Chapter 185 - Chapter 185: The Next City

"Sure, since you already have a Breeder's license now." Yuki didn't mind at all. "But, which ones are you planning to trade for?"

"The upgraded set recipes will be fine." Silas wasn't asking for much.

The so-called "sets" were similar to the nutritional items sold in department stores that enhanced the six different stats of Pokémon. The difference was, these were recipes for making Pokéblocks of the six different flavors.

As for the "upgraded" version, it simply referred to tips and experiences gathered through trial and error—for example, the optimal speed and rhythm when blending different types of Berries. These insights would help him quickly master the production of these Pokéblocks.

It was essentially like getting a top student's notebook.

After all, these six Pokéblocks were already the most basic forms; there was no way to improve them further unless you replaced all the ingredients with extremely rare Berries. Otherwise, the difference between normal ones and special ones wasn't that great.

Silas didn't want to spend extra time perfecting every little detail right now—at least not at this stage.

"Alright, I'll send you a digital Breeder exchange contract later. You just need to sign it."

Yuki was casual about it. Honestly, using this kind of knowledge in exchange for Silas's simplified recipe still felt like she had gained the better deal.

"You're planning to raise a Fire-type Pokémon as your starter, aren't you?"

Silas sat down on a bench nearby, leaned against the backrest, and asked, "Aren't you worried about what your teacher will say?"

Yuki's teacher was based in Celadon City—a firm supporter of Grass-type Pokémon who didn't like other types, especially Fire-types.

It was said this was because her old rival had been a die-hard Fire-type trainer.

And since her Grass-types had always been restrained by Fire, she could never beat that rival in battle. Though she was much stronger in breeding expertise, she still carried that frustration.

"It's fine. My teacher is actually quite open-minded, not as extreme as the rumors make her out to be." Yuki clearly knew about the gossip.

Of course, it wasn't entirely baseless. Otherwise, she wouldn't have been so awkward when it came to Fire-type Pokéblocks and breeding techniques.

"Whatever works. If you need help, you can come to me." Silas said casually—it was more politeness than sincerity.

Even if the rumors were true, and that Grass-type Breeding Master wasn't fond of Fire-types, it wasn't his place to intervene in her student's choice of starter Pokémon.

"Okay." Yuki replied simply, showing no sign whether she actually took it to heart.

"By the way, how many badges have you collected so far?"

"Six. Out of the Eight Gyms, I haven't challenged Viridian or Saffron yet. I'm planning to beat two more official Gyms, then start preparing for the Pokémon League Conference."

Silas answered.

"Huh? You're not going to train back in Viridian City?" Yuki asked in confusion.

"Of course I am." Silas replied with equal confusion, unsure why she asked.

"Then why don't you challenge the Viridian Gym? You've gone to the other six already. The only one you lost was against Sabrina in Saffron."

Silas froze for a moment.

She had a point. Anyone could see that his Gym challenge path was aimed straight at the traditional Eight Gyms, which was also most trainers' choice.

Giving up after losing once to Sabrina was understandable. But skipping his own hometown's Viridian Gym entirely? That was a little odd.

"Maybe it's just that I've gotten used to seeing the Gym closed whenever I pass by, so I subconsciously assumed it was always shut."

Silas quickly came up with a reasonable excuse.

And it was true—despite Giovanni's reputation as Viridian Gym Leader and his supposed dedication to protecting the city, the Gym was often closed.

The word was that Giovanni spent much of his time exploring the depths of Viridian Forest to train his Pokémon.

This had earned him admiration from adventurous Trainers, many of whom tried to imitate his style.

But Silas only wanted to say—of course Giovanni could do that, he had the Power of Viridian. In the forest, he was like its chosen child. As long as he didn't go around smashing Pokémon Eggs, no Pokémon would dare trouble him.

Even the notoriously aggressive Beedrill swarms left him alone.

And Giovanni's strength? Far beyond what most could imagine. Publicly, he was already recognized as "Giovanni of the Earth," possessing the strength of an Elite Four–level Trainer.

Who knew what else he was hiding?

For example—his ace was actually a Beedrill. Probably only Silas and Giovanni himself knew that.

To most people, Beedrill? Wasn't that just a Pokémon that won fights by sheer numbers? Who would believe a Beedrill could go toe-to-toe with Champions or even Legendary Pokémon?

"Ah, you're right." Yuki nodded. Giovanni closing the Gym was as famous as Blaine on Cinnabar Island being hard to track down.

"Exactly. So on the way back, I'll just challenge two more Gyms. Then, when I have free time during training, I'll stop by the Viridian Gym and see if it's open.

Otherwise, if I don't collect all eight badges, I'll have to scramble at the last minute."

Silas's explanation sounded flawless.

Out of his sight, Yuki nodded in rhythm, then realized he couldn't see her.

"Yeah, makes sense," she agreed.

"Anyway, it's getting late. I'd better head out. In this wilderness, there aren't many places to rest." Silas joked as he said goodbye.

Yuki, knowing the Exam Center was indeed in a remote place, didn't hesitate—after a few more words, she hung up.

"Alright, I'll leave it to you, Pidgeot."

On an open patch of ground, Silas threw out a Luxury Ball.

"Pidgeoooot~!"

Pidgeot spread its magnificent wings and let out a proud cry.

"Let's head out. Don't fly off course."

Silas warned as he climbed onto Pidgeot's back.

"Pid-gee~"

Pidgeot replied, as if saying, Trust me, I've got this. Then it soared into the sky.

After so many flights, Silas had grown used to traveling at high altitude. He quickly steadied his mood and looked down at the ground below.

A vast stretch of green filled his eyes.

It was soothing—refreshing for the soul, he thought.

Still, there sure were a lot of League training facilities around here. Looking down at the clusters of white buildings, he couldn't help but think: So the anime showing only the examination center wasn't quite accurate after all.

Come to think of it, was that certification center built later? I don't remember hearing anyone mention it. Carrying that thought, Pidgeot flew further and further away.

Meanwhile, in one of those white buildings he had just flown over—

"Report, Captain Kazuo. A trainer just passed overhead. No suspicious movements were detected. Based on flight trajectory, he should have just completed the Breeder's Exam. From body shape, clothing, and Pokémon, he's most likely Silas Alaric from Viridian City."

A young man dressed in a black tight-fitting uniform, black pants, and gray boots reported to his superior.

"Hm. No need to worry about him. Cancel the alert. Once this period passes, hardly anyone will be around. Seriously… it's the same every year, such a nuisance."

The one addressed as Captain Kazuo was clearly impatient, yet still gave instructions.

"Number Two, go tell Instructor Viper that the outdoor training grounds won't be available for a while. Those physical drills, obstacle runs, and cross-country training for the latest batch of cadets will have to be postponed. Let him arrange alternative drills himself."

"Yes, sir!"

The man at the monitoring station jumped up and sprinted out.

"Don't slack off. Keep watching the area. Once this is over, you'll all get your bonus," Kazuo said lazily, trying to motivate his men.

Everyone nodded in unison.

The most striking feature about their uniforms was the large, bold, red "R" emblazoned on their chests.

This was the Rocket Academy—Team Rocket's training base for reserve members.

Of course, on the surface, it was nothing more than a normal training facility. Its official name was Rocket Group Security Company Personnel Training Base. On paper, all its documentation and qualifications were fully compliant with League regulations.

"Report!"

Number Two, who had just left the monitoring room, ran into a classroom.

Inside, a burly man with a spiky mohawk of bluish-purple hair was barking orders at a group of recruits. When he heard the voice at the door, his sharp eyes turned toward it.

This was the so-called Instructor Viper.

Number Two nervously shuffled up to him, whispering in his ear.

"Tch, fine, I get it. You're still as timid as ever. Didn't that bastard Kazuo teach you how to speak up properly?"

Instructor Viper clearly wasn't pleased with him, but he didn't dwell on it. With a wave of his hand, he dismissed him.

"Alright, next I'm splitting you into two squads: Red and Blue. You'll pair up in teams of two. During training and sparring, the best-performing pairs will earn extra rewards. When I call your name, step forward!"

Not waiting for the rookies to properly line up, Instructor Viper began reading names.

"First up—Jessie, Red Team. Partner, Akai!"

Out strode a red-haired delinquent woman, gum in her mouth, carelessly swinging an iron chain.

"So, who's this beauty's partner?" she shouted arrogantly.

A hook-nosed man stepped forward with a sinister grin.

"Ugh. He doesn't look like any good news," Jessie thought, swinging her chain even harder.

Viper rubbed his temples. Jessie again. She'd joined the academy with special instructions from higher up. He could only hope she wouldn't cause too much trouble. Nepotism, even here… he thought bitterly. Still, he didn't say more and continued with the roll call.

"Second—Masao, Blue Team. Partner, Orihime!

Third—Jūbei, Red Team. Partner, Kenji!"

"So boring. Maybe I should drag that idiot James over here to play later," Jessie muttered to herself, standing lazily on the sidelines.

Her current partner, meanwhile, wasn't making any effort to interact—he just crouched in the corner, occasionally letting out disturbing little chuckles.

By this time, Silas had already arrived at his next destination: Crimson City.

The city was named after the nearby Crimson Forest, a vast grove of maple trees forming part of the Viridian Forest that stretched across Kanto.

Every autumn, the area turned into a sea of fiery red leaves, making it a popular tourist destination. Many trainers dreamed of picnicking beneath that scarlet canopy with their Pokémon and families.
