Chapter 11 - The One Who Came for Something

The world had changed.

Kael could feel it.

The moment the stranger stepped onto the battlefield, the atmosphere became heavier.

The myth-tier monster stopped moving.

Cain's sword remained raised.

Iria's hands were still glowing with the remnants of her magic.

And Kael...

Kael couldn't take his eyes away from the man standing several meters ahead.

He looked completely human.

No monstrous features.

No armor that revealed his identity.

No visible weapon.

Just a dark coat covered in dust, short black hair, and a pair of eyes that seemed almost too calm for the battlefield they had entered.

But the pressure coming from him was unmistakable.

It was powerful.

Far too powerful.

Kael's fingers tightened around his weapon.

"Who are you?"

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, he looked past Kael.

His eyes moved toward the ruined city.

Then toward the monster.

Then toward something buried beneath the broken streets.

For only a second, his expression changed.

Relief.

He had found it.

Kael noticed.

"What are you looking at?"

The man finally looked at him.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Not you."

Kael frowned.

Cain stepped forward.

"Then explain why you're here."

The stranger glanced at Cain.

Something about his eyes changed.

"Cain Velcrow."

Cain's expression hardened.

"You know me?"

"Everyone who knows anything about Hunters knows you."

Cain raised his sword.

"That doesn't answer my question."

The stranger smiled.

"I didn't come here to answer questions."

Iria moved beside Kael.

"Then why did you come?"

The stranger looked at her.

For a moment, his expression became completely blank.

Then he pointed toward the ground.

"Because something is down there."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What's down there?"

The stranger smiled.

"That's what I'm here to find out."

A sudden roar shook the battlefield.

The myth-tier monster attacked.

Its enormous claws tore through the air.

Cain immediately moved.

"Kael!"

Kael jumped backward.

The claw struck the ground.

BOOM!

Stone exploded.

Cain slid beneath the monster's arm and swung his sword upward.

The blade struck the creature's scales.

A deep cut appeared.

The monster screamed.

Iria unleashed a wave of energy.

The blast struck the monster's side and forced it backward.

Kael raised his hand.

Golden energy began forming around his arm.

Heaven's Gate.

The familiar pressure returned.

But Kael stopped himself.

Not yet.

Something about the stranger bothered him.

The man wasn't watching the monster.

He wasn't watching Cain.

He wasn't watching Iria.

He was watching the ground.

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"He's ignoring the fight."

The stranger suddenly moved.

Not toward Kael.

Not toward the monster.

Toward the center of the ruins.

Kael understood.

"He's going somewhere."

Kael rushed after him.

"Hey!"

The stranger didn't stop.

Kael increased his speed.

The stranger glanced over his shoulder.

For the first time, Kael saw his eyes clearly.

There was no anger.

No excitement.

No fear.

Only determination.

Kael reached him.

He swung his weapon.

The stranger moved his head slightly.

The attack missed.

Kael immediately followed with another strike.

The stranger blocked it with his bare hand.

The impact sent a shockwave through the street.

Kael's eyes widened.

He had blocked it.

With one hand.

The stranger pushed him away.

Kael slid several meters across the ground.

His boots dug into the stone.

"You're strong."

The stranger looked at his hand.

Then at Kael.

"So are you."

Kael charged again.

This time, the stranger attacked.

His fist struck Kael's stomach.

Kael couldn't react.

The force lifted him from the ground.

He crashed through a wall.

Pain spread through his body.

"Kael!"

Iria ran toward him.

Cain blocked her path.

"Don't."

She looked at him.

"What?"

Cain stared at the stranger.

"He's not trying to kill Kael."

Iria looked back.

The stranger had already turned away.

He was walking toward the center of the battlefield again.

Cain's expression darkened.

"He's trying to reach something."

Kael pulled himself from the rubble.

Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth.

He wiped it away.

The pain was real.

But something else bothered him more.

That man could have killed him.

He didn't.

Why?

Kael looked toward the stranger.

The man was standing in front of a massive crater.

The crater had been created by the myth-tier monster earlier.

The stranger crouched.

He placed his palm against the ground.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

Then he whispered something.

Kael couldn't hear it.

But the ground reacted.

A faint vibration passed through the ruins.

The stranger's eyes widened.

"Still here."

Kael heard him.

"What is?"

The stranger looked back.

His expression became cold.

"You ask too many questions."

Kael walked toward him.

"And you hide too much."

The stranger stood.

"That's because you don't need to know."

Kael tightened his grip.

"If you're hiding something in this city, then I do need to know."

The stranger smiled.

"You're a Hunter."

Kael frowned.

"So?"

"Hunters think everything belongs to them."

Cain approached from behind.

"Not everything."

The stranger looked at him.

Cain stopped several meters away.

"Whatever you're searching for, leave it."

The stranger laughed quietly.

"You don't even know what it is."

"That doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

Cain's sword pointed directly at him.

"Then we're going to have a problem."

The stranger's smile disappeared.

"I expected that."

The myth-tier monster roared again.

All four of them turned.

The creature's body had begun changing.

The cuts Cain had made were closing.

The wounds Iria had caused were disappearing.

Kael's expression changed.

"It's healing."

Cain's eyes narrowed.

"Not healing."

He looked carefully.

"It's absorbing."

The monster's scales began glowing violet.

The energy around it grew stronger.

Iria took a step backward.

"How?"

Cain's expression was grim.

"It's feeding on the energy we've been using against it."

Kael looked at the stranger.

The stranger wasn't surprised.

In fact—

He looked annoyed.

"You're wasting time."

Cain glared at him.

"What?"

The stranger looked toward the crater.

"I don't care about that thing."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Then what do you care about?"

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, he raised his hand.

The air around his body distorted.

A dark aura formed around his fingers.

Kael immediately felt something.

A pressure.

Similar to his own.

But different.

It wasn't Heaven's Gate.

It wasn't Hell's Gate.

Yet the sensation was frighteningly familiar.

Kael whispered:

"What are you?"

The stranger looked at him.

"A human."

Kael shook his head.

"No."

The stranger smiled.

"That's what makes you uncomfortable, isn't it?"

Kael didn't respond.

"You thought your power was something unique."

The stranger looked at the golden energy forming around Kael.

"But it isn't."

Kael's heartbeat increased.

"What do you mean?"

The stranger raised his hand.

Dark energy gathered.

"I mean the world is finally waking up."

The myth-tier monster charged.

Cain moved first.

His sword flashed.

The monster's claw collided with the blade.

The impact shook the entire battlefield.

Cain's feet sank into the stone.

"Kael!"

Kael knew what Cain meant.

He ran.

Iria followed.

They attacked from opposite sides.

Kael struck the monster's left side.

Iria attacked its right.

The creature roared.

Cain jumped.

His sword pierced the monster's shoulder.

For a moment, the creature staggered.

Then—

A violet shockwave exploded from its body.

Everyone was thrown backward.

Kael hit the ground.

His vision blurred.

The stranger remained standing.

The monster turned toward him.

It sensed him.

The stranger stared back.

"Move."

The monster roared.

The stranger sighed.

"You really are annoying."

He raised one hand.

The dark aura exploded.

A massive wave of energy slammed into the monster.

The creature was pushed backward.

Kael stared.

That attack...

It was different from anything he'd seen.

There was no magic circle.

No chant.

No weapon.

Just raw power.

The monster recovered almost instantly.

The stranger frowned.

"Stronger than expected."

Cain looked at him.

"You knew it would be here."

The stranger didn't answer.

Cain's eyes narrowed.

"You knew."

"I suspected."

"You brought us here?"

"No."

"Then who did?"

The stranger looked at the dead Hunters scattered across the battlefield.

"I didn't."

Cain stared at him.

"Then someone did."

The stranger said nothing.

That silence was enough.

There was another player.

Someone who had brought the Hunters here.

Someone who had awakened the monster.

Someone who might have known what was buried beneath the city.

Kael looked around.

For the first time, the ruins didn't feel abandoned.

They felt watched.

A distant sound echoed.

Metal.

Kael turned.

At the far end of the street stood several figures.

Association Hunters.

At least twenty.

Their weapons were raised.

One of them shouted:

"Everyone freeze!"

Cain sighed.

"Perfect timing."

The squad leader stepped forward.

"We received reports of unauthorized Hunters entering the restricted zone."

He looked at Kael.

Then Cain.

Then Iria.

Finally, his eyes settled on the stranger.

His expression changed.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

The stranger glanced at the squad.

Then toward the crater.

His expression became serious.

"They're going to make this difficult."

Kael heard him.

"What are you talking about?"

The stranger suddenly moved.

He disappeared.

Kael's eyes widened.

"Where—?"

A second later—

BOOM!

The Association squad was thrown into chaos.

The stranger wasn't attacking them.

He was running through them.

Dodging.

Moving.

Ignoring every attack.

He wasn't interested in fighting.

He was heading somewhere.

Kael realized it.

"He's using them as a distraction."

Cain understood too.

"Follow him."

Kael nodded.

They ran.

The stranger reached the crater.

He jumped inside.

Kael followed.

The deeper he went, the colder the air became.

The sounds of the battle disappeared.

The city above seemed distant.

The walls of the crater were covered with strange markings.

Kael slowed.

He recognized them.

Not consciously.

But something inside him did.

His chest began hurting.

"These..."

Iria stopped beside him.

"What?"

Kael touched one of the markings.

A flash appeared in his mind.

A door.

A golden door.

Chains.

A voice.

"Do not open it."

Kael pulled his hand away.

He breathed heavily.

Iria grabbed his arm.

"Kael?"

"I'm fine."

She didn't believe him.

But she didn't push.

Ahead of them, the stranger had stopped.

He was staring at a stone wall.

"Found it."

Kael approached.

"What?"

The stranger placed his hand against the wall.

A symbol appeared.

Two circles.

One white.

One black.

Kael froze.

He knew that symbol.

The same symbol from his visions.

The same symbol that appeared whenever Heaven's Gate reacted.

His eyes widened.

"What is that?"

The stranger looked at him.

"You really don't know?"

Kael shook his head.

The stranger studied his face.

Then he laughed quietly.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You truly know nothing."

Kael stepped forward.

"Tell me."

"No."

Kael grabbed his collar.

"Tell me!"

The stranger didn't resist.

He simply looked at Kael.

Then down at Kael's hand.

"You shouldn't touch me."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because you might wake something up."

Kael released him.

The stranger turned back toward the wall.

He pressed his palm against the symbol.

Nothing happened.

He frowned.

"Wrong."

Kael stared.

"What are you trying to do?"

The stranger ignored him.

He tried again.

Nothing.

His frustration grew.

He punched the wall.

BOOM!

The entire underground chamber shook.

Still nothing.

Kael understood.

Whatever he wanted—

It was behind that wall.

But he couldn't open it.

The stranger turned toward Kael.

His eyes settled on him.

Kael immediately understood what he was thinking.

"No."

The stranger smiled.

"I didn't ask anything."

"You don't have to."

The stranger took a step forward.

"You have something I need."

Kael's expression hardened.

"What?"

"I don't know yet."

Kael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The stranger's eyes moved toward Kael's chest.

"The answer is inside you."

Kael froze.

Iria stepped between them.

"Stay away from him."

The stranger looked at her.

"I don't want him."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Then what do you want?"

The stranger looked back at the sealed wall.

"Something that belongs to the past."

A tremendous explosion shook the chamber.

The wall cracked.

Everyone turned.

The myth-tier monster had followed them underground.

It crashed through the ceiling.

Stone fell everywhere.

Cain shouted:

"Move!"

The monster landed.

The chamber filled with violet energy.

The stranger looked irritated.

"You again."

The creature roared.

The stranger stepped forward.

Kael grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

The stranger looked at him.

Kael pointed toward the wall.

"The monster is reacting to it."

The creature was staring directly at the symbol.

Not at them.

At the wall.

Kael's eyes widened.

"It knows what's behind there."

The stranger's expression changed.

For the first time—

He looked genuinely surprised.

The monster charged.

The stranger dodged.

The creature struck the wall.

BOOM!

The symbol flashed.

A crack appeared.

Kael felt Heaven's Gate react.

His body suddenly became hot.

Golden light exploded from his back.

Iria shouted:

"Kael!"

Kael fell to one knee.

The golden light formed behind him.

A massive circular structure appeared.

The Gate.

Heaven's Gate.

But this time—

It was different.

The Gate wasn't opening.

It was responding.

The sealed wall began glowing.

The stranger stared.

"That's it."

Kael looked at him.

"What?"

The stranger smiled.

"I found it."

Kael struggled to breathe.

"What did you find?"

The stranger didn't answer.

The wall began breaking apart.

Something was behind it.

Something enormous.

Something old.

The stone collapsed.

A chamber appeared.

Inside was a single object.

A small black crystal.

Floating above a pedestal.

Kael stared.

The stranger's eyes widened.

"Finally."

He walked toward it.

Kael stood.

"Don't."

The stranger stopped.

"Why?"

"I don't know."

The stranger smiled.

"Neither do I."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"Then why do you want it?"

The stranger looked at the crystal.

"I don't know."

Silence.

Kael stared at him.

The stranger continued.

"But I know I need it."

That answer was somehow more frightening than certainty.

The stranger stepped forward.

Kael blocked him.

"You aren't taking it."

The stranger sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't make this difficult."

Kael raised his weapon.

"I don't even know what it is."

"Neither do I."

"Then why?"

The stranger looked directly into Kael's eyes.

"Because something is telling me to take it."

Kael froze.

"What?"

The stranger touched his chest.

"Something inside me."

Kael's expression changed.

The stranger's power surged.

The chamber shook.

Kael's Heaven's Gate responded.

Golden energy collided with dark energy.

Neither moved.

The stranger smiled.

"Now I understand."

"What?"

"We're connected."

Kael's eyes widened.

"To what?"

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, he attacked.

The fight was unlike anything Kael had experienced.

The stranger moved faster than him.

Every strike was precise.

Every movement had purpose.

Kael blocked one attack.

Then another.

Then another.

The fourth strike broke through his guard.

Kael was thrown backward.

He slammed into the wall.

Pain shot through his shoulder.

The stranger continued toward the crystal.

Kael pushed himself up.

"No."

Heaven's Gate began opening.

Golden light filled the chamber.

The stranger stopped.

He looked back.

"Don't."

Kael's eyes glowed.

"You're not taking it."

The Gate opened slightly.

Power flooded through Kael.

The chamber shook.

The stranger's expression became serious.

"If you open that fully, everyone here dies."

Kael hesitated.

The stranger smiled.

"You still can't control it."

Kael's jaw tightened.

He hated hearing those words.

But they were true.

The Gate wanted to open.

Kael wanted to stop it.

His body couldn't decide.

Then the monster attacked.

The stranger turned.

The monster's claw struck him.

He blocked it.

Kael saw his chance.

He rushed toward the crystal.

His hand reached out.

The moment his fingers touched it—

Everything stopped.

The world became silent.

Kael saw darkness.

Then light.

Then countless doors.

Thousands.

Millions.

Some were open.

Some were closed.

Some were broken.

And somewhere among them—

Two stood apart.

One golden.

One black.

Kael heard a voice.

Not the same voice as before.

This one was quieter.

Older.

"You are not the first."

Kael's eyes widened.

"What?"

The voice continued.

"And you will not be the last."

A figure appeared in the darkness.

Kael couldn't see its face.

Only its silhouette.

It stood between the two Gates.

Then it turned toward him.

"They are coming."

Kael tried to move.

"Who?"

The figure disappeared.

The crystal shattered.

Kael returned to reality.

He fell backward.

The stranger stared at the broken crystal.

His expression was impossible to read.

"No..."

Kael looked at his hands.

The crystal was gone.

Not destroyed.

Gone.

The stranger slowly approached him.

"What did you do?"

Kael shook his head.

"I don't know."

The stranger stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the stranger smiled.

Not happily.

Almost as if he had just confirmed something.

"So that's how it works."

Kael looked up.

"What?"

The stranger turned away.

"Nothing."

Kael stood.

"You knew something would happen."

"I suspected."

"You're lying."

The stranger looked back.

"Of course."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

The stranger walked toward the exit.

Kael raised his weapon.

"You're not leaving."

The stranger stopped.

"Do you really want to fight again?"

Kael didn't answer.

The stranger smiled.

"You'll see me again."

"Who are you?"

The stranger paused.

Then finally answered.

"My name..."

He looked over his shoulder.

"...isn't important yet."

And then he disappeared into the darkness.

The chamber began collapsing.

Cain shouted from above.

"Kael!"

Kael looked up.

The ceiling was breaking apart.

Iria ran toward him.

"Come on!"

Kael followed.

They escaped just before the underground chamber collapsed.

The ruins shook.

Dust filled the air.

The myth-tier monster was gone.

The stranger was gone.

The crystal was gone.

Only the destroyed chamber remained.

Cain approached Kael.

"What happened?"

Kael didn't answer.

Cain grabbed his shoulder.

"Kael."

Kael looked at him.

"There was something down there."

Cain's expression hardened.

"What?"

Kael looked toward the collapsed ruins.

"I don't know."

Iria stepped closer.

"Did the stranger take it?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

"Then where is it?"

Kael looked at his hands.

"I touched it."

Cain's eyes narrowed.

"And?"

"It disappeared."

Silence.

Cain stared at him.

"You absorbed it?"

"I don't know."

"Did it hurt?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

Cain looked toward the ruins.

His expression became serious.

"Then we have a bigger problem."

Kael nodded.

"Yeah."

Iria looked at him.

"What?"

Kael looked toward the horizon.

The sun was beginning to rise.

He could still feel something inside his body.

Something unfamiliar.

Something quiet.

Something waiting.

"I think..."

He stopped.

"What?" Iria asked.

Kael closed his eyes.

For a moment, he heard the voice again.

They are coming.

Kael opened his eyes.

"I think that man wasn't looking for the crystal."

Cain frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Kael looked at the place where the stranger had disappeared.

"He was looking for a way to find something."

"Something?"

Kael nodded.

"I don't know what."

Cain's expression darkened.

"And neither does he?"

Kael shook his head.

"No."

Iria looked confused.

"Then why would he risk everything for something he doesn't even understand?"

Kael looked at her.

"That's what scares me."

Far away from the ruined city...

The stranger walked alone.

His clothes were torn.

Blood covered one side of his face.

But he didn't seem bothered.

He stopped beneath a dead tree.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the ground.

Then he opened his hand.

A tiny fragment of black crystal rested in his palm.

He smiled.

"So you really were here."

The fragment pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

He closed his hand around it.

"I'll find the rest."

A voice came from behind him.

"You failed."

The stranger didn't turn.

"No."

"You didn't obtain the object."

"I obtained something better."

"What?"

The stranger smiled.

"I found him."

Silence.

"Who?"

The stranger looked toward the distant horizon.

"Kael."

The voice behind him became quiet.

"You found the Gate bearer?"

The stranger's smile disappeared.

"No."

He looked at the crystal fragment.

"I found someone who doesn't even know what he is."

Back in the ruined city, the Association began securing the area.

Hunters moved between the rubble.

Medical teams treated the wounded.

Reports were being written.

Questions were being asked.

But nobody had answers.

Who was the stranger?

What had he wanted?

Why had the myth-tier monster been guarding the ruins?

What was the crystal?

Why had it reacted to Kael?

And most importantly—

Why had the stranger said he would see Kael again?

Kael stood alone on top of a broken building.

Iria approached.

"You've been standing here for ten minutes."

Kael didn't look at her.

"I'm thinking."

"About him?"

"Yeah."

Iria stood beside him.

"Do you think he'll come back?"

Kael stared into the distance.

"I know he will."

"How?"

Kael touched his chest.

"I can feel it."

Iria frowned.

"That isn't comforting."

Kael smiled slightly.

"It wasn't supposed to be."

She looked at him.

For a few seconds, neither spoke.

Then Iria quietly asked:

"Are you afraid?"

Kael thought about it.

The answer came easily.

"Yes."

Iria looked surprised.

Kael continued.

"But not of him."

"Then what?"

Kael looked toward the sky.

"The thing he was looking for."

Iria didn't understand.

Neither did Kael.

But somewhere deep inside him...

Something had changed.

Something had awakened.

And for the first time since Heaven's Gate appeared in his life—

Kael wondered if the Gate had chosen him...

Or if he had been chosen because of it.

Three days later, the Association headquarters received a report.

Incident Report: Ravenfall Ruins

Myth-tier monster: Eliminated.

Hunter casualties: 17.

Unknown awakened individual: Unidentified.

Unknown artifact: Missing.

Kael's involvement: Under investigation.

The final line of the report was different.

It had been added by someone unknown.

Only six words.

"The second one has awakened."

Nobody knew what it meant.

Nobody except the stranger.

And somewhere beyond the borders of the known territories...

Another person opened their eyes.

A strange energy filled the room.

The person looked at their hands.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then—

A small crack appeared in the air.

The person smiled.

"Finally."

The world had changed.

Kael wasn't the only Hunter evolving.

And he wasn't the only one who had awakened.

But the greatest danger wasn't the people who had gained power.

It was the people who already knew...

what that power was for.
