Chapter 63: The Night of the Full Moon
Time flies,
In a New York minute—
Three days passed.
On the third evening, a full moon hung in the sky, mirroring the night of the Nine-Tails Rebellion. A cold, pale moonlight bathed the entirety of Konoha, casting an eerie stillness over the village.
Throughout Konoha, the major clans had seemingly been notified. Each clan issued a strict grounding order: no one leaves their homes tonight, no matter what happens.
Behind the scenes, the village's shadow forces were fully mobilized. Every hidden unit entered high-alert combat mode.
Hokage Office, Hokage Building - Central Konoha
"Another sleepless night, huh?"
Sarutobi Hiruzen inhaled deeply from his pipe, exhaling with a long sigh.
"Hahaha, the Uchiha clan has brought this on themselves."
The elders—Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu—sat nearby, their aging faces set with self-satisfaction. It was as if they believed they were finally completing a historical task left unfinished by the Second Hokage.
"Yes."
Sarutobi nodded with a chuckle, exhaling another cloud of smoke.
He had always advocated weakening the Uchiha clan gradually, and now that Shimura Danzo was taking the heat, he could stay clean and reap the benefits.
After all, once the Uchiha were wiped out, he already had plans for how to deal with both Danzo and Itachi.
"Sarutobi, once the Uchiha are gone, the Konoha Military Police should be placed under the Elder Council's command," Koharu said with a smug smile. "We've had our eyes on it for a long time."
"You have the Anbu. Danzo has Root. Shouldn't the Elder Council finally have a department of our own?" Homura added, equally pleased.
"…Fine."
Sarutobi cast a deep glance at the two, then nodded. We're all tied to the same ship, he thought. There's no room for betrayal now.
"Good. Then let's wait for Danzo to deliver the good news," the elders said, visibly more relaxed now that they'd secured what they wanted.
Uchiha Clan Grounds – That Same Night
The land of the Uchiha was filled with tension—especially after the mysterious death of Uchiha Shisui. Under the moonlight, an invisible pressure blanketed the area.
Because Shimura Danzo had obtained detailed maps of the Uchiha clan's layout and the shift patterns of their patrols, shadowy figures began slipping into the grounds like ghosts.
Unbeknownst to the clan, the perceptive guards assigned to patrol that night had already been silently eliminated—by none other than Uchiha Itachi.
From start to finish, the Uchiha were unaware that they were already surrounded.
Uchiha Fugaku's Residence – Central District
After dinner, Sasuke Uchiha cheerfully ran off to bed.
"Brother, will you take me to the academy tomorrow?" he asked, hopeful eyes blinking as he paused at the door.
"Yeah, I got it..."
Itachi managed a forced smile.
"Great!"
Blissfully unaware of the tragedy to come, Sasuke closed the door behind him, already daydreaming of tomorrow with his big brother.
He admired Itachi deeply—looked up to him as a hero.
"Sigh…"
Uchiha Fugaku, who had remained silent during dinner, finally spoke. "Good son… you've chosen to stand with Konoha after all."
From the kitchen, Uchiha Mikoto stepped into the room, her hands still wet from washing dishes. She looked calmly at her eldest son.
"Itachi… you're going through with it, aren't you?"
Caught off guard, Itachi panicked. "Father, Mother… you…"
He hadn't expected them to figure it out so easily.
"Silly boy," Mikoto said softly, smiling. "We raised you. Of course we'd know."
"No matter what path you walk, your father and I will support you. Just... please look after Sasuke."
Her voice trembled slightly with sorrow.
"Father… Mother… I…"
Itachi couldn't find his words. He stood frozen, trembling, short blade shaking in his grasp.
"You are worthy of being my son,"
Fugaku said with pride. "As the clan head, I was a failure. But as your father—I understand."
"Do what you must."
Uchiha Fugaku and Mikoto shared a quiet, final look. They had already accepted their fate.
"I'm sorry…"
Itachi, tears in his eyes, slid on his ANBU mask and raised his short blade with trembling hands. He didn't want to do this—but the burden of Konoha's future, Sasuke's life, and the unbearable corruption within the clan weighed too heavily.
Elsewhere, as though on cue, masked Root shinobi hidden throughout the Uchiha district bared cold smiles.
But then—
CRACK.
CRACK.
CRACK.
An eerie sound echoed through the night.
Everyone froze as the air itself began to fracture—like a mirror shattering.
Lines of jagged cracks spidered across the sky over the Uchiha clan land…
