"Junting, I want to talk to you."
The moment the banquet ended, Dugu Xin walked straight over, calling out before Chen Junting could even respond.
"Hmm? Okay."
Chen Junting blinked, a little surprised at Dugu Xin's urgency. He turned to Ning Tian, who simply smiled knowingly and gave a small nod.
"Yuner and I will take sister Feng back to the dormitory first," Ning Tian said, tugging Nanmen Yuner along and dragging the half-dazed Wu Feng with her. "You two, talk slowly."
Left alone with Dugu Xin, Chen Junting glanced around at the now-empty grass field, then casually gestured.
"Walk and talk?"
"Yeah..." Dugu Xin answered a little hesitantly.
They set off, side by side. The noise of the banquet faded behind them, and the night stretched quiet around them.
After a few silent steps, Dugu Xin suddenly mouthed something.
Chen Junting caught it immediatelyâ"immortal herb."
He arched a brow. "You're bringing this up now?"
The afterglow of the party still lingered in the air, but Chen Junting's gaze stayed sharp and steady, despite the wine still warm in his veins.
Thinking back to some things, Chen Junting smirked slightly.
"Just like Tang San Eight Spider Lances ten thousand years ago."
He rubbed his fingers against his ring. A blue gem flashed, and with a burst of faint starlight, a soul bone appeared in his handâshaped like sharp spider legs, glowing purple and silver-white, its metallic luster making it look almost alive.
"You don't think so," Chen Junting added lazily, waving the soul bone a little, "so now,I give this to you."
Dugu Xin froze, stunned. His breathing hitched.
"That... that's the soul bone from the Human-Faced Demon Spider?"
"Right." Chen Junting nodded, careful to keep the soul bone wrapped in soul power to avoid contact. "You know â the spider's venom and devouring nature don't suit the Seven Kill Sword at all. I kept it, but never planned to use it."
Dugu Xin stared at the shining bone, struggling to keep his hands steady as he reached for it. Chen Junting didn't hurry him â just watched with quiet eyes.
Finally, Dugu Xin took it with both hands, like accepting something sacred.
Chen Junting smiled faintly.
"Even the in the face of death, you still have the courage to choose. Not bad."
Dugu Xin looked up at the sky, exhaling a deep breath. "Life... really is too short."
Chen Junting chuckled under his breath. "well you poisoned, of course your life short ."
Dugu Xin just ignoring his foul mouth, anyway he already got used to it.
"You called me over to give me a gift," Dugu Xin said hoarsely, "but I ended up getting much more than that."
"Welcome to friendship," Chen Junting said, voice low but sincere.
A breeze swept past, stirring the trees around them.
Dugu Xin clutched the soul bone tightly. His voice dropped.
"You really think Shrek had no other way?"
Chen Junting shrugged. "Wang Yan doesn't lie. He might be polite about it, but when it matters, he's blunt."
Dugu Xin gave a bitter smile. "Ten days ago, before the holiday, it wasn't Mu Jin who came for me. It was Wang Yan. He told me â straight up â that the academy couldn't help me."
Chen Junting's gaze darkened slightly but he said nothing.
"And then..." Dugu Xin continued, "he suggested I leave. Said I didn't belong here."
Chen Junting pulled something from his ring with a flick of his hand.
"Stretch out your hand."
Without thinking, Dugu Xin obeyed. A plain scroll appeared between them, sealed with the pattern of a Yin-Yang Eye.
Dugu Xin's heart skipped.
"This..."
He ran his fingers over the seal, breath catching.
"It's from your ancestors," Chen Junting said calmly. "It's a map. Not just a hiding spot â a land full of true immortal herbs and ancient treasures. A place that might finally suppress your family's poison."
Dugu Xin stared at the scroll, emotions surging in his chest.
"You didn't know?"
"You guessed it," Dugu Xin whispered, voice unsteady.
He clutched the scroll to his chest.
"I came here just to try my luck," he added after a moment, bitterly smiling. "Didn't expect to find anything."
Chen Junting clapped him on the shoulder.
"You found something better. You found people who care."
For a moment, neither of them spoke. Only the quiet night and their long shadows stretched under the stars.
"Once you fix your poison," Chen Junting asked suddenly, "what will you do? Stay?"
Dugu Xin opened his mouth... but no words came out.
Chen Junting just gave a small smirk. "Doesn't matter. Either way, you're one of us now."
The words settled into the night air, warm and heavy.
Dugu Xin smiled genuinely for the first time all night.
"You know..." Chen Junting said, thinking aloud, "there's something about you. The way the people treated you... they saw your poison and feared you. They couldn't see past it."
Dugu Xin barked a soft laugh.
"Same story everywhere."
"You're wrong," Chen Junting said. "You're not the one who's poisonous â it's the world that's blind."
Dugu Xin lowered his head, shoulders shaking slightly â not from sadness, but laughter.
"Thanks, brother," he said at last.
Chen Junting grinned. "Stop it,you sound ambiguous, that's disgusting."
They kept walking, step after step, under the endless night sky, holding their secrets, their hopes, and their stubborn dreams.
Tonight, Dugu Xin finally got what he came for.
And maybe, just maybe â he found something even better.
