Chapter 8 - Quite Place

Agatha POV

After the incident occurred, they checked on us to see if we were okay, and they found that we were fine, so they released us. Luckily, it's a hassle. There's always a time when our body shuts down, allowing us to recover, and we choose it to happen so we can get ready for the coming day. However, the one thing we don't expect is that we will cause some chaos at the camp.

Anyway, it was fine now, and we were preparing for the first field day, which would be the first time we would be out scouting the area to ensure that there were no infected, especially Abnormals, around the area. That can cause complications when we enter the tunnel; we don't want to be cornered inside, where there are limited ways out and no available, clear maps provided.

In today's scouting, the leader will be Jack, one of the 12 guides that the Empire had assigned in Gaza, their expert on the layout to avoid the pitfalls of infection. At the end of the day were not here for the fight; they were here for the resources that the underground tunnel has, it's still early and the sun still not out and the fugs are still tick as hell the roads are not so visible by now and its likely this is the type of time that most of the abnormals that have high since of hearing likes the most because there prays quite has no visions.

Some members of Team 1 and Team 2 of the scavengers are present at this scouting. I saw some new faces from the scavengers; they appear to be the people who ride the other trucks, and the guy with whom I had a pretty heated conversation at the site is also here. We're a total of 10, including the guide provided by the empire.

It's almost time now that the sun is out and the fogs are starting to vanish. For the guest, we are required to attend every scouting event that occurs. We don't have any problem with this, but it is pretty strange, considering that no other family house is mixed with the others; it is suspicious, and I think there is something in this.

It looks like everyone is here, and I saw Selena's irritated face. I laughed in my mind. She's always this impatient type of person; she hates it when she's delayed, and, unluckily, one of our members is super late to the time that was set. I see that it was the woman who was from the other tent earlier. I can tell from her white armband that she is part of the medic team; everyone has a different color on their armband. Blue for the guide, red for the field, white for the medic, and green for the guests.

"What a very special person?" the guide said as he faced the newly arrived person using a monotone voice, "What do you think you're doing, delaying all of us? If you're not that interested in this matter, you should have said we can exclude you and make you stay at the base until we're done raiding the tunnel." After a few words, the girl apologized for being late.

Jack gave each of us maps of the area and explained which street we are now on and what the color on the map tells us: green for minimal to non-infected area, blue for the area where there are a couple of abnormal spots and infected areas around, and lastly, the red areas are considered as death areas and should not be entered and if mistakes occurs depending to the casualty backup are impossible.

As we passed areas that are on the map that Jack said to us, you can see that some of the places around are taken over now by nature, but, strangely, there are no animals around, even the sounds of insects are non-existent, and the paved roads are clean like all the things are moved aside the road.

"Hey, are the things on the road being moved by the empire?" Selena asks Jack, It looks like she also has the same thoughts as me right now. The roads around here are spotless, as if they hadn't been touched in years; those hurdles should provide an extraordinary distraction.

"No, the empire did not move anything from this area around when we got here; it's already like this. You can see it's not normal, but according to the scouts we sent here the first time, they surveyed the surrounding area and found no infected individuals. It's most likely that the hurdle passes this area, which is why nature takes over it." As we look around, the area is like a straight description from a fairytale book, with tall trees, grasses, wildflowers, and herbs visible around us. But there's something wrong around this; it's so quiet to the point that it gives me this paranoia that someone or something might be waiting on us on one of these roads.

I hold the hilt of my sword and heighten my senses, who knows, everything can happen in this world now. It's better to be safe and competent than die. I also saw Selena's hand holding the handle of her axe in her back and glance in my direction, signaling me to look and move to the side of the road into a quiet area, watching the building and sidewalks as we passed around.

Looks like Jack saw that we are both so wary about the surrounding "look, you don't have to be so wary, there are other teams that pass this area right now, we might be the LAST to arrive at the tunnel area right now, because we're 30 minutes late already." Jack, as he emphasized the word late, even though he assured us, I can't ignore that something feels odd around here.

It's been almost 30 minutes since we left the base, and most of the time we see infected, but Jack always says that we should avoid killing them as necessary, because we don't want to catch the attention of the other infected around the area. As we proceed, we start to see the different families, and it appears that we're the last ones to arrive.

The base is quite far from the tunnel, and this area of the city is almost the same as the previous scene. We pass through the whole area, which is covered in greenery, but the difference is that this side is more dense as we get farther from the city. The area around us is fenced, and it appears that some of the Empire people have already been here for quite a while now, as there are already tents set up. It looks like we will be sleeping in one of the tents while the infected are outside the area. What a great plan! Fantastic, terrific, and amazing.

 [Morning 6 day]

It's been 6 days since we got here at the entrance of the tunnel, which was once a subway station of the company SCAN, a company of weaponry. Before the outbreak happened, they made this to operate underground for safety and away from the eyes of the people, and most of all, the authorities.

Today is the day that the scavenger team and the other two families, Silver Vanguard and Vortex, will go with them inside the tunnel for the first time since we got here. Silver Vanguard is a family located in the coastal area of the north east of the Capital, named Vanport, a medium trading area where the main producer of silver at the north east area. While the Vortex is a military school of the empire, most of its participants right now look like they are 20s or 30s.

Looks like everybody is now ready, we are all meeting at the entrance of the tunnel, looks like we're always the last person to arrive, I can see the different wristbands on them, silver vanguard are white, while the vortex are blue, and we scavenger are green, while the empire guides are black with red on it. So there are 4 guides right now, one for each family team and 1 for the actual tunnel guide; those guides that are in the tunnel are trackers.

"So, for the information of everyone, I'm Carl. We will be handing maps to you that you should be familiar with. These maps are designed based on the trackers that have been inside many times, but we highly encourage everyone to never lower your guard, cause this mark maps are just a small portion of the whole tunnel." It looks like this tunnel is so large that most of the area in the tunnel is uncharted.

"Any questions before we enter, we can't afford to be loud at the tunnel for safety purposes." Noise can attract abnormal individuals who have highly developed hearing capabilities. Then one person from the silver vanguard raised her hand.

" I'm Stephane, a nurse. Currently, how many trackers and people of the empire are inside the tunnel?"

" As for that Stephane right, there are only 20 people allowed to enter and exit the tunnel, and those are the trackers only, so don't lose your tracker and map." There is a limited number of people who can go in and out to control the information, then a guy from the SG raises his hand.

"About the items that the informant said, any news about them?"

"For that, we still have no clue about its exact location, but there are some rooms in the tunnels where we found high-caliber weapons, and it's a good sign that we might find it sooner or later."

"How about the survivors? The informant also said that there are survivors inside the tunnels." his from the Vortex, he looks like his in his 20s, he looks handsome, looks like Selena can read my mind, she gives me a bombastic side eye with an eyebrow raise, then I sign her, What?

" For a month of tracking the area, we don't see any survivors, so no more questions, and let's head inside now."

As we enter the tunnel, the first thing that you can feel is that it's so cold, is can even see the fog on the mask every time we breathe. When we go deeper into the tunnel, I can hear a strong breeze of wind echoing inside the tunnel, making it look like it's breathing. And aside from the breeze, there's this odd thing since we stepped here in Gaza, the whole place is so quiet, no single sound could be heard, not even insects, and it's giving me a bad feeling about this.
