Chapter 542: Eyes in the Shadows
Poor Celebi was still trying to fix her hair, swearing to prove she wasn't an onion.
Arthur, however, was deep in thought.
Old Tyranitar's words had actually answered many of his previous questions.
For example, why did she age even slower than Specter, despite not being a Dragon or Ghost type? She was still in her prime today.
And how did she suddenly master Dynamaxing in the desert, and even improve her strength after leaving Arthur?
The current Old Tyranitar was extremely powerful. Arthur roughly estimated that she might have already surpassed Old Flame at his peak.
It seemed everything came with a price!
There was no such thing as a free lunch!
Old Tyranitar, perhaps due to sharing the Dark typing, had been chosen by Yveltal, the apex Dark-type Legendary. He wanted to recruit her into the Legendary faction.
Even though a Tyranitar couldn't become a Seed for an avian Legendary like Yveltal, she could at least become another solid pillar for this desert!
Judging by the results, Yveltal had undoubtedly succeeded. Old Tyranitar had stayed in the Ashen Desert for over a hundred years and was still the strongest pillar of this desert today.
But to achieve this, Yveltal had used some underhanded tricks.
For example, intercepting Celebi's time-traveling visits and deliberately concealing the truth of Arthur's arrival.
Realizing this, Arthur, Old Flame, and Specter all suddenly felt a bit sad.
"So you can't leave the desert anymore, can you?"
The Legendary naturally had his own calculations.
Old Tyranitar nodded sadly.
"Yes, after accepting Yveltal's gift, I can no longer easily leave this desert."
As expected...
Among the Pokémon, only the little dragonfly had known about this for a long time, so she appeared calmer.
Little Eevee seemed to understand something too. He suddenly jumped down from Arthur's shoulder, went to Old Tyranitar's feet, and nuzzled her with the ruff around his neck.
"Eev, eevee." — I'm sorry, Auntie Senior. I shouldn't have been afraid of you just now.
He was apologizing for his earlier retreat.
Only then did Old Tyranitar notice this Little Eevee she didn't know yet.
"Roar?" — Whose child is this?
Arthur put away his sadness and smiled peacefully. "You should be able to guess. It's Leafeon's descendant."
Old Tyranitar was stunned for a moment, then bent down to pick up Little Eevee, examining him carefully, and sighed.
"Roar, oo."
The gist was: It's so unfair. How could that mischievous Leafeon have such a sensible and cute descendant?
Thinking of the nest of Larvitar she had seen earlier who looked at everyone with arrogance, Arthur suddenly laughed.
It seemed every family had its own problems.
The warm topic quickly diluted the sad atmosphere in the air.
No matter what, reunion was always a joyous thing.
Even if they couldn't adventure together anymore, knowing that each other was well was a kind of happiness.
However, soon after, Old Tyranitar was the first to break free from these complex emotions and remembered the business at hand.
She signaled Arthur to follow her again.
This confused Arthur at first.
Weren't we here to catch up? Is there something else?
And Old Tyranitar's expression suddenly became very solemn.
At this moment, even the usually carefree little dragonfly became serious and urged Arthur to hurry up.
What's going on?
With curiosity, Arthur followed Old Tyranitar into a passage leading underground behind the bedroom.
Tyranitar are Rock-type Pokémon. Before evolving, their first two forms are Rock/Ground types, so they actually like underground spaces.
Old Tyranitar was no exception. The underground part of her palace was almost as large as the above-ground part.
Entering the underground space, Arthur first saw several Pokémon.
In their eyes, Arthur saw wisdom, reason, and a hint of divinity without exception.
These Pokémon were of various species: Excadrill, Scrafty, Diggersby, and even a Swampert, which was normally rare in the desert.
Their common point was probably that they were all bipedal beast-like forms.
This was undoubtedly consistent with Groudon!
"Are these... Seeds?"
Old Tyranitar nodded.
These were some of the Seeds she, Garchomp, and the little dragonfly had rescued during their operation.
She guessed that these Seeds would likely be useful later, so she took in some homeless Seeds who had no tribe.
If the Sandslash hadn't been mistaken by the little dragonfly for Arthur's new doggy, he probably would have been arranged here too.
"Roar." — I heard you humans are looking for them.
Arthur nodded, smiling happily.
"Yes, you've helped a lot."
Since Arthur entered Old Tyranitar's palace, the cameras hadn't followed him, so the people outside still didn't know: Arthur was not only leading the points leaderboard, but he was also likely to lead the Seed collection leaderboard by a huge margin!
But then, Old Tyranitar signaled him to keep following.
This puzzled Arthur.
Are these Seeds still not what she wanted to show me?
Then what could it be?
He followed Old Tyranitar a bit further and arrived at a very hidden basement.
"This is?!"
Here, he found a lot of organized materials hanging up, clearly made by humans. There were written records and photos.
Many photos looked like they were taken secretly, from tricky angles, either steep overhead shots or back views without showing the face.
If he didn't know better, he would have thought this was a stalker's diary.
But the target in the photos wasn't a female celebrity or an internet idol, but Arthur himself!
Arthur recognized many of the candid shots: they were of him appearing in the Kubfu Alliance Professional League not long ago.
The little dragonfly also became serious and explained to Arthur on behalf of Old Tyranitar.
"We found these in the enemy camp where the Seeds were held.
"They retreated in a hurry and didn't have time to take everything, so we accidentally entered a room like an archive and found that these people have been tracking you, Master!
"We can't read human writing, but we recognize your photos, so we brought back everything we could collect from that room and tried to restore it to how it was.
"Master, be careful. Those people seem to have known of your existence for a long time!"
In that moment, Arthur couldn't help but feel a chill down his spine.
All this time, in a place he didn't know, there had been a pair of eyes secretly monitoring him?!
If the little dragonfly and Old Tyranitar hadn't accidentally raided that base and found a room they didn't have time to destroy, Arthur might never have known about this!
Who are these eyes hiding in the shadows?
Arthur vaguely had a guess!
