Chapter 2 - My roommate

As soon as I started to smell a horrible scent. I did not bother to knock on the door. I barged into the room, dropping all my luggages and bags.

There was a fire in the middle of the kitchen. I saw a girl, trying to put out the fire with water. I rushed to push the girl out of the way, finding a fire extinguisher nearby.

I used it to put out the fire. The fire blew out as the black smoke raised, setting off the fire alarm.

The sprinkler system went off, making everything all wet. The girl laughed in embarrassment, "Thanks for helping me."

I nodded, "No problem. What were you even trying to make?"

She put her hand behind her neck awkwardly, "Pancakes..?"

My jaw dropped, "You set fire in the kitchen for some pancakes?"

She replied innocently, "No, I did not. I have just created a masterpiece."

I stared at the frying pan, seeing the burnt pancakes and charcoal texture. I shook my head in disapproval.

She introduced herself, "Anyway, my name is Flora. You must be my new roommate!!"

Her short light strawberry blonde hair matched with her golden eyes. She looked like a cartoon character. She was an extroverted and outgoing girl.

Her outfit was a simple jeans and a white cropped shirt. She looked like an average girl.

I nodded at the statement. "Yes, I guess we will be staying together. I'm Sylia."

Flora smiled, "I'm guessing you aren't Italian, right?"

I looked at her confused, "Why do you ask?"

She chuckled, "Your appearance is not similar here."

I looked at myself. I was wearing a white bottom shirt underneath with a black and white cotton vest. My black pants were baggy and big, plus a sliver chain hanging on the edge of the pants connected to the othet area. I had gold accessories with an apple watch on my left wrist.

She looked at my face, "You don't look Italian, but your name is Latin."

I laughed, "My ancestors were Asian. So that might explain it."

She raised an eyebrow, "Ohhhh which one? I'll love to know about my new roommate!"

"Well, part from my mom's side was Vietnamese and my dad's side was chinese. I was born in America." I explained.

Her eyes lit up, "oh my god, you must have been bullied throughout your childhood."

I questioned Flora's statement, "Is that what you were thinking?"

Flora put her right hand behind her back , indicating an awkward expression. "Well… that is what I have seen in movie genre."

I looked at her bold honesty. It wad kind of surprising for a change, but I did not mind it.

The majority of people believed stereotype in movies. Hollywood was best to normalize stereotypes, plus more than half of the population watched it.

Forr instance: Asians were known for their math skills and most short blonde haired middle aged ladies were normalized as karens.

Flora interrupted my thought as she asked if I could help her with cleaning up the kitchen.

I looked at the burnt and messy counter. "I guess I can help you. I have nothing to do yet."

Flora laughed loudly, "Oh my gosh, you're the best roommate I ever had!!"

While we were cleaning up the kitchen, she kept talking over and over again.

"Did you know that pancake is a form of a cake but just in a pan?!"

I looked at her statement as Flora looked enthusiastic, explaining.

"It has the same ingredients of cake which are flour, eggs, milk, sugar, salt, butter, and etc. Y'know what I'm saying, right?"

I nodded, "For someone who burnt simple pancake, you sure have a interest in them."

She was embarrassed, but she laughed it off. "Alright, alright!! You are quite… umm"

"Honest?" I suggested a word.

"No, I would have said 'blunt'." She replied.

I looked at her with no expression, raising my right eyebrown.

She laughed, "Black eyes. black hair. Blunt. You have a unique combo. What else is there? Mysterious?"

I rolled my eyes as I sarcastically said, "Wow. Tell me about it."

"So Sylia, what are you studying?" She asked out of the bloom.

We were finishing up with the cleaning as I put away the cleaned dishes. I thought before answering, "Medicine."

She laughed, "Damm, now you are Asian over Asian! Did your parents tell you to choose it?"

I shook my head, "No, I've just thought that It's an interesting idea."

She froze, but a smile appeared from her face. "Well, you're quite the something."

I looked at her, "What is your major?"

She laughed, "It's not obvious? I'm a fashion designer!!"

I looked at her plain clothes, "Yeah, I thought fashion designers are supposed to overdress."

She laughed again but harder this time, "Gurl, I ain't putting on my best clothes while I cook… well if I actually know how to cook."

"So you're telling me that you can't cook?" I blinked multiple times in shocked.

"Duh, I order delivery, but I saw a simple recipe online. I decided that I should try it out." She said with a hint of sass.

"Well Flora… step 1 to good pancake is. YOU NEEDA KNOW HOW TO COOK!!!" I exploded on her.

She looked surprised at my outburst, "I thought you'd have been more calm."

"Enough of your pancake accident, does the dorm have two bedrooms?" I asked, because it was my first time, having a roommate. It was also my first time that I lived in a dorm. Back at America, I had just lived with my parents.

Flora showed me to the bedrooms. "I have already claimed my room. You can have the other one."

I thanked her before I went to my own room. It was a blanked canvas for me.

"Perfect for decorating, ain't it?" I thought.

I organized my wardrobe first. I realized that I barely had any dresses or skirts. Most of the colors were black and white.

At the vanity, I put all my perfume, lipglosses, lipsticks and skincare. When I noticed a shelf, I decided to move it next to the desk. I filled the shelf with my stuff; books, mangas, novels, figures, collection and K-pop or other items.

My room was filled with poster of my favorite idols, movies and music. After hours, my room was no longer boring and bland.

"Aha! Finally, I'm done. I really need some snacks-" I checked the clock to see it was already night.

"Girl, I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!" I dropped on the bed and fainted out of frustration.
