Chapter 10 - Rory

The Glitched Phantom

Basic Information

Role: Developer Turned NPC (Memory-Wiped)

Personality: Casual, easygoing, oddly carefree despite his condition

Motivations: To enjoy the world, to interact, to belong—whether as a real person or not

Character Overview

Rory is an anomaly.

Once a developer, he is now something… different.

He was infected by the virus embedded in the code—an event that should have erased him completely.

But Blesh intervened, stabilized him, and saved his existence… at a cost.

His memories were wiped—he no longer remembers who he truly is.

He believes he is an NPC, a character placed in this world without purpose other than to exist, entertain, and interact.

His casual nature is not just a personality trait—it is a survival mechanism. If he questions too much, he risks destabilizing again.

He is infected, yet stable—an impossible contradiction, which is why Kane chose to isolate him.

He now wanders the world freely, drifting from place to place, not fully aware of the true nature of his past.

But his glitches—and his memory losses—are proof that something is still wrong.

And the deeper he gets involved with others, the more dangerous his existence becomes.

Personality & Behavior

The Lost Soul Who Pretends Not to Be

Rory is casual, friendly, and oddly detached from everything.

Treats Everyone the Same – To him, there is no difference between NPCs, players, or even developers—because in his mind, he is just an NPC, too.

Doesn't Take Anything Too Seriously – He reacts to chaos, danger, and even tragedy with a casual shrug, as if everything is just a game to him.

Hides His Anxiety Behind Humor – Deep down, something feels off, but rather than confronting it, he laughs it off.

Forgets Important Things… Sometimes Too Easily – If something traumatic happens, his mind often wipes it away, as if his code is trying to protect him from breaking down.

Memory Loss & Glitches

Rory's greatest curse is his unstable memory.

His clothes glitch randomly, displaying error messages, missing textures, or distortion effects.

When this happens, his memories reset—sometimes only a few minutes, other times months of his life.

If a small glitch occurs, he forgets what he was just doing, who he was talking to, or what happened that day.

If a major glitch occurs, he forgets weeks, months, or even his entire identity.

The worst possibility? He could forget everything… permanently.

This is why he chooses to live in the moment.

Because every moment might be his last.

Appearance & Style

Rory's appearance is simple and monochrome, but subtly unstable.

Black and White Jacket, Shirt, Pants, and Shoes – His style is clean, neutral, and almost intentionally generic, fitting his belief that he is just another NPC.

Glitching Clothes – At random moments, his clothing distorts, showing:

Error Messages that flicker and vanish.

Glitch Effects that scramble his textures for a few seconds.

"Missing Textures" Effect – His clothing turns into blank, untextured models, revealing the fragility of his existence.

When He Glitches, His Mind Does Too – Every visual error is a warning that he is about to lose part of himself.

Despite this, he carries himself casually, as if none of it matters.

But every glitch is another piece of him slipping away.

Role in the Digital World

The Developer Who Doesn't Know He's a Developer

Rory is isolated from the others—not out of cruelty, but out of precaution.

Kane keeps him away from the hotel and the city, fearing his presence could further corrupt the world.

He roams freely, appearing in different places, interacting with testers and NPCs alike.

He does not have a mission, nor a clear purpose—he simply exists.

Yet, despite his detachment, he influences things more than he realizes.

A Walking Paradox

Rory is both infected and stable, a glitched entity that should not exist, yet does.

He is proof that the virus is evolving in ways even the developers do not fully understand.

His casual nature keeps him grounded, but if he ever fully regains his memories, the consequences could be catastrophic.

The biggest question: Is his existence a mistake? Or is he the key to something bigger?

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:

✔ Completely Unpredictable – Even Kane cannot fully control or predict him, making him an anomaly in the system.

✔ Accepted by NPCs & Players Alike – Since he believes he is an NPC, NPCs see him as one of their own, and testers find him approachable.

✔ Detached from Fear – He is never afraid, because he doesn't truly understand his own danger.

✔ May Hold Unlocked Knowledge – His past memories may contain critical information, if he ever remembers them.

Weaknesses:

✖ Memory Loss is Uncontrollable – He can lose everything at any moment, making him unreliable even to himself.

✖ Isolated by Kane – He is kept away from the core of the world, preventing him from fully understanding what's happening.

✖ Lack of Direction – Since he believes he has no purpose, he does not seek to change anything—he only reacts.

✖ His Glitches May Be Getting Worse – If his corruption increases, he may eventually be erased from existence altogether.
