Miri's Pov
The world blurred around me, every sound too sharp and every heartbeat too heavy. Riven stood in front of me, his body a shield, his magic flaring bright as he blocked another one of Denise's wild attacks.
Around us, the cave like chamber was still in chaos. Shadows lunged, remnants of the nightmare that refused to die. Students staggered to their feet, some clutching their heads, still dazed from the illusions Riven had cast earlier to buy us time. I could hear their groans, but my eyes stayed locked on the impossible sight in front of me—Denise, alive and not alive, thrashing against my mate like a puppet on strings.
Uncle Lucian and the others were scattered around the edges, taking care of what was left of the creatures and dealing with the coming through students. They struggled to contain them , knocking most out, not wanting to harm the students.
