The scenery changed at the place the token was placed as an opening appeared. The soldier walked inside and the gap closed again, the appearance going back to that of a complete ruin.

To test what they had just seen, one of the soldiers walked to the barrier and placed the token he had just been given on it.

The barrier was a short distance from the gate and the walls of the community. So, once someone got inside the protective barrier, they would appear outside the gate.
They would have to open the gate before walking in. However, with the barrier intact, it didn't matter even if the gate remained open all the time.
