Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: A Temporary Victory

Ethan didn't let himself relax, not even as he left the golf club with his father's veiled warning still hanging in the air. Daniel Carter might have called off the deal, but men like him didn't simply walk away. He was retreating, for now, but Ethan knew better than to think the war was over.

As he drove back to the house, his grip on the steering wheel tightened. Sarah had been pulled into his world, a world he had tried so hard to leave behind. And the worst part? He couldn't guarantee that his father wouldn't try something else.

The moment he walked into the house, Sarah was there, waiting for him in the living room. She was sitting on the edge of the couch, her fingers tightly intertwined, her eyes filled with questions. Mason was there too, arms crossed, watching Ethan carefully.

"Well?" Mason asked.

Ethan sighed, rubbing a hand down his face before speaking. "For now, he's backing off. But it won't last forever."

Sarah's shoulders relaxed slightly, but the tension in her face remained. "What does that mean? Are we safe?"

Ethan looked at her, then at Mason. "Safer than we were yesterday. But Daniel doesn't like to lose. He'll come back when he thinks he has the upper hand."

Mason nodded. "Then we make sure he never does."

Ethan appreciated his confidence, but he knew that keeping Daniel at bay wasn't going to be easy. His father had resources, influence, and no moral compass. They needed to be prepared for whatever came next.

Sarah stood up, stepping closer to Ethan. "Then what do we do now?"

Ethan reached out, brushing his fingers against hers. "Now, we rebuild. And we stay ready."

A Plan for the Future

The next few days were spent reinforcing their defenses—both physically and strategically. Mason helped Ethan secure the house, adding extra security measures, cameras, and motion sensors. Sarah, despite her initial hesitation, insisted on being part of the planning.

"We can't just sit around waiting for him to make another move," she argued one evening as they gathered around the dining table, maps and notes scattered before them.

Ethan met her determined gaze. "You're right. We need to be proactive."

Mason tapped his fingers against the table. "I still have contacts who'd be willing to help. People who don't exactly like Daniel Carter."

Ethan considered that. "We need leverage—something more permanent. We got lucky with the anonymous leak, but that won't stop him forever."

Sarah hesitated before speaking. "What if we build something bigger? Something that makes it impossible for him to operate without consequences?"

Mason raised an eyebrow. "You talking about taking down Daniel Carter for good?"

Sarah's lips pressed together. "Isn't that the only way to be truly free of him?"

Ethan exhaled, rubbing his temples. "It's not that simple."

Mason smirked. "It's dangerous, sure. But it's doable."

Ethan looked between them, torn between wanting to protect Sarah and realizing that she was right. As long as Daniel was out there, he'd never stop looking over his shoulder.

Finally, he nodded. "Then we make sure this time, he falls and never gets back up."

Gathering Strength

Ethan and Mason spent the next week reaching out to their old connections, people who had once worked under Daniel but had long since turned against him. Many of them had their own reasons for wanting to see him taken down.

As the plan came together, Sarah proved to be just as vital. She researched, compiled files, and helped connect the dots between Daniel's illegal activities. The deeper they dug, the clearer the picture became—Daniel Carter wasn't just corrupt; he was deeply embedded in a web of crime, and they had the evidence to prove it.

One night, as Ethan and Sarah sat together reviewing documents, she leaned back and stretched. "This is bigger than I thought."

Ethan nodded. "It always is."

She turned her head to look at him, studying his expression. "Are you okay?"

He hesitated, then sighed. "I just hate that you have to be part of this."

Sarah gave him a small, reassuring smile. "I chose to be. And I'm not going anywhere."

Ethan reached for her hand, intertwining their fingers. "I know."

The Final Push

With everything in place, it was time to set the final trap. They had gathered enough evidence to cripple Daniel's operations, but they needed to be strategic in how they released it.

Mason leaned over the laptop, scanning through the files. "We send this to the right people, and Daniel won't just be running—he'll be buried under legal hell."

Ethan nodded. "It has to be airtight. No loose ends."

Sarah pulled out a burner phone. "I've already drafted the anonymous tips. The media will pick it up within hours."

Mason grinned. "Then let's light the match."

Ethan took a deep breath before clicking send.

There was no turning back now.

Daniel's Last Stand

Less than twenty-four hours later, the fallout began. The media exploded with stories exposing Daniel Carter's involvement in fraud, money laundering, and illegal deals. Law enforcement launched an immediate investigation, and several of Daniel's closest allies began distancing themselves.

Ethan expected a response, and it came sooner than he thought.

His phone rang late that night.

Daniel's voice was cold. "You think this ends with a few headlines?"

Ethan didn't flinch. "No. I think it ends with you behind bars."

Daniel's silence was heavy. "You're a fool if you think I'll go down without a fight."

Ethan's grip on the phone tightened. "Then let's see who falls first."

For the first time, Daniel didn't have an immediate comeback.

And that was how Ethan knew—his father was truly afraid.

This war was finally coming to an end.
