Chapter 27 - Chapter 27: Tang San Gets Slapped (Part 1)

After Flender agreed to Su Xiaoqi's wager, Su Xiaoqi gave Zhu Zhuqing a quick "good luck" and stepped outside the battle circle.

Flender's gaze swept across the four people inside the ring. "Release your Martial Souls."

All four complied, releasing their Martial Souls one after the other. Tang San then turned to Flender and said, "Dean, I'd like Ning Rongrong to first enhance Zhu Zhuqing. Otherwise, they have no chance."

He had already heard about Zhu Zhuqing's Martial Soul from Dai Mubai yesterday. With his Blue Silver Grass—a control-type Martial Soul—he held a natural advantage over agility-type Martial Souls like Zhu Zhuqing's. Not to mention he also had a two-level advantage in soul power.

So even if Zhu Zhuqing received a buff from Ning Rongrong, Tang San was still fully confident in his victory.

"Go ahead," Flender nodded. He also knew the difference in strength between the two sides was vast. As for Su Xiaoqi's so-called bet, Flender just assumed the boy was clinging to his pride.

"Ning Rongrong, since they're being so generous, let's gladly accept it!" Su Xiaoqi shouted from outside the ring, barely able to contain his laughter. Tang San was currently providing a textbook example of brag now, cry later.

"Sure thing." Ning Rongrong smiled as she enhanced Zhu Zhuqing with both "Strength" and "Speed." Then she turned and said with a grin, "Zhuqing, I'll be over there watching your performance!"

Zhu Zhuqing nodded. Not only did she plan to win—she intended to win spectacularly.

"Let the match begin."

As Flender's voice fell, he soared into the air.

"Xiao Wu won't be making the first move. You may attack first," Tang San said politely, making a gentlemanly gesture toward Zhu Zhuqing.

"Hypocrite," Zhu Zhuqing said coldly. She had no patience for any man who wasn't Su Xiaoqi.

Since Tang San was kind enough to let her make the first move, Zhu Zhuqing wasn't about to stand on ceremony. Her body suddenly launched forward, leaving behind a trail of phantom images as she charged straight at Tang San.

Despite her incredible speed, Tang San remained calm. After activating his Purple Demon Eye, he was able to track her movements clearly.

But the next second, Zhu Zhuqing's figure vanished entirely from his vision.

"This is impossible!"

It wasn't just Tang San—Xiao Wu and the rest of the Shrek students couldn't spot her either. Only a few of the instructors, whose soul power far surpassed Zhu Zhuqing's, and Su Xiaoqi himself, could track her movements.

"That's a soul bone skill!"

Floating above the battlefield, Flender was shocked. He had clearly seen a flash of light from Zhu Zhuqing's left leg. And the soul power she was now emitting was not that of a level 27—it was a solid level 30.

Flender instinctively glanced at Su Xiaoqi on the sidelines. It was obvious that the sudden overnight jump in Zhu Zhuqing's soul power must have something to do with him.

He'd given her a soul bone—an extremely high-grade one at that—and it had caused this leap in ability.

As Flender recalled their earlier wager, his expression darkened. No wonder this kid dared to propose such terms. He had this all planned. And we even naively allowed Ning Rongrong to buff Zhu Zhuqing beforehand.

"It looks like Tang San and Xiao Wu are going to lose this match," he muttered to himself.

With Zhu Zhuqing's increased speed from both the soul bone and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Pagoda's buffs, what could Tang San and Xiao Wu possibly do to win?

Flender watched as the two were still frantically trying to locate Zhu Zhuqing, already guessing how this battle would end.

On the battlefield, things went just as Flender predicted. The moment Zhu Zhuqing disappeared from sight, Tang San maxed out his Purple Demon Eye. Even then, he could only barely make out faint afterimages.

Left with no other option, he summoned his Blue Silver Grass to encircle himself and Xiao Wu as a protective barrier. Even if he couldn't see the attack, if Zhu Zhuqing made contact, the vines could trap her like a cage.

But Zhu Zhuqing didn't attack from the ground. Instead, she struck from above.

"She can walk in mid-air?!"

Flender and the other Shrek teachers were stunned. Even with all their experience, they'd never seen such a bizarre skill.

With two loud thuds, Tang San and Xiao Wu were sent flying out of the ring. None of the watching students could even tell how they were hit.

"Zhuqing, you're amazing!"

Ning Rongrong was the first to cheer. She had expected Zhu Zhuqing to win—but not this easily.

"Good grief... Her man being a monster is one thing, but she's just as scary."

Ma Hongjun turned to look at Dai Mubai. "This isn't what you told us, man. I sparred with Tang San and Xiao Wu briefly this morning, and I know for a fact they're no pushovers."

But in front of Zhu Zhuqing, they didn't even have a chance to fight back. He couldn't even see how she attacked.

Dai Mubai, for his part, had no words. He knew Zhu Zhuqing's Martial Soul better than anyone else here.

Netherworld Civet was known for speed, yes—but not to the point where even he couldn't track it. For the first time, he wondered whether, if they performed a Martial Soul fusion technique together, they might actually be able to defeat his older brother Davis.

He was convinced Zhu Zhuqing still had some feelings for him. Otherwise, why hadn't she used this kind of power when facing him yesterday?

His only hesitation now was whether he could swallow his pride and humble himself before her—even if it was all just for show.

As for Su Xiaoqi?

He's just a brute with some strength. How could he compare to me—the third prince of the Star Luo Empire?

Meanwhile, Tang San and Xiao Wu picked themselves up from the ground outside the ring. They exchanged a bewildered glance—neither of them fully understood what had just happened.

"Brother San… I'm not dreaming, am I?"

Xiao Wu's eyes were dazed. She had no clue how she'd been sent flying.

"Xiao Wu..."

Tang San looked at her, unsure of what to say. He'd been on high alert, mentally preparing for every kind of possible attack Zhu Zhuqing could launch. The only thing he hadn't anticipated was an assault from above.

By the time he sensed it, it was already too late. He hadn't even had the chance to raise a defense before he was kicked out of the ring.

This was the most crushing defeat he had ever suffered since becoming a Soul Master. Thinking back to all the arrogant things he'd just said, he now felt utterly humiliated.

Seeing his dejection, Xiao Wu quickly offered comfort. "Brother San, we just underestimated her this time. Next time, we'll win it back."

"I know… Thank you, Xiao Wu."

Tang San smiled and nodded, then glanced at Zhu Zhuqing, who had now returned to Su Xiaoqi's side. He silently vowed that the next time they fought, he would not lose again.

Over the past few years, as his strength had grown, so too had his pride—without him even noticing. But after today's crushing defeat, he wouldn't allow himself to be complacent ever again.
