Chapter 543 - Title: “Why Are They Standing?”

Scene: Blackwood Citadel – Helipad Command Tower

POV: Amara

The wind was howling over the tower deck, sending my cloak whipping around my boots. I stood alone beneath the midnight floodlights, high above the Citadel, with my eyes locked on the digital feed projected on the command tower's glass wall.

There he was.

Chris.

Standing at the mouth of the cave like the damn mountain had birthed him.

The Shadow Hawks were there—clearly in position. I could see their figures from the drone's thermal overlay, perfectly flanked, surrounding him like the deadly specters they were trained to be.

But none of them had moved.

Not one.

> "Why are they standing?" I snapped to the tactical officer behind me. "Why are they not approaching?"

The woman flinched at the sound of my voice. Her fingers stumbled over the command screen.

> "They… they're waiting, Your Majesty. Commander Hawk-Lead confirmed visual identification, but says—"

I cut her off.

> "I didn't ask if they saw him. I asked why the hell they're treating him like a god rising out of stone!"

I pressed my finger hard on the glass, pointing at the golden signature glowing on screen.

> "That man has bled for this empire. That man is the empire. Get me a live feed. Now."

A few seconds passed, then—

The screen blinked. Static. Then clarity.

And there he was.

My King.

His coat was torn. His lip was bloodied. His left hand gripped his side like he could barely stand upright.

But his eyes?

Unbroken.

Untamed.

Unforgiving.

He knew we were watching.

He stared through the drone lens, as if he could see me.

No, as if he knew I was watching.

> "Your Majesty…" the officer said carefully, "Commander Hawk-Lead is requesting final instruction. Do they approach?"

I didn't answer for a long moment.

Then I exhaled.

> "No."

> "Your Majesty?"

> "Let them wait," I said softly, staring at that glowing silhouette. "Let them remember what it feels like to be near something greater than themselves."

I touched my earpiece.

> "Activate the royal convoy. Ten minutes from now, I'll be airborne. He's not returning to me. I'm going to him."

---

Because if he chooses to walk back into this Empire, he will not do it alone.

Not this time.
