"Hey Dad," ( I say with a bright smile — the kind that always comes naturally when I see my parents).
(My father, James, walks in through the door. He's a strong-built man, with streaks of silver in his hair and that classic old-school charm — the kind of man whose laughter fills a room, and whose eyes still twinkle like a boy when he sees my mom).
[He ruffles my hair with a warm chuckle].
"Hey, sweetie. How are you feeling this morning?"
"Fine, Dad," [ I reply with a soft smile ].
(He wraps his arm around my shoulder, and together, we walk toward the dining room. We sit side by side, like always — comfort wrapped in routine).
"So, Dad… farming going well?" [ I ask with a curious look, genuinely interested ].
[He smiles and nods].
"Yes, sweetie. Everything's going good out there."
[Then, glancing around with a playful glint in his eyes, he asks],--
"And where's my darling?"
( I giggle, knowing exactly what he means ).
(Their love — my parents' love — has always been like something out of a romance novel. They act like teenagers, even now).
[In a teasing voice, I say],
"Darling! Where are you? Your honey is waiting!"
(Just then, my mom walks in holding a tray of food and places it on the table).
"Lena, stop it!" [she says, trying to sound stern].
• "Don't side with your dad. He's always being silly."
(She lightly slaps his shoulder).
[Dad chuckles and leans back a little].
"Aww, my darling," [ he coos in a mock-romantic tone ].
(She sighs, shaking her head, but the smile she hides at the corner of her lips gives her away. She disappears into the kitchen again and returns with a jug of juice, finally sitting down to join us).
( I look at Dad again, my eyes sparkling with mischief ).
"So, Dad… you really love Mom that much, huh?"
"You come straight home from the fields just to see her, don't you?"
[He smiles, leaning forward slightly].
"Sweetheart," [ he says softly ], "your mom is heaven for me. Being with her… makes me feel like the happiest man in the world."
(He gently takes her hand and places a kiss on the back of it).
(And I just stare at them — heart full).
* Awww. *
( That love in the air — it's real. It's the kind of love that doesn't fade with years. The kind that grows stronger with time ).
{I smile to myself, thinking},
• God… I hope one day, I find someone who loves me like that.
• Someone who treats a woman like a real man should.
