Chapter 125 - Chapter 124: Howls in the River

"How about this crate?"

Beidou casually selected a crate that looked to be of decent quality, opened it, and showed it to Bai Luo.

Sunsettias are a common sight in the wild.

However, for those of better quality and sweeter taste, some people would specifically hire members of the Adventurers' Guild to pick them and then sell them.

Compared to Mora, adventurers cared more about experience and adventure rank, so they were quite willing to take on such tasks that seemed to only benefit the employer.

After all, the task of picking Sunsettias wasn't dangerous, and they could even snatch a few Hilichurl treasure chests along the way. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement.

"How does it taste?"

Bai Luo glanced at the Sunsettias and asked with some uncertainty.

Because he knew that one crate of these Sunset fruit had been touched by him, what if... what if something went wrong?

For example, what if it was a tiny bit sour?

Unsuspecting, Beidou took a Sunsettia from the crate and took a bite.

Sweet juice immediately filled her mouth, and some of it even trickled down the corner of her lips, a sight that would make one's mouth water.

"You don't even need to add sugar when you juice this stuff, it's super sweet!"

Giving a thumbs-up, Beidou said with great satisfaction.

After all, she had carefully selected these herself, so how could the quality be poor?

"Then thank you, Captain Beidou. How much Mora for this crate?"

Bai Luo touched his wallet and asked.

This time he had learned his lesson. Before looking for Kazuha, he had made a special trip to the Northland Bank to withdraw a significant amount of Mora.

However, when out and about, it was indeed most comfortable to spend a friend's money.

"It's just a crate of Sunsettias, not worth mentioning. Consider it a gift from me."

After finishing the Sunsettia in her hand, Beidou ordered someone to seal the crate and handed it to Bai Luo.

She didn't take a single Mora that Bai Luo offered.

This item wasn't rare to begin with. The tips she gave for a single meal at Wanmin Restaurant could almost buy half a crate.

It wasn't worth charging money for something so trivial.

After thanking her, Bai Luo heaved the crate of Sunsettias into his arms, disembarked from Beidou's Alcor, and went into Liyue Harbor.

He wasn't worried at all that Beidou would abandon him in Liyue. Based on the intelligence he had, it seemed both Beidou and Ningguang were eager for him to leave Liyue as soon as possible.

Even if she had to leave immediately for some reason, if he didn't return, Beidou would absolutely not set sail.

After disembarking and walking along the bustling docks, Bai Luo noticed that the few people following behind him were acting a bit strange.

They appeared to be shopping and would even haggle with the vendors, but they had been empty-handed the entire way, not having bought a single thing.

It seemed... they were likely the ones assigned to follow him.

Even though Bai Luo had managed to extricate himself from the great vortex of Liyue, the necessary surveillance would still be in place.

After all, no one wanted a soldier from a nation of freedom wandering their streets at will, especially when Bai Luo's existence was equivalent to a soldier carrying a nuclear weapon.

Bai Luo could understand this level of tracking.

Understanding was one thing, but he wouldn't just let them follow him.

So after turning a corner, his figure vanished completely. The trackers saw this, looked at each other for a moment, and then left only a small group to continue searching for Bai Luo's whereabouts while the rest went back to report.

And in the next block, a young man in a black trench coat was squatting with a smile in front of a mongrel dog.

[A/N:- Mongrel dog means a mixed breed dog or a Mutt]

The crate of Sunsettias had been swapped by Bai Luo for a wicker basket, with some herbs placed on top.

"Good doggy."

Bai Luo looked at the mongrel in front of him and tentatively extended his right hand.

"Woof!"

This mongrel was very smart. Upon seeing Bai Luo's hand, it immediately understood his intention.

Then it lifted its hind leg and sat on his hand, wagging its tail.

"???"

Holy crap, whose dog is this? So... proactive.

Calmly retracting his hand, Bai Luo casually rinsed it in a nearby water bucket of unknown ownership and took out a Sunsettia from the wicker basket.

"Handsome doggy!"

Seeing the Sunsettia in Bai Luo's hand, the dog actually revealed a human-like smile, and its tail wagged even more vigorously than before, as if it had a small motor attached.

Clearly, it recognized what this was and had probably been fed one before.

"Woof!"

It opened its mouth and unhesitatingly bit into the Sunsettia in Bai Luo's hand.

For the first three seconds, it ate with relish, even smacking its lips.

But three seconds later, its motor-like tail suddenly stopped and tucked between its legs.

"Whimper..."

The dog stopped chewing, its two front paws frantically pawing at its mouth as if it had eaten something terrible.

But no matter how it pawed, drool still pooled on the ground.

"Whimper woof whimper!"

After pawing for a while, the mutt finally realized it was futile. Whimpering, it dashed to the side.

Ultimately, it plunged headfirst into the small river nearby.

A few minutes later, the dog's mournful howls could still be heard downstream.

It sounded as tragic as that Hilichurl that had been... by the Akademiya teacher all night.

[A/N: In one of the previous chapters, a Hillichurl was taken advantage of by a Drugged Akademiya researcher]

Bai Luo: "..."

Surely not? Beidou was clearly enjoying it just now. How could it be...

Looking at the bitten Sunsettia in his hand, Bai Luo once again turned his gaze to the orange cat nearby, which had been licking its paws and watching the show.

The orange cat, noticing Bai Luo's gaze, did not realize what it was about to face and let out a somewhat puzzled, cute meow.

"Meow?"

A few minutes later, a few cat cries were added to the mournful howls downstream.

"This makes no sense..."

Looking at the two notched Sunsettias in his hand, Bai Luo began to question his life.

Before Bai Luo touched this crate of Sunsettias, he would never know if the Sunsettias were sweet or sour; they would forever exist in a superposition of both sour and sweet.

Only when someone tastes it does the superposition suddenly end, causing a wave function collapse, which then stabilizes it into one of the two flavors, sweet or sour. (I'm just making this up, don't take it seriously... I'll admit I'm wrong in advance if I am.)

Originally, Bai Luo thought that after Beidou ate a Sunsettia, it would be endowed with the flavor of sweetness and shouldn't change after that.

He never expected his situation to surpass Schrödinger's cat; even when its taste had already been determined, he could still change its flavor.

[A/N: In quantum mechanics, Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment concerning quantum superposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical cat in a closed box may be considered to be simultaneously both alive and dead while it is unobserved, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur. This experiment, viewed this way, is described as a paradox.]

In other words, regardless of whether this Sunsettia was sweet before, as long as he touched it, this thing would only have one flavor left.

Sour.

Hiss... Bai Luo's Sunsettia is terrifying to this extent.

Schrödinger's coffin lid was about to fly off.
