Lying on a deck chair and enjoying the sea breeze, Silas watched as a few Wingull and Pelipper occasionally soared through the night sky.
They were the Pokémon of the sailors on board, responsible for long-range surveillance.
In the waters surrounding the ship, several Tentacruel and Mantine lurked, serving as additional security.
After all, those who boarded S.S. Anne were either wealthy or powerful. If anything were to happen, the ship's reputation would be utterly ruined.
Rumor had it that the ship's owner spent a fortune every year to hire a Water-type Elite Four along with several high-ranking trainers to safeguard the vessel.
Whether that was true or not remained uncertain no one had ever seen an Elite Four take action. But a few trainers at the Ace Trainer level had indeed been spotted.
Yawning, Silas started feeling a bit drowsy.
Glancing at the time, he realized that barely any time had passed. He called over a server and requested a fishing rod.
After making his way to the designated fishing area, he cast his line into the sea.
Not having his Pokémon with him wasn't an issue. If he caught a Pokémon, he could either attempt to capture it himself or let the nearby trainers release it back into the ocean.
After all, reeling in a powerful Pokémon alone was unrealistic. Most of the Pokémon caught were Magikarp, Krabby, and Goldeen.
If someone actually managed to pull a 6.5-meter, 235-kilogram Gyarados onto the deck, Silas could only say one thing respect.
Forget about Gyarados he doubted he could even reel in a Seaking. With an average weight of nearly 40 kilograms, combined with the Pokémon's natural strength, he couldn't exactly punch it out like a Fighting-type Pokémon.
This was precisely why the ocean remained a vast, unexplored mystery.
No one truly knew how many Pokémon lurked in its depths.
Without overthinking, Silas casually tossed his fishing line into the sea.
The bobber swayed with the gentle waves as he yawned, waiting for something to bite.
One minute...
Five minutes...
Ten minutes...
Twenty minutes...
Time passed, but his fishing rod remained completely still.
An elderly man fishing nearby, noticing that Silas had yet to catch anything, struck up a conversation.
"Young man, aren't you getting impatient?"
"Not really. I'm not here to catch Pokémon just enjoying the experience of fishing."
Silas took a sip of his drink, holding the rod in one hand.
The old man let out a hearty laugh. "Not many young folks have your patience these days."
He popped a candy into his mouth before continuing, "Are you here on vacation?"
Silas, having nothing better to do, responded, "Yeah, just relaxing. What about you?"
The old man chuckled. "My kids got me this ticket, said I should travel and unwind a little. I think they're just too busy and wanted to get me out of the way.
Luckily, my granddaughter also boarded the ship to keep me company otherwise, I'd be bored out of my mind."
Though the old man appeared stern and serious, his words carried a warm and playful tone.
Silas glanced at his attire a brightly colored tropical shirt and shorts and joked, "You seem to be enjoying yourself quite a bit, though."
A burly man nearby overheard their conversation and joined in with a laugh. "Hah! This old man's got quite the lifestyle. I saw him chatting up an elderly lady just yesterday!"
Another man chuckled. "Didn't expect you to be so energetic, old man."
Laughter erupted among the fishing group.
"His real fear is that his wife back home will find out and scold him!" another man joked.
The elderly man waved them off. "Bah! You guys talk too much nonsense."
Most of the people fishing were older men. Young people and women rarely had the patience for such a slow-paced activity.
Their conversations were usually reserved and measured, since they were all strangers and wanted to maintain their image.
However, since Silas had already started cracking jokes, the atmosphere quickly loosened up.
Once they found out he was not even seventeen yet, they became even more relaxed.
Most of them had children around his age, or even older, so they began teasing him playfully.
Silas sighed middle-aged men could be even more gossipy than women.
Meanwhile, from time to time, someone would reel in a Pokémon and show off, prompting laughter and mock complaints from the group.
During the next two hours, Silas finally had some success he caught two Magikarp.
However, they were both low-potential specimens, so he casually tossed them back into the sea.
After all, Magikarp was widely known as the weakest Pokémon it had almost no strength or speed.
Aside from its insane resilience and overwhelming population, it had zero redeeming qualities.
The odds of finding a Magikarp capable of evolving into a Gyarados were slim to none you could fish in an entire river and still not find a single one.
Naturally, the others laughed and teased him for his poor luck.
But Silas didn't mind anyone who fished long enough had been "blessed" with an entire day of catching nothing but Magikarp at some point.
Just then—
"Ding-dong~"
His wristwatch beeped it was a notification that his three Pokémon had finished their treatment.
Bidding farewell to the group, he assured them that he would return throughout the week before leaving.
Even after he left, the group continued chatting and laughing.
At some point, one of them asked, "That kid's a good one. Anyone know who he is?"
"I think he's here for the Kanto Gym Leader gathering. He represents Pewter Gym."
"Old Fu, you know Flint, right? Ask him."
The man called Old Fu casually replied, "Flint mentioned him before. Apparently, he's an up-and-coming trainer with great potential."
"Oh? Thinking about finding a son-in-law?" one of them teased.
"Pfft! If anyone wants to marry my daughter, they better beat me in a battle first!"
Laughter erupted once again.
The conversation soon shifted to other topics, as the old men continued their late-night fishing session.
Meanwhile, the elderly man who had first spoken with Silas stood up, shaking his head with a chuckle.
"Well, gentlemen, I'll be heading back. My granddaughter is coming to find me."
"Alright, take care! It's getting late don't catch a cold in the night breeze."
The group bid him farewell as he leisurely made his way toward the cabin.
A young woman with long, golden hair cascading down her back hurried toward him, gently taking his arm.
"Grandpa, you seem to be in a great mood today."
The old man smiled. "Met a promising young man. If you spent more time on the ship with me, I'd be even happier."
She pouted. "Grandpa, you were the one who said Professor Oak needed my help! I'll come back to keep you company once I'm done with my work."
Then, with a playful smirk, she added, "Besides, with Grandma not here, aren't you enjoying the freedom?"
