Chapter 67 - Chapter 66: My Tears Ricochet

Maki couldn't even describe what was happening right now. No, he couldn't because his eyes aren't fast enough to catch the direction Maddox's sword was swinging. None of them could. Except for Maia, Magnus and Makoto.

For each blow that Maddox releases, each swing from his sword, the three only defend and try to disarm him.

But how could you even disarm a person whose weapon was made of aura? Maki realizes this and the answer came so suddenly to him. They can't unless they kill Maddox.

"Ate, they'll kill each other."

He alarmingly told Maddin who could only watch with her face contorting into anger.

"My charm doesn't work on them. Stupid gift. I think it only works on other people but not on you guys"

"I can't get through them, I might only be a nuisance rather than a help"

Damian stated who still has his gun ready to shoot just in case. But he was right, with how the three are fighting there was no way they could help.

While Magnus focused on defending, both Makoto and Maia tried attacking Maddox. Every attack they threw however bounces right back at them as if it was ricocheting making Maddox have the upper hand even if it was three against one.

He expertly blocked Makoto and Maia's knives which was fast enough that he knew if he didn't have his gift used he would have been slashed to death.

But that knowledge was the only fuel to his anger. The fact that his younger siblings were adamant on attacking him, never relenting even for a second was all the confirmation he needed to know that Maia was indeed a murderer.

That anger was all he needed as he once again parried with Makoto and Maia. This time he kicked Makoto in the abdomen to send him flying out of his sight before his sword clashed once more to Maia's knife.

Maddox was twice Maia's size and yet he can't seem to push Maia and overpower her completely. He gritted his teeth and stared at her younger sister's ruby eyes.

Maia flinched when she saw the disgust in Maddox's eyes.

"Must be fun to become a mutant huh? You instantly get the power and strength that normal humans want"

It was then that Maia knew her brother, never saw her as Maia, their sister. What he saw from the very first moment was Maia - the mutant - and their mother's murderer.

That slight hesitation didn't escape Maddox's eyes as he pushed Maia and swung his sword again. But Magnus was faster, his large arms immediately wrapping around Maddox's forearm as he crushed his hands tight making the sword disappear.

He grimaced when he felt the hot aura dissipate in his hands but he didn't let go.

"LET GO!!"

Maddox shouted but Makoto was already on his feet as he shielded Maia and placed a knife right at Maddox's neck.

"Enough Maddox. This is enough"

Magnus calmly muttered but the tone in his voice had enough warning to let his siblings know that he wasn't calm at all.

"You're protecting her. All of you. And Makoto? You almost shot her to death and now you're protecting her."

Makoto only spared a glance at his sister. At Maia who wasn't even moving, her eyes were too glossy, as if on the verge of crying and breaking down. And that's when he knew that his sister was in pain.

"That shot was a warning. To fend off the doomed future that will befall in all of us. But I do not want nor do I wish for her death right in front of my eyes"

"Is that so–"

Maddox replied, sneering.

"Then you don't mind if I kill her out of your sight"

Magnus almost yelped at the pain shooting out from his palm that was holding Maddox's hand but he didn't let go. Maddox was trying to recreate his sword once more and Magnus wouldn't let that happen.

"Maddox enough. This is madness, you need to stop"

Maddin called out to which Maddox whipped his head towards his twin sister as Damian stood in front of her and Maki.

"Madness? You're all the mad one here!! She killed our mother!! She killed the person who gave her life and yet you're calling me the mad one!? You're all the mad one for ever forgiving this little shit here for what she had done"

Maia wanted to say something, to tell Maddox that she didn't like what she did but the words won't pour out. Even her tears won't fall, it was as if there was a glass containing them preventing them from falling out from her eyes completely.

Because while there was a part of her that felt guilt over the death of Artemis, there was also a part of her that knew if the same thing had happened once more, she would've done it all over again.

She would've killed Artemis again if it meant living. That's why she can't fully regret what she has done. Because at the end of it all, it was either her or Artemis who would've lived.

And if she had died that day then she knew that everyone in the Pentagon would've ended up dead just so she could have Maki. And her? Her body would've operated without a soul.

That was why she can't regret it. Not even now that Maddox was completely adamant on killing her. So she stood her ground and readied herself because she knew Maddox wasn't done. And Makoto had seen exactly what he would do with his foresight.

"KUYA LET GO OF HIS HANDS!"

Makoto shouted just enough for Magnus to let go before the hot citrine yellow aura bursted out of Maddox's whole body. The aura was so hot it burnt the very grass that Maddox was standing on. He fixed his gaze towards Maia who was being protected by Makoto who had his knife readied.

Then his gaze went towards Maddin then to Maki and finally towards Damian who still had a gun pointed right at his direction.

"I'll let you suffer the same pain I went through you mutant"

He rumbled before his feet dashed towards Damian. And before everyone could react, his sword was already piercing the younger lad's body and all that could be heard of was Maia's deafening scream before a golden yellow aura trapped every last one of them inside a barrier.
