Nyx froze for a moment, then laughed, "And you said you weren't waiting for me."
With a slight leap, he jumped right onto the couch and stretched lazily, his tone casual and matter-of-fact, "Well, since you're so sincere, I'll grudgingly take a bite."
Ellis stood up and walked towards the kitchen.
Nyx's gaze followed his figure, the corners of his lips lifting into a pleasant curve.See, humans didn't need compulsion after all to naturally plug another into their world.
Ellis had gotten used to him being around. And that habit would eventually turn into some sort of deeper bond.
Nyx's presence was like a subtle ripple that broke the austere atmosphere of the academy.
At first, the people in the academy were curious and wary of this contracted demon. They had seen all sorts of magical creatures, but a demon like Nyx - a demon with a noble status, stunning appearance, and arbitrary behavior - was rare. What's more, his indentured servant was the most calm and rational tutor in the academy - Ellis.
But after a long time, everyone realized one thing - Nix seemed ... not as scary as they thought.
Of course, he was still a demon, and occasionally he would play a few pranks to give some unlucky apprentices a taste of his "demonic sense of humor".But more often than not, he just lazily appeared in all corners of the academy, leisurely observing the human world, with a casual and flirtatious smile, wilfully inserting himself into other people's conversations, and occasionally causing some interesting things.
One day, a sudden exclamation came from the greenhouse of the magic botany class.
"Who put the 'proximity to all things' magic on the Magic Control Vine? This thing won't let go when it wraps itself around people!"A student shouted as he tried to break free from the vines that were wrapped around him.
Nyx stood watching the fun with his arms wrapped around him with interest, commenting leisurely, "That's quite a loving scene."
Ellis glanced at him faintly and said unflinchingly, "Take your magic back."
Nyx spread his hands, "Geez, I just wanted to see if the Magic Controlling Vine could evolve into a higher level of interactive ability."
Ellis' tone was calm, "Then try it yourself?"
Nyx decisively withdrew his magic, "Forget it, let's leave the academic research to you boring humans."
The apprentices of the academy were already not surprised by this.
He was the brightest presence in the academy, but also the most "grounded".
Whether he was lounging around in the classroom, sneaking around the cafeteria and picking the most exquisite food off Ellis' plate when he wasn't looking, or casually pointing out the research of the apprentices in the magic lab - "The runes of this magic formation are missing a stroke, huh? What outdated textbook did you follow?"-- Nyx always made a difference in the academy's daily routine.
The most crucial thing was - he was the only one who could "humanize" Ellis' mentor.
Everyone knew that Ellis was always calm and reticent, polite but distant, and the students were far more in awe of him than close to him.
But as long as Nyx was present, the situation was completely different.
"Mentor, mind him!"
An apprentice cried, pointing at Nyx, "He cast a morphing spell on my crystal ball, and now it will roll around on its own and bump into people!"
Ellis rubbed the corner of his forehead and looked at Nyx, who was leaning against the window with his arms wrapped around him and his face full of innocence."Explain?"
Nyx shrugged his shoulders, "I just thought it was too boring to add some 'personality' to it."
Ellis trailed off, "Restore it to its original state."
Nyx blinked, sighed, and casually snapped his fingers as the crystal ball finally came to an honest rest on the ground.
The student breathed a sigh of relief, but still complained unwillingly, "Mentor, he does this every time!"
Ellis gently tapped the desktop, his tone not light or heavy, "Next time something like this happens, go to the bookstore and help me organize the information for a week."
Nyx sniffed and immediately changed into a good-natured smile, "Got it."
