Chapter 42 - Too Late to Save Her

The silence stretched between them like a taut wire, ready to snap. Damien stood in the center of the circle, his silver eyes reflecting the candlelight with an otherworldly gleam.

Selene forced herself to stand straighter, to meet his gaze without flinching. She had summoned him for a reason, and she wouldn't let fear stop her from getting what she needed.

"I want to know where Lucian is," she said, her voice steadier than she felt.

Damien's expression almost snapped into something darker, but then his smile widened as he drank in her angry expression, revealing teeth that were just a little too sharp. "Straight to the point. I like that." He took another step toward the edge of the circle, and Selene noticed that the salt lines began to smoke and hiss where his feet approached them, as if his very presence was corrosive. "Tell me, what did you discover that has you so... upset?" The words dripped with knowing satisfaction, like he'd been waiting for this moment.
