Chapter 936: The Calamity Spread Across the Fairy Kingdom
Three days ago, Eiji blasted the magic circle in the sky with a single shot and rushed straight into the royal castle without stopping.
Inside the royal castle, he confronted the Queen for a full hour.
Soon after, the Queen announced to all of Camelot that she would take the invader as the Fairy Kingdom's Queen Consort, leaving the many fairies who had been eagerly anticipating a great battle between the Queen and the invader utterly flabbergasted!
Even so, Camelot quickly fell into celebration, rejoicing over the new Queen Consort for three whole days and nights!
However, at the end of the festivities, the Queen's husband appeared.
Beryl Gut.
He was a man whom the fairies of the past would have found quite amusing, but in the eyes of today's fairies, he was utterly dull.
The reason for this was simple: Beryl was still Beryl—he hadn't changed at all, and topics about Proper Human History remained popular among the fairies.
Yet, this Fairy Kingdom now had a Queen Consort who was like a star descended from the heavens, so noble it was beyond words!
All the fairies flocked around the Queen Consort like moths to a flame, and no one paid any further attention to this so-called Queen's husband.
Beryl went from being a hot commodity to an unwanted black bun in the blink of an eye.
Beryl Gut was not the kind of man to care about such things, but he still sought out Eiji.
This was only natural. In the Lostbelt under his charge, a human of unknown origin and identity had appeared, possessing astonishing strength. Moreover, as if to compete with him, this human had been appointed as the Queen's Consort. Beryl had no choice but to test this man named Eiji.
And then, in front of all the fairies of Camelot, Eiji chopped Beryl's five limbs into mincemeat.
There was no reasoning, no room for negotiation.
Not even the fairies, let alone the Queen, could react in time. In a single encounter, Eiji reduced Beryl Gut to a limbless torso!
His five limbs were minced beyond recognition, with not a trace of their original shape remaining.
According to Eiji, he had detected a disgusting scent from Beryl and couldn't resist acting on impulse.
Afterward, he expressed sincere apologies, but Mr. Beryl, who had been screaming like a duck on the spot, did not accept his apology at all.
To quell Beryl's resentment and prevent further trouble between the two, the Queen had no choice but to separate them.
She stayed in the royal castle to heal Beryl's injuries, while Eiji was sent out to clear his mind.
Eiji's outrageous behavior even shocked the Fairy Knight Gawain—Bagstock.
Originally, Bagstock should not have interfered in matters like the Queen's harem disputes. However, both of the Queen's consorts were extraordinary individuals, each capable of shaking the very foundations of the Fairy Kingdom. If either of them caused trouble, it could lead to national turmoil!
This made it impossible for Bagstock to stand by and do nothing.
Even at the risk of being minced into meat paste by the Queen Consort, she fearlessly offered her counsel!
"You are truly a worthy knight."
Eiji smiled and praised her.
"Speaking of which, I don't know much about you yet. Your real name is Bagstock, right? Why were you given the name Gawain?"
"…"
Bagstock fell silent.
She opened her mouth as if to say something.
But in the end, he said nothing.
"The reason I was granted a name by Her Majesty was primarily due to achieving victory in a battle against the Calamity two hundred years ago..."
As if nothing had happened, she continued respectfully and meticulously recounting her past without any exaggeration, simply narrating her accomplishments in a straightforward manner.
This was common knowledge throughout the Fairy Kingdom.
However, just like Beryl Gut, this consort from the Human Order naturally knew nothing about it.
After all, he had only arrived in this Fairy Kingdom five days ago. It wouldn't do to let the consort develop misconceptions about this land.
"Calamity? What is that?"
Eiji inquired.
"That is... a kind of curse."
Barghest pondered for a moment, carefully choosing her words.
"But it seems there's no need for me to explain. Perhaps the consort would benefit from witnessing it firsthand to better understand the Calamity!"
As she spoke, Barghest's tone grew stern and resolute.
"All troops, form ranks! Mors have appeared! Display the power you take the most pride in for the consort! I will not tolerate any disgraceful performances!"
"Yes, Sir Gawain!"
The knights roared in response, quickly forming ranks in small groups, raising their spears and shields as if facing a formidable enemy.
Curious, Eiji lifted the curtain of the carriage.
The so-called "Calamity" appeared before his eyes in the most direct manner imaginable.
It was something that could hardly be called a living creature.
Covered entirely in pitch-black, alien skin, its ominous presence struck the eyes and ears like a curse, as if merely looking at it would infect one with its venomous malice!
The thing moved upright like a creature, but its writhing advance was as repulsive as a drifting, oversized insect!
"Ha!"
The knights, shields raised and spears at the ready, charged at the blackened creatures with disciplined precision.
"That is the curse known as 'Mors'!"
Barghest remained by the carriage, her eyes surveying the entire battlefield.
"They may appear alive, but they are already dead. Those writhing forms are nothing more than walking curses—curses that target fairies exclusively. Any fairy contaminated by Mors will inevitably perish in time!"
The knights under her command were among the strongest fairies in the Fairy Kingdom. Even so, against these walking curses, they could only deflect them with their shields before striking from a distance with their spears. None dared to engage in close combat recklessly.
To do so would mean contamination by the curse of Mors!
"Even you, the Fairy Knights, can't withstand it?"
"Not exactly. Those of us who have received names from Her Majesty the Queen are immune to the poison of Mors. That's why we often patrol the lands, dispersing clusters of Mors before they grow too numerous."
"Are there many Mors?"
"Yes, they appear all over the Fairy Kingdom, often in groups. If their numbers accumulate, they may even give rise to something far more terrifying—a King of Mors!"
Barghest's expression was icy and merciless, her eyes showing no pity for the Mors.
"Every century brings a minor calamity, every millennium a great calamity—these endless disasters have haunted this land since long before the founding of the Fairy Kingdom... A millennium ago, a Mors King emerged, marking the scale of a great calamity, which then became a catastrophe threatening the entire Fairy Kingdom!"
In this Fairy Kingdom, countless calamities like the Mors exist.
A minor calamity occurs every hundred years!
A great calamity occurs every thousand years!
Like a breathless patient constantly groaning in agony, countless afflictions ravage its body again and again!
This is the Fairy Kingdom of Britain, this is the Lostbelt of Britain!
