Chapter 275 - Chapter 275: The Top-16 Battle: A Brutal Strategy

Torterra — the final evolved form of the Sinnoh Grass-type starter, known as the Continent Pokémon.

With its huge, flat shell, it resembles an ankylosaur-like turtle.

A large tree resembling an oak grows on its shell alongside three gray, triangular boulders.

The combination of brown, gray, and green tones, together with its massive body, gives off a sense of solid strength and security.

That's one of the reasons why its species is called the Continent Pokémon.

Two pointed spikes protruded symmetrically from Torterra's head, its snapping-turtle-like mouth looking a bit intimidating.

Its thick legs supported the enormous weight of its body.

Weighing over 300 kilograms (660 lbs), the towering creature stood on the field with overwhelming pressure.

Without moving a muscle, a cluster of glowing green orbs appeared in the air and drifted toward Torterra, covering its body.

The green light shimmered as the black burn marks slowly faded, and Torterra's breathing steadied once more.

Not bad at all, Silas praised inwardly.

As a Grass- and Ground-type Pokémon, Torterra was generally peace-loving, preferring to bask in the sun or interact gently with others rather than fight.

Its docile temperament was such that small Pokémon often gathered and even lived symbiotically upon its back.

It was rare to see a Torterra like this one, brimming with such fighting spirit.

"Use Flamethrower again."

Silas showed no fear.

On one hand, he held the type advantage and overall stronger battle power.

On the other, Torterra's greatest strength lay in its physical attacks, while it wasn't very adept at long-range energy moves.

If it wanted to hurt Blaziken, it would have to close the distance first.

But there was no way Silas would ever allow that.

For a Pokémon specialized in speed like Blaziken, being caught by Torterra would mean all their training had been for nothing.

Once again, a massive pillar of flame burst across the field.

At first, without any clear comparison, the audience and commentators simply thought Blaziken's Flamethrower looked a bit larger than usual.

But when they saw it against Torterra — a gigantic Pokémon they finally understood just how powerful Blaziken's attack really was.

Nina's eyes filled with determination.

"Rock Tomb!" she commanded, ordering Torterra to defend first.

A wall of massive rocks rose up across the battlefield.

The fiery blast slammed into the stone barricade, sending waves of hot air rippling outward.

Although Flamethrower was powerful, the Rock-type resistance to Fire-type attacks allowed Torterra to withstand the assault without too much damage.

"Torterra, Earthquake!" Nina quickly tried to regain the initiative.

Torterra lifted its front legs high, then slammed them down hard.

BOOM!

A tremendous sound echoed as the entire field shook violently.

Silas gripped the railing on the trainer's platform for balance.

With its massive weight and Ground typing, Torterra's Earthquake was extremely potent, amplified by every favorable condition.

Blaziken's attack stopped as it struggled to maintain balance under the quaking ground.

Chunks of rock jutted upward, slamming into its body, and it winced.

The damage from Earthquake was considerable.

Fortunately, Torterra's intent seemed to be more about interrupting Blaziken's move than causing heavy damage. Otherwise, that single Earthquake could have drained most of Blaziken's stamina.

Silas did a quick mental count — now should be about the right time.

"Move — Heat Wave!"

Taking advantage of the Earthquake's aftermath, he gave a crisp command.

Blaziken kicked off the ground powerfully, its movements leaving behind multiple afterimages across the arena.

"What incredible Speed Boost ability! After a while in battle, Silas's Blaziken has gained tremendous speed — it's moving faster than our eyes can track!"

The commentator's voice rang with passion.

Nina couldn't help sweating. So fast.

It was one thing to see it from the audience, but facing that speed herself filled her with dread.

Earthquake? No good. Without charging, its power won't disrupt Blaziken's movement. But if I take time to charge, Blaziken will easily strike first…

She realized that while Ground moves were strong against Fire-types, Fire moves were even stronger against Grass.

Torterra might collapse before it could even land a hit.

Waves of scorching air began to converge on Torterra from all directions.

Pale pink, rose, light red, crimson —

visibly, the color of the air itself shifted as the temperature rose higher and higher.

Even the referee and announcer involuntarily stepped back.

Sweat trickled down Nina's forehead, though whether from heat or nerves, it was hard to say.

"Rock Slide — scatter!"

At last, her command came through.

Sensing the danger from the blazing air, Torterra's eyes gleamed. Several jagged boulders materialized around its body.

Whizz, whizz, whizz!

They shot outward in irregular directions.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Under everyone's gaze, the rocks passed through one Blaziken after another — all afterimages before shattering upon the ground, leaving small craters but no solid hits.

A faint sigh rippled through the crowd.

It wasn't loud by itself, but multiplied by tens of thousands of spectators, it carried an immense weight.

Nina grew even more nervous.

The only relief she felt was that Blaziken needed time to prepare and maintain its Heat Wave while keeping up its high-speed movement.

There was still a short window before it could actually attack Torterra.

"Rock Polish — charge forward!" Nina finally made her decision.

But clearly, the command came too late.

Even if Torterra broke through, it would take heavy damage doing so.

Its massive size was both its strength and its flaw.

When attacking, its huge frame made its hits devastating — you couldn't expect a Pikachu and a Torterra of the same level to collide and have Torterra be the one knocked back.

That was simply impossible.

However, that same size made it almost incapable of dodging. It could only rely on endurance and recovery skills.

As Rock Polish activated, a thin, smooth, earthy-yellow sheen coated Torterra's body.

Planting all four feet firmly, the enormous creature began to move.

Thanks to the move's effect, its speed noticeably increased though compared to Blaziken's current velocity, Torterra still looked like it was moving in slow motion, maybe a quarter speed at best.

Sparks of flame flickered across its massive shell as it pushed forward.

One step, two steps, three steps — as Torterra approached the edge of the Heat Wave, the residual damage accumulated faster.

The golden film gave it brief protection, but it soon faded away completely.

Now Torterra's whole body was exposed to the burning wind.

WHOOSH!

With a heavy sound, the charred Torterra burst through the fiery zone and reappeared before the crowd.

"Synthesis!" Nina instantly ordered recovery.

This was the strategy behind her Torterra's battle style to continually leverage its natural advantages and wear the opponent down through endurance.

Pokémon like Venusaur, Exeggutor, Tropius, and Torterra, all bearing plants upon their backs, could use Synthesis with remarkable proficiency and efficiency.

And of course, today's bright, sunny weather was a key factor boosting the move's effect.

A green glow continuously surrounded Torterra, and the life energy restored its body to its optimal state.

The Blaziken, moving so fast that afterimages trailed behind it, gradually came to a stop and stood silently in place, watching.

Nina's sharp gaze swept over Blaziken.

"Bulk Up?" she murmured bitterly as she noticed the rippling muscles beneath its feathers.

On the other side, Silas smacked his lips.

A Swords Dance and a Bulk Up, huh? Not bad.

He didn't bother with Focus Energy—after all, Torterra's hidden ability Shell Armor prevents it from taking critical hits anyway.

Still not quite enough, Silas thought silently, then spoke again:

"Fire Spin!"

Blaziken, without moving from its spot, opened its beak. A whirl of red-hot flames appeared and rapidly expanded, then spun toward the Torterra still performing Synthesis.

Can't dodge anymore, Nina analyzed.

If she kept dodging, she'd just be dragged into a one-sided beating.

Her expression hardened.

"Torterra, Energy Ball!"

Even while using Synthesis, Torterra obeyed instantly, opening its mouth wide.

Green light surged from the air, from its shell, from its very body—condensing into a brilliant orb.

In Torterra's wide, fierce pupils, the swirling Fire Spin reflected closer and closer.

Just as the distance closed, Torterra calmly swung its head and launched the Energy Ball straight into the incoming vortex of flame.

The spinning Fire Spin abruptly froze in place.

As everyone wondered what was happening, the red vortex trembled, then burst apart into scattered embers.

The still-charged Energy Ball broke through the Fire Spin's energy core and continued forward for a short distance before finally dissipating into the air.

"A perfect counterattack! Torterra's Energy Ball struck the center of Fire Spin, dispersing it completely! That level of precision in energy control is remarkable—especially considering this was a Grass-type move overcoming a Fire-type one!"

The commentator's voice rang out at just the right time—that was his job, after all.

In the next instant, Blaziken suddenly appeared right in front of Torterra.

Flames blazed fiercely around its legs.

Nina's pupils contracted sharply.

When she glanced back toward Blaziken's original position, its figure was already gone—not even an afterimage remained.

"Blaze Kick!"

Silas's cold command cut through the air, as if declaring Torterra's defeat.

The fire-wreathed legs struck Torterra's body hard—the Ground-type had just finished using Energy Ball and couldn't move in time.

Not a second late. The timing was flawless.

The sound of impact and Torterra's pained cry echoed simultaneously.

Blaziken recoiled from the rebound, leaping back lightly.

Torterra toppled weakly to the side, its eyes spinning in confusion.

"Torterra is unable to battle! In an overwhelming show of force, Silas's Blaziken claims victory with a powerful Blaze Kick! What incredible offensive power!"

The commentator's voice cracked with excitement.

He wasn't exactly observant, though—he hadn't noticed that Blaziken had boosted its stats using Swords Dance and Bulk Up earlier.

Silas, on the other hand, had planned it all.

Even Nina had caught at least one of those buffs.

Then again, that was to be expected.

Otherwise, the commentator would be the one standing in the arena right now.

As for the audience? They were even less likely to notice.

From their point of view, Silas's Blaziken had simply been dominating—flashy, relentless, and decisive.

Cheers erupted, echoing through the stadium.

Sure, Torterra's counterattack with Energy Ball breaking through Fire Spin looked cool, but to most spectators, it was just "a move clash."

They didn't realize how difficult it actually was for a Grass-type to precisely disrupt a Fire-type area attack.

The commentator's technical praise was mostly lost on them.

After the referee announced the result, Nina silently recalled her Torterra.

"Type disadvantage…" she sighed quietly.

But her eyes still burned with determination.

Grass-types were her faith and conviction.

"Your turn, Abomasnow—I'm counting on you!"

She threw out her second Poké Ball.

Naturally, her opponent remained Blaziken.

After all the effort Silas had put into powering it up, there was no reason to switch it out now.

A massive white Pokémon appeared on the field—its dark green hands, feet, and tail were thick and stubby, like evergreen branches, with four cone-shaped green growths on its back resembling pinecones.

As soon as Abomasnow appeared, the weather darkened.

The blazing heat of the battlefield was instantly replaced by a chill.

The temperature dropped sharply, and Blaziken's breath became visible in the cold air.

"What's this—trying to get yourself knocked out?" Silas blinked.

Was she shell-shocked from the last round?

Abomasnow, with its Grass/Ice typing, takes quadruple damage from Fire-type moves.

He couldn't quite figure out her plan—

but whatever. He'd win first, think later.

"Blaze Kick—charge it up!" Silas commanded without hesitation.

Given the ×4 weakness, even a low-power Ember would deal nearly devastating damage.

There was no need for flashy attacks—speed was key.

Flames burst across Blaziken's feathers as it moved at blinding speed.

The roar of its charge filled the air.

The temperature contrast between the two Pokémon was stark the path of Blaziken's movement was marked by shimmering heat waves.

"Abomasnow, Protect!" Nina ordered firmly.

She hadn't lost her cool; she hadn't "given up."

Her purpose in sending out Abomasnow wasn't to win this exchange, it was something else entirely.
