"Tsk… sure enough, art is just like a starfish," Silas muttered to himself with a sigh, brushing a bit of dust off his clothes.
As the smoke and dust from the rock explosion cleared, a deep, dark cave entrance appeared before everyone's eyes.
"Rrraaa!"
Just as Professor Oak and Silas, leading the group, were about to instruct their Pokémon to go down and investigate, a sharp, ear-piercing roar echoed from deep underground.
"Dragonite, Dragon Rush!"
Unsurprisingly, Professor Oak reacted the fastest. The very next moment, the command was already out of his mouth.
Years of companionship and battle had given Dragonite and Professor Oak near-perfect synchronicity—almost as if they could read each other's minds. To onlookers, it even seemed like Dragonite had begun ascending into the air to prepare for Dragon Rush before Oak had given the command.
"Roooaaaar!"
From hundreds of meters above, Dragonite's massive yellow body dove sharply. The combined might of a Dragon-type Pokémon and Dragonite's own overwhelming strength created a pressure so intense it almost felt suffocating.
Even visually, the air seemed to warp wherever it passed, while layers of shockwaves rippled along the ground.
Gigalith stood at the front, the earthy-yellow patterns on its body rippling as it shielded everyone's vision from the swirling dust.
"Rrraaa!"
From the underground cavern burst an unfamiliar Pokémon—a gray-bodied, purple-winged creature. It hadn't even had time to register what was happening or see the intruder to its territory before Dragonite smashed into it at the very instant it emerged.
The two Pokémon crashed downward, plummeting back into the underground.
Boom!
Another deafening crash rang out.
It was obvious that Dragonite had slammed the Aerodactyl into the cavern floor deep below.
Silas could feel the ground trembling beneath his feet.
The underground cavern isn't going to collapse, is it? he thought nervously.
"Let's go take a look," Professor Oak said casually, showing no hint of concern.
"Uh… Professor Oak, the cavern might be at risk of collapsing after what Dragonite just—" Officer Jenny finally spoke up.
"Hahaha, don't worry, it's fine! Dragonite held back. It knows what it's doing." Professor Oak laughed heartily, and before anyone could say more, he leapt straight into the hole.
"Hey! Be careful!"
Everyone cried out in surprise at his recklessness.
Silas couldn't help baring his teeth in disbelief. Wow… Professor Oak really just jumped in without a single safety measure?
It seemed the Aerodactyl had him far too excited.
And it was no wonder—this was like a dinosaur thought long extinct suddenly appearing in the modern day. For a scientist, not going mad with excitement already showed remarkable self-control.
"Everyone, follow me down!" Silas wasted no time. He recalled Gigalith, released his Blaziken, and jumped in right after.
If this had been before his physical training, he might have been nervous. But now, with a good understanding of his body's capabilities and complete trust in Blaziken's strength, he felt confident tackling a slope like this—it wasn't a straight vertical drop, after all.
Officer Jenny exchanged wordless glances with the nearby security personnel before sighing.
"First squad, go down. Second squad, stay up here and hold position. Third and fourth squads, with me. Tighten the perimeter. Also, contact the League and request reinforcements—the more, the better!"
Her calm, methodical orders carried authority.
She wasn't worried about Professor Oak or Silas down below—what concerned her was the possibility of word getting out to criminal organizations or poachers. That would be real trouble.
Even from a brief glance, she had recognized that Pokémon—it was the supposedly extinct Aerodactyl of legend.
Up above, the surface was abuzz with activity.
Meanwhile, Silas slid down the sloped tunnel, using his shoes to slow his descent. Soon he reached the underground cavern.
Blaziken landed lightly beside him.
Silas shifted his feet a bit—hot. Luckily, his shoes were sturdy enough to handle it.
The cavern was nothing like he'd imagined—it wasn't dark at all. The whole place was illuminated by the bright white glow of Professor Oak's Dragonite, who was using Flash.
Dragonite glanced at Silas and Blaziken and greeted them with a goofy smile.
But anyone who actually thought Dragonite was a simple-minded goof would be the real fool.
Why? Just look at the ring of unconscious ancient Pokémon lying around it—plus one unfortunate Aerodactyl.
Professor Oak was already crouched over them, magnifying glass in hand, carefully inspecting Pokémon believed to have gone extinct long ago.
Sometimes he lifted the long bony scythes of a Kabutops, sometimes he picked up an Omanyte for a closer look.
Silas swallowed hard. Barely over a minute had passed since they'd come down here, and yet the "boss" of the cavern had already been completely wiped out.
"Silas! You're practically a walking Jirachi!"
Hearing movement behind him, Professor Oak spun around, rushed over, and grabbed Silas's shoulders with both hands, shaking him excitedly with a wild look in his eyes.
"P-Professor Oak… you… calm down…" Silas stammered, his words jolted apart by the shaking.
Fortunately, Oak didn't linger—he turned back immediately, diving once more into frenzied study of the ancient Pokémon.
Thump, thump, thump!
One by one, security officers descended on ropes into the cavern. Seeing the sight before them, they were all visibly stunned.
As members of the League's internal squads, they weren't uneducated—they recognized the supposedly "extinct" ancient Pokémon instantly.
Even with rigorous training, they couldn't help but gape… though their expressions also held a trace of joy. These Pokémon wouldn't be theirs, of course, but being among the first security officers on the scene practically guaranteed promotions and raises.
The squad leader was the first to recover. He ordered the officers to split into pairs and fan out to explore the entire cavern.
They had done similar work before with historical ruins, though this situation was far more unusual.
"Remember—the top priority is to keep the ecosystem here stable. Do not cause damage. Everything must be done conservatively."
The leader's words were firm—if something went wrong here, the consequences would be far beyond what he could bear.
Silas glanced at him with some surprise. Not bad—most people wouldn't even think about the ecosystem.
These ancient Pokémon had lived in this deep underground cavern for so long without being discovered, which meant they had formed a special sealed ecosystem.
Studying it in depth could yield a wealth of information.
The group quickly got to work.
Professor Oak eventually finished his initial examination. Detailed data couldn't be gathered by eye alone, not even by him—it would require further analysis later.
Meanwhile, the number of ancient Pokémon near Dragonite kept increasing. They were being captured by League squad members during their searches—restrained in special nets made from silk produced by trained Bug-type Pokémon.
A few hours later—
"How's it looking, Professor Oak?" The one asking this was Bruno.
At this moment, the people surrounding Professor Oak were no longer the Alliance's field squad. Instead, several Gym Leaders from the Kanto region who were currently free had gathered, along with a bare-chested, immensely muscular man—none other than Bruno, the Fighting-type member of the Kanto Elite Four.
"They really are ancient Pokémon… simply unbelievable, truly unbelievable," Professor Oak exclaimed repeatedly, still marveling.
"Moreover, according to the data, perhaps because they've spent such a long time in this underground cavern, all of these Pokémon now possess the Rock type. They've become a very rare Rock + Water type combination," Silas said, holding a device in his hands as he added to Oak's statement.
"It's most likely an acquired change brought on by the local ecological environment," said a woman with dark crimson, shoulder-length hair in a calm tone. "Judging by their vital signs and energy fluctuation patterns, they must have been in a dormant state until recently.
"During their long slumber underground, the energy of the Rock type subtly altered their original typings. This sort of thing is rare—so far, the Pokémon League has only discovered similar cases in the Alola region.
"Even in the Orange Islands, most differences are in behavior and body shape, but changes in typing have never been recorded."
This was Professor Ivy, a researcher from Valencia Island in the Orange Archipelago of the Kanto League, specializing in studying regional form variations of Pokémon.
As for the Alola region she mentioned—it happened to be the place where Snivy's, had once lived.
Given that everyone present was a core League insider, there was nothing in her words that needed to be kept secret.
"The League agrees with Professor Oak's view: we should turn this place into a Pokémon sanctuary.
"After all, we still don't know exactly why this environment suits these ancient Pokémon. If we rashly take them away, it may not be suitable for their survival.
"Besides, these ancient Pokémon are naturally aggressive. Their predatory instincts from ancient times have not been erased—they're far too dangerous."
Bruno's voice was deep and magnetic, completely unlike his rugged exterior.
If he hadn't casually knocked out a Kabutops with a single blow just moments earlier, Silas might have thought his muscles were for show.
"Yes, this is indeed the most reasonable approach. Has the League squad finished their exploration?" Professor Oak nodded and looked toward the squad captain.
"Report: mission complete. The map and related findings have been uploaded to the database for all of you.
"All the ancient Pokémon have been captured using specialized Bug-type silk nets—no Poké Balls were used.
"In addition, three Pokémon Eggs were discovered, belonging to Geodude, Sandshrew, and Togepi, respectively."
The squad captain delivered his report firmly and clearly.
"The underground river and the complete ecosystem remain intact? Professor Ivy, what's your opinion…" Oak began, while the others, upon hearing the captain's report, opened their wrist devices to review the files and started discussing among themselves.
Flint, however, walked over to Silas with a grin. "Kid, you've got incredible luck. I heard you even went into the Mysterious Garden—makes me jealous of your fortune."
He'd already been briefed on the whole incident. As a member of the Pewter Gym, Silas's contribution brought him—and by extension, Flint as the Gym Leader—considerable prestige.
"Heh-heh-heh." Silas just grinned sheepishly, saying nothing.
