Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

Rowton was completely unaware that he had narrowly escaped death. While the news of his recent monetary reward and promotion had made him feel both proud and relieved, the darker side of the matter still loomed over him. In his mind, the ledger incident was a distant worry, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.

He had come home with Rs 21,000, a significant sum for his family. His parents, particularly his mother, were thrilled about the promotion and the money. For her, it was more about his career advancement, a source of pride in the neighborhood. Rowton explained that his contribution was crucial, securing both the rupee reward and a promotion to a first-level officer, something he had long hoped for. His younger brother Amit, however, seemed more curious about the nature of Rowton's work, but Rowton didn't elaborate.

Despite the happiness at home, Rowton couldn't let go of his concerns. He had overheard hints from Hara about the potential danger he might be in. While Rowton was certain that Hara hadn't seen him looking at the ledger, he couldn't help but feel uneasy. If the higher-ups, like Rajiti, suspected him of even thinking about the contents, it would only take a little doubt to justify silencing him. The authorities could crush him like an ant if they chose to.

Back in his small home, Rowton considered his options. Should he run? Would that make the situation worse? After a few days of constant vigilance, he realized that he hadn't been targeted yet. It was either a sign that Rajiti hadn't decided to act, or that he was biding his time. Rowton's mind raced, and he began to wonder what the next move would be.

The next shock came when Rowton received his promotion order. As of now, he was a first-level police officer, outranking dozens of second-level officers. His happiness was twofold. The promotion felt like a step toward a better future, but he also discovered two more unusual developments: his body had become inexplicably stronger, and his memory had sharpened to an extraordinary degree.

Rowton wasn't sure what had caused this change, but he realized his physical strength had far surpassed that of a normal person. He had tested himself after helping the Black Lion Gang boss, and the results were undeniable. Rowton found himself gaining more strength with each passing day. This newfound power could make him a force to be reckoned with, and it was proving useful in his line of work. His fighting skills were improving too, a welcome change from his previous life.

The second surprise was his mind. Rowton's memory was now almost photographic. He could glance at a book, absorb its contents, and retain them flawlessly. His ability to memorize information became apparent when he remembered everything in the Minister of Finance's ledger without difficulty. Rowton was able to flip through a 50-page book, committing it to memory in less than a minute.

While Rowton didn't fully understand the cause behind these changes, he chalked them up to being the perks of someone who had "traversed" from another life. Whether it was supernatural or simply a result of his situation, Rowton was determined to use these advantages to his benefit. With his newfound physical abilities and enhanced memory, his position as a police officer would become safer.

More importantly, Rowton was preparing for the actions of Rajiti. His enhanced fighting ability would certainly improve his chances of surviving any future confrontations. However, as he grew more vigilant over the next few days, he saw no immediate signs of danger. Rajiti had yet to act on the ledger, and Rowton was beginning to think he might be safe.

Nevertheless, Rowton couldn't afford to be complacent. He had spent enough time in India in his previous life to know that danger could strike at any moment. People here were quick to eliminate threats, especially those at the top. But Rowton had an advantage — he wasn't just a low-ranking police officer anymore. He had to use his status to his advantage, becoming a public figure to gain more influence. This would make it more difficult for Rajiti or anyone else to act against him without facing backlash.

Rowton's memory, once a mere curiosity, was now a powerful tool. It gave him confidence for the upcoming civil service exams he planned to take. With his physical prowess and enhanced intellect, he felt ready to face whatever came his way.

Still, Rowton couldn't shake the feeling that the storm was far from over. He remained alert, knowing that the path ahead would be fraught with danger.
