Hagrid noticed it too. Eyes wide, he murmured, "Norbert seems to think you're his parent."

His tone was complicated.

Harry hadn't expected this at all. Hagrid had always dreamed of having a dragon of his own. Now, after finally getting one, the dragon had bonded with Harry instead.

Harry gently patted Norbert on the back, like he would any adorable pet. Sure enough, Norbert didn't resist at all.

Seeing this, Hagrid looked even more upset.

Harry never would have thought that, after giving up on the idea of the dragon recognizing him as its master, Merlin would pull a trick like this.

Could it really be that the first person the dragon saw after hatching was him? If so... that was amazing!

Harry quickly comforted Hagrid. "Hagrid, don't be upset. I won't be able to take care of him all the time anyway. That'll still be your job. You might not be his mum, but hey—being a stepmum's not bad, right?"

Hagrid's eyes lit up. "Yeah… you're right!"

His spirits lifted immediately.

Harry let out a sigh of relief. Great—he'd secured a free dragon caretaker.

Hagrid brought out the food he had prepared and fed Norbert. After eating, the little dragon curled up to sleep.

Harry took his leave.

On the way back to the dormitory, Harry suddenly remembered something.

He should've named the dragon.

He wasn't really a fan of the name "Norbert" that Hagrid had given him.

Thinking back on the names he'd given his other pets—his post owl was Optimus Prime, nickname "Blackie"; his cat was Cutie; and his unicorn was Snowy—Harry got an idea.

He decided to call the dragon Big Black. Strong and bold. Perfect.

And so, the Norwegian Ridgeback's new name was officially set.

The next morning, Harry woke up. Only three days remained before the Quidditch match.

That night, he snuck out again to visit Hagrid's hut.

As soon as he opened the door, Hagrid shot him a big, exaggerated wink.

Inside the hut stood two other people—Professor McGonagall, her face as stern as ever, and Professor Sprout, the Herbology teacher.

As soon as McGonagall saw that it was Harry who had entered, her face darkened even more. She said sharply, "Don't you know students aren't allowed to leave school grounds after hours?"

She practically shouted, "One hundred points from Gryffindor!"

No way. Harry almost wanted to dig in his ears—was he hearing that right?

That was a ridiculous deduction.

It was just sneaking off school grounds!

Then she turned to Hagrid. "You dare raise a dragon on school property? Do you not know how illegal this is under wizarding law? If the Ministry finds out, who knows what the Daily Prophet will print!"

Okay, Harry understood why she was so furious now.

Hagrid lowered his head and stood silently off to the side.

The moment Big Black saw Harry, it happily trotted over and rubbed up against his legs.

Even though it had only been a day, the dragon already looked noticeably bigger.

McGonagall's eyes widened at the sight.

Given Hagrid's track record, she had naturally assumed the dragon belonged to him. But now, seeing this…

McGonagall asked in a low voice, "Harry, is this dragon yours?"

Harry thought for a moment and replied hesitantly, "I guess so?"

It was like someone had lit a match—McGonagall exploded. "Another one hundred points from Gryffindor!"

She took a deep breath and fixed her glare on both Harry and Hagrid. "I believe it's time we bring this matter to the Headmaster."

Originally, McGonagall had assumed it was just another one of Hagrid's foolish impulses. She'd been angry, yes, but she understood Hagrid. She had simply planned to have the dragon sent away.

But now that the dragon apparently belonged to a first-year student—this had become a much bigger issue.

It was something only Dumbledore could handle.

The group immediately headed toward the castle.

Hagrid whispered to Harry, "They wanted me to take them into the Forbidden Forest to look for something, but then Professor McGonagall saw Norbert…"

They made their way to the second floor of the castle, where a massive stone gargoyle stood.

Professor McGonagall said, "Iced lemon squash."

The gargoyle suddenly sprang to life, leaping aside. The wall behind it split open, revealing a spiral staircase. They stepped on, and the wall closed behind them.

They climbed until they reached a gleaming wooden door with a brass knocker shaped like a griffin.

Professor McGonagall knocked, and the door opened on its own.

Dumbledore's office was fascinating—a spacious, circular room filled with curious noises.

Strange silver instruments sat spinning and emitting wisps of smoke on claw-footed tables.

Portraits of previous headmasters and headmistresses lined the walls—men and women, all looking noble and wise. Behind a large, claw-footed desk was a shelf holding the ragged old Sorting Hat.

At that moment, Dumbledore was seated behind the desk, quill in hand, looking up at them in puzzlement.

A strange thought crossed Harry's mind: He's pouring his heart into rewriting the syllabus…

Professor McGonagall briefly summarized the situation.

Dumbledore turned to Hagrid. "Hagrid, where did you get the dragon egg?"

Faced with Dumbledore, Hagrid looked nervous. "I… I won it in a bet at a pub."

Professor McGonagall turned and glared at him, as if he'd committed an unforgivable sin.

Dumbledore nodded, not pressing further. Wise as he was, even he couldn't immediately suspect that this was all connected to Voldemort's attempt to steal the Philosopher's Stone.
