Chapter 11 - The Five Saints

Homeroom – Morning

The classroom buzzed softly as sunlight spilled through the tall glass windows. Twenty students sat in neat rows, half awake, half bored, while Mr. Hales stood at the front, attendance sheet in hand.

"Alright, let's get this over with," he muttered, tapping the clipboard with his pen.

He called out names—each answered with a casual "Here!" or a lazy wave—until he reached one that made everyone pause.

"Yuuki Sato."

The room went silent. No one answered.

Mr. Hales looked up. "Yuuki Sato?"

Nothing.

Someone in the back whispered, "Who the hell is that?"

A few students exchanged confused looks. Even after a whole week of school, no one had ever seen this Yuuki kid.

Light, lounging back in his seat with his usual grin, raised his hand. "Uh, sir? Who even is that? I've never seen anyone with that name before. 'Yuuki Sato' sounds... foreign."

Mr. Hales sighed. "That's... actually a good question. I don't recall meeting him myself."

The class started murmuring again until someone said what they were all thinking.

"Hey, maybe Ragnar knows. He always knows."

All eyes turned toward Ragnar Wyrd—the tall, light-skinned guy with reddish dreadlocks and sharp eyes that always looked like they were analyzing everything. His uniform was slightly unbuttoned at the top, his posture too confident for a student.

Light grinned wider. "Ohhh, the class textbook! Mind educating us, oh wise one?"

Ragnar slammed his desk, standing up with a glare. "Light, call me that again and I swear I'll break your jaw."

The class laughed, and Mr. Hales pinched the bridge of his nose. "Enough! Both of you, sit down before I start handing out detention slips."

Light raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. No need to kill me in front of the class."

"Mr. Wyrd," said the teacher, clearly tired already, "since you apparently are a walking encyclopedia, would you care to enlighten us?"

Ragnar sighed, brushing a lock of his reddish dreadlocks from his face. "Fine." He stood, straightening his uniform, and his tone shifted into that calm, lecturing rhythm everyone secretly admired.

"Yuuki Sato is a Japanese name. 'Yuuki' means courage, and 'Sato' is a common family name in their culture. The Japanese language itself isn't native to our world—it originated from people known as 'heroes' summoned from another realm centuries ago."

Alys, a small girl with long black hair tied neatly behind her head, tilted her head curiously. "Another world? You mean... like, a different plane of existence?"

Ragnar nodded. "Exactly. They were called heros—summoned to fight great threats when our world was at war. But that practice was banned a long time ago."

Magna, the tall boy sitting near the window, crossed his arms. "Why? You'd think bringing in powerful warriors would help, not hurt."

Ragnar's eyes darkened a bit. "That's what people thought at first. But when the heroes arrived, some of them—drunk on their new power—turned against us. They caused what's known as the Second Great War. That's when summoning was outlawed."

The class fell quiet. Even Light looked interested now. "So… what about Yuuki? Is he one of those summoned heroes too?"

Ragnar shook his head. "No. Even after the summoning ban, not all the Japanese heroes vanished. The survivors settled here, built villages, and lived normal lives. Yuuki is probably one of their descendants."

Mr. Hales nodded, glancing at the clock. "Alright, thank you, Mr. Wyrd. That's enough history for now—"

SLAM!

The classroom door burst open, and everyone jumped.

Standing there, breathing heavily, was a boy none of them had ever seen. His skin tone was a bit lighter than Ragnar's, his messy black hair sticking up in all directions. His uniform was slightly wrinkled, and his blue eyes darted nervously around the room.

"I—I'm sorry for being late!" he said, bowing slightly.

Mr. Hales blinked. "You are...?"

"Uh... Yuuki. Yuuki Sato."

The room collectively gasped.

Light leaned toward Magna and whispered, "No way. He actually exists."

Ragnar narrowed his eyes, quietly observing the boy. So that's him... interesting.

Mr. Hales crossed his arms. "Mr. Sato, you've been absent for an entire week and now you're late today. Care to explain yourself?"

Yuuki scratched his cheek, avoiding eye contact. "Uh... I got lost?"

The class burst out laughing.

"Enough," said Mr. Hales sharply. "Three days of detention."

Yuuki dropped to his knees dramatically. "Please, sir! I'm really sorry! I'll do extra work! I'll clean the classroom!"

Mr. Hales sighed, shaking his head but fighting a smile. "Fine. Two days. And be on time tomorrow."

"Yes, sir! Thank you!"

As Yuuki rushed to an empty seat near the back, Light leaned over to Ragnar and whispered, "He's kinda weird... but I like him already."

Ragnar smirked slightly. "We'll see about that."

And as the class finally settled, the faint feeling lingered in the air—

That Yuuki Sato's arrival was only the beginning of something much bigger.

A week after Yuuki's arrival

It didn't take long for Yuuki Sato to become the talk of Saint High. The mysterious new kid with the strange name and nervous smile somehow found himself constantly surrounded by curious classmates — though most just wanted to know about his heritage.

But among them, there were four who truly noticed him — Ragnar, Magna, Light, and Alys.

During lunch one day, Yuuki sat alone under a tree in the courtyard, poking at his food when Light dropped his tray right next to him.

"Well, well, if it isn't the legendary lost boy," Light said, grinning as he sat down.

Yuuki blinked. "Oh—uh, Light, right? You're the guy who almost got punched by Ragnar."

Magna, carrying his food with calm precision, sat across from them. "That's him. He likes trouble."

"Hey, trouble keeps life interesting," Light shot back, smirking.

Ragnar followed last, placing his tray down with his usual quiet composure. "You missed combat class again, Yuuki."

Yuuki scratched his cheek awkwardly. "I overslept."

Alys, sitting beside Ragnar, crossed her arms. Her long black hair shimmered under the sunlight, and her ocean-blue eyes narrowed in disbelief. "You oversleep a lot for someone trying to be a hero."

Yuuki laughed nervously. "Hero? Nah, I just wanna survive this school."

That made the group chuckle — even Alys cracked a small smile.

From that day on, Yuuki started tagging along. At first, he was clumsy during training — always tripping, missing mana focus exercises, or accidentally triggering magic flares that nearly burned Light's eyebrows off.

But he never gave up. Ragnar admired that.

Magna would give him pointers on focus, Alys corrected his form with tough love, and Light, well, Light mostly teased him — but even that kept Yuuki going.

Over time, their bond grew strong.

One afternoon, after finishing their combat drills, the five sat together under the same courtyard tree, drenched in sweat but laughing.

Light tossed a pebble into the fountain nearby. "You know, we're not half bad as a team."

"Yeah," Yuuki agreed, smiling. "I still mess up, though."

"Not as much as you used to," Magna said. "You're improving."

Ragnar nodded. "If we keep this up, we might actually be ready for the mid-year evaluations."

Alys smirked. "We'll do more than that. We'll stand out."

That was the moment it began — a rumor spreading around the school. Five first-years who trained together, fought together, and were always seen together.

The teachers called them The Saint Class Five.

The students gave them a better name.

The Five Saints.

Named after Saint High Academy itself.

---

Two Months Later

The academy's grand training arena was packed. The Mock Battle Event — a tradition where younger students sparred against older years — was about to begin.

The first-years were expected to challenge the fourth years. Most teams chose easier matchups, aiming to just survive. But one team... had chosen the most dangerous option possible.

The Student Council.

The crowd couldn't stop whispering.

"Wait, are they serious?"

"They challenged the Council? That's suicide."

"It's gotta be Alys' idea. She's crazy."

They were right.

Inside the prep room, Ragnar leaned against the wall with arms crossed. "I told you this was a bad idea."

Light was pacing, visibly nervous. "Yeah, we're literally gonna die. The Council's vice president alone could solo us."

Magna sighed. "It's not too late to withdraw. The match hasn't started yet."

But Alys stood proudly, her long black hair flowing as she tightened her gloves. Her ocean-blue eyes burned with determination.

"Withdraw? From them? Never."

Yuuki, sitting on a bench lacing his boots, looked between them nervously. "Um… do we even have a plan?"

Ragnar gave him a deadpan look. "Alys's pride is the plan."

"Hey!" Alys snapped. "I won't let the Council look down on us just because we're first-years. We've trained hard for two months — we're stronger now!"

Light sighed dramatically. "She says that now, but when the president drops a meteor on us, I'm blaming you, Alys."

Alys smiled confidently. "Then you better dodge fast, Light."

Ragnar pushed off the wall, his expression calm but sharp. "Fine. We'll do it your way. But if we're going down... we're going down swinging."

Yuuki clenched his fists, determination lighting his face. "Let's give it everything we've got."

Magna nodded. "Then it's settled."

The announcement echoed through the arena:

> "Next up—Saint High first-year team, The Five Saints, versus the Student Council!"

The crowd roared as they walked out into the sunlight, the air thick with tension.

Light smirked, glancing at the others. "Guess it's time to make history."

Alys raised her hand, blue mana swirling around her fingertips. "No... it's time we show them what the Five Saints can do."
