Chapter 34 - Neon Veil

The Neon Veil club pulsed with chaotic energy, its holographic lights slicing through Shenzhen's undercity haze. Alex Mercer slipped through the crowd, the defector's chip—Dr. Lin's last gift—heavy in his pocket, pointing to Viper, Zenith's shadow exec. His memories—New Haven, Valor's orbs, Fae's fierce warning—burned brighter, fueling his rebellion against the mindwipe that made him AM-17. Huei moved beside him, her holo-device concealed, her sharp eyes scanning the club's chaos. Shvery trailed, his bandaged shoulder stiff, his distrust a loaded gun. Carlton's orders echoed: Find Lin's trail, no mistakes.

"Viper's here," Alex whispered, his staff collapsed in his gear. Lin's words—"Neon Veil—find him!"—and Fae's note—They've taken your mind—drove him. The Control Grid's kill switch, tied to New Haven, was his mission now.

Huei's micro-comm buzzed, her voice low. "Chip's signal—VIP lounge, north side. Viper's meeting someone."

"Stay sharp," Alex said, memories surging—P.A.I.R.E.'s raids, Maya's grit, "You're our edge!" A flash hit—a burning city, Fae's smirk, "Kid, you're in deep!"—but he pushed through, heart racing.

Shvery's growl cut through. "You're too cozy with her, Mercer. Carlton'll hear it."

"Focus on the op," Huei snapped, defusing. But Shvery's eyes burned, a storm brewing.

The lounge loomed—guarded, exclusive, pulsing with bass. Huei hacked a side door, her device bypassing sensors. "In," she whispered, slipping through. Alex followed, Shvery grudgingly behind. The room was dim, velvet and chrome, a holo-table glowing with data. A figure stood—tall, cloaked, Viper—handing a drive to a masked operative.

"That's him," Alex hissed, creeping closer. Viper's voice was silk, chilling. "New Haven's relay is live—Grid activates in days."

Alex's blood ran cold. New Haven—his city, his fight. A memory roared—his parents' screams, Valor's shield—nearly dropping him. Huei steadied him, her eyes urgent. "You okay?"

"He's targeting my home," Alex whispered, rage boiling. "We take him."

"Recon only," Shvery warned, rifle ready. "You're pushing it."

Alex ignored him, staff extending. Viper turned, eyes glinting—cold, calculating. "Mercer," he purred. "Zenith's lost pup."

The operative lunged, blade flashing. Alex parried, staff crackling, instincts honed by memories—Fae's blade, Marcus's orders. Huei stunned the operative, her staff sparking, while Shvery fired at guards storming in, blood seeping anew. "You idiot!" he roared at Alex.

Viper slipped toward a hidden exit, drive in hand. "Stop him!" Alex yelled, diving through chaos. A flash hit—a lab, Lin's voice, "You were our hope!"—slowing him. Viper's blade grazed his arm, pain flaring, but Alex tackled him, pinning him against the wall.

"Kill switch—where is it?" Alex demanded, staff at Viper's throat.

Viper laughed, unflinched. "New Haven's core—guarded by Zenith's best. You're too late."

Guards swarmed, forcing Alex back. Huei hacked a holo-screen, pulling Viper's drive data—Grid schematics, New Haven's relay coords. "Got it!" she shouted, ducking a bolt.

Shvery took a hit, grunting, but kept firing. "Exfil, now!" Carlton barked through comms, his voice ice.

Alex stunned a guard, grabbing Viper's dropped drive. "We're not done," he growled, but Viper slipped free, vanishing into the crowd. The lounge erupted—bolts flew, holograms shattered. Huei dragged Alex toward the exit, Shvery limping behind, blood trailing.

They burst into the alley, Carlton's transport screaming in. Bullets pinged off its hull as they dove aboard, Alex clutching the drive, arm bleeding. Shvery glared, clutching his wound. "You went rogue again, Mercer. You're a liability."

"Got the data," Alex shot back, meeting his glare. Huei's eyes signaled caution, her hand brushing his—the drive's secrets were theirs.

Carlton's voice was a blade. "Debrief, immediately. Mercer, you're on a leash."

The transport sped through Shenzhen's neon jungle, the city a blur of light and shadow. Alex's mind raced—Viper's words, "You're too late," echoed his fears for New Haven. Memories flooded—Daniel's pride, Elena's tears, Zenith's cold rig. The kill switch was in New Haven, and he'd find it.

Back at the facility, Huei met him in a shadowed corridor, her device decrypting the drive. "New Haven's relay—underground, fortified," she whispered. "Viper's meeting Zenith's board there—soon."

"Board?" Alex's heart lurched. Memories surged—the Spire, Veyra's venom, "Zenith's roots run deep."

"Execs," Huei said, eyes fierce. "They're the Grid's architects. Lin's kill switch can fry it, but we need access."

A flash hit—Fae's voice, "Fight back!"—and Alex steadied himself. "We're going to New Haven," he said, resolve iron. "But Shvery's a problem."

"He's close to cracking," Huei warned. "Talked to Carlton—mentioned your 'episodes.'"

"Then we move faster," Alex said, Fae's note a fire in his soul. "Find Lin's contacts—defectors, anyone. We need allies."

She nodded, slipping him a micro-chip. "Defector network—Shenzhen's edge. I'll reach out."

Footsteps echoed—Shvery, rifle slung, eyes blazing. "Caught you," he growled, blocking the corridor. "Carlton's done with your games, Mercer."

Huei stepped forward, voice cool. "We're prepping recon—your job, too."

Shvery's glare didn't waver. "I'm watching. One slip, you're both done."

He stalked off, leaving tension thick. Alex gripped the chip, Huei's alliance his anchor. The Neon Veil had exposed Viper, but the board loomed larger. New Haven was calling, and he'd answer—no matter the cost.

As the facility's hum swallowed him, Alex clutched Fae's memory, her smirk a beacon. The Grid was rising, but he'd tear it down—starting with Viper's trail.
