

Anyone who can craft high-level potions is considered a master, a figure of immense respect.

One master brewer can elevate an entire wizarding family.

To them, fame, wealth, and prestige are within easy reach.

But becoming—or training—such a master is ridiculously difficult.

Just the financial cost alone is enough to deter most smaller families. And before any return on investment, there's only constant expense.

Plus, not everyone is suited for potion-making. It takes talent. No amount of money can make an idiot into a master.

On the subject of potions, Professor Snape had said something at the beginning of the term that still stuck with Harry:

"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making.

As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic.

I do not expect you will truly understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes,

the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind and ensnaring the senses…

I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even stopper death—if you are not as much a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."

Potions class at Hogwarts only covered the basics.

Harry and his classmates didn't brew a full potion every class—that would've been impossible.

Instead, they learned step by step: purification, boiling, essence extraction…

Each herb's properties and handling methods were taught separately, laying the foundation for more advanced coursework later on.

Today, Harry started with a simple potion: Gold-Eater Elixir.

This unusual potion has one very specific property—it dissolves gold.

It's useless against other metals, which makes it perfect for refining gold and minting Galleons.

It's ideal for beginners. As long as you follow the instructions, it's nearly foolproof.

Its ingredients are only four:

Crocodile saliva,

Rotten egg fluid,

Dried horn,

Feathered snake scales.

Temperature, flame intensity, stirring speed, direction—

All of it must be monitored constantly. No room for carelessness.

Harry and Cho followed the book's instructions to the letter. Whenever the potion in the cauldron matched a described condition, they advanced to the next step.

Gradually, the murky mixture became clearer, shifting into a transparent purple.

But it wasn't done yet.

Then, at a certain moment, the bubbling liquid suddenly stilled—and a puff of smoke rose from the cauldron.

"Extinguish it!"

The flames went out instantly.

Only a small amount of the potion remained.

Harry poured it into a thick, square glass bottle.

Success.

He pulled out a shiny Galleon and carefully dripped a bit of the potion onto it.

Sure enough, the surface of the coin began to corrode, forming patterns like deep-sea coral. A small puddle of pure gold collected underneath.

The leftover waste? One Scouring Charm took care of it.

Harry stretched. His body wasn't tired, but mentally, it had been a long process.

And only then did he remember—he still had a mountain of presents waiting to be opened.

"Cho."

"…"

"This is for you." Harry held out a small gift box.

Poor Harry—after all the fuss, he still had to give it to her by hand.

But Cho… how could she possibly take it after everything that happened this morning?

Harry cursed himself for being an idiot. He set the gift box on the table and walked away.

Cho opened it.

Inside, a delicate bracelet shimmered gently in the light.

She picked it up. It felt cool and smooth in her hands.

She slipped it onto her wrist, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
