Chapter 66 – The Promise

"Come upstairs," Carl said quietly, his voice low but urgent.

I didn't ask questions. I just moved, my feet trailing after his like they belonged to someone else. My heart was still raw, my pride bruised, and every step up that staircase felt like climbing out of a pit I hadn't realized I'd fallen into.

When we reached his room, he shut the door behind us, the click of it closing felt too final, too sharp. He turned quickly and faced me, his expression already twisted with guilt.

"Sidney," he began, taking my hands. His were warm, grounding—but even the steadiness of his grip couldn't quiet the churn in my chest. "I'm sorry. For everything. For what she said, for how she acted—hell, for even breathing the same air as you like she owned it."
