I don't know how long we just stood there. Breathing like we'd just finished a marathon, eyes red, chests rising and falling like waves crashing into each other. It wasn't funny anymore. It wasn't dramatic. It was just… heavy. Real.
Anne's voice broke the silence, low but steady.
"What are we then?"
She looked at me, like she'd been holding that question in for too long.
"This relationship… what was it all along?" Her eyes glistened. "Of all time, what were we even doing?"
And I got it. We couldn't even blame each other anymore.
We both cheated.
We both lied.
We both pushed until we were too far from where we started.
And now, all that was left between us was the brutal honesty of two people who didn't know how to stop destroying each other.
I leaned back against the counter and let out a dry laugh. Not because it was funny, but because it was sad.
We were both just… wow.
And then I asked the question that was burning my throat.
