When I woke up the next day, it was already late. The sun was shining bright outside, but I still wanted to bury myself under the covers and go back to sleep. My body ached. Not painfully, just tired—exhausted in that way you feel after everything inside you has been wrung out.

But my stomach had other plans. Reluctantly, I rolled out of bed, took a shower, and dressed slowly, dragging my feet the whole time. The last thing I wanted was to face anyone. Not today. Not after everything.

I had already switched off my phone the night before, unable to take another ping, another headline, another message I wasn't ready to read. The old clock on the wall read 2:00 PM. I'd managed to sleep half the day away. Small wins.
