c146: Carlo's Starters vs. Kanto Starters!!
"Pii-ii!!" Clefairy soared backward with light, nimble footwork, leaping clear of Squirtle's aggressive advance. In midair, she glowed briefly as Copycat activated replicating Squirtle's Water Gun with precise timing.
With a focused puff of breath, Clefairy's mouth widened, and a forceful stream of water—thick as a Machop's forearm blasted forth with stunning speed and accuracy.
"Charmander, dodge quick!!" Keisuke shouted urgently, watching the water blast pierce through the lingering haze of Smokescreen like a javelin launched by a pro. The move cut through the gray fog, scattering embers and smoke particles in all directions as it hurtled toward its target.
"Squirtle, Rapid Spin go for Clefairy!" Okazaki barked.
But Squirtle never got the chance.
"Quick Attack, Froakie!" Ash's voice rang out like a trigger.
From behind the Smokescreen, Froakie shot forward in a blur of speed, its form nearly indistinguishable as it slammed into Squirtle's side with full momentum. Squirtle's eyes widened just before impact then the collision sent him spinning through the air.
"Pfsshh bam!" At nearly the same moment, Charmander his focus still on Froakie's prior movements was blindsided by Clefairy's copied Water Gun. Despite Keisuke's warning, the blast struck squarely in the chest. Though it wasn't a critical hit, the elemental disadvantage was undeniable. Fire lost to Water.
Charmander yelped in pain and tumbled onto the field, smoke rising from his soaked scales as he hit the ground.
With both Kanto starters reeling Squirtle airborne, Charmander staggered the momentum shifted dramatically. The chaotic flurry of dodges, smokescreen covers, and counters had resolved into a clear picture: Ash and Serena were firmly in control.
Okazaki and Keisuke, who had started the match aggressively with focused fire on Clefairy, now found themselves on the defensive.
The students watching from the sidelines, many of whom had silently rooted for an upset, couldn't help but exchange glances of resignation.
"It's not looking good for them..." someone muttered.
Outside the ring, Professor Oak watched quietly, arms crossed, eyes narrowed in analytical interest. He'd seen this kind of synergy before from Champions in the making.
On the battlefield, Serena stood tall, her posture steady, her eyes sharp with focus. Under Ash's tutelage, she had rapidly grown not only in skill, but in confidence. Now, in the heat of battle, she mirrored Ash's calm and analytical mindset perfectly.
"Clefairy, Disarming Voice target Squirtle!" she called without hesitation.
Clefairy's eyes sparkled, and a harmonic pulse of soundwaves burst forth, shimmering pink as it expanded outward in an arcing wave toward the battered Water-type.
Froakie, meanwhile, recovered from its earlier strike. Serena's prediction had been right Froakie could finish Charmander more easily, while Clefairy could handle Squirtle. The elemental matchups weren't in Okazaki and Keisuke's favor anymore.
"Froakie, use Bubble! Aim for Charmander!" Ash followed up with a crisp order.
At the same moment, a gust of wind swept down from the forest surrounding the campgrounds, scattering the remnants of Smokescreen. The battlefield cleared Charmander, crouched low and panting, was now fully exposed.
"Pfft-pfft-pfft!!" Froakie inhaled deeply, cheeks ballooning, and then fired a barrage of tightly packed bubbles. Each bubble shone like crystal, the compressed water spheres zipping through the air and curving in mid-flight as Froakie adjusted for range.
Squirtle ← (Disarming Voice) — Clefairy
Charmander ← (Bubble) — Froakie
"Squirtle, move!" Okazaki called, sweat glistening at his temple.
"Charmander, dodge!!" Keisuke shouted, urgency rising.
But it was too late. Both Disarming Voice and Bubble were area-of-effect moves, not pinpoint strikes. Their wide-angle trajectories made it significantly harder for the targets to evade, especially after just being hit.
The fans among the watching students gasped as the twin moves collided with their respective targets.
The situation had flipped completely. In the opening moments, Okazaki and Keisuke had the advantage with their coordinated ambush on Clefairy. But Ash and Serena adapted immediately Ash baited the aggression with Froakie's support role, while Serena made use of Copycat and cleverly shifted the battle tempo.
With Froakie and Clefairy now pressing the assault in sync, it was becoming clear why Ash and Serena remained undefeated.
What's more, Squirtle and Charmander had just taken direct hits, and Ash and Serena timed their follow-up attacks perfectly cutting off any window for Okazaki and Keisuke's Pokémon to counter or even reposition themselves.
"Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!"
"Waaaah!!" Froakie's Bubble attack was rapid and expertly executed. The Greninja-in-training had long since mastered precise control of Bubble, both in spacing and pacing. His speed was superior, and his aim was impeccable. The glossy water orbs struck Charmander first, forcing it to stagger back with each pop, each burst knocking it further off-balance. Charmander let out a sharp cry as the bubbles exploded across its scales, soaking its flame-tipped tail and further weakening its stance.
"Jenny?!" Startled and unable to retreat in time, Squirtle instinctively curled into its shell a defensive maneuver rooted in its species' natural instincts.
Normally, Squirtle's shell is an exceptional barrier. Against most physical or even basic elemental attacks, it provides superb resistance both physical and special. In earlier matches during the Summer Camp Challenge, Squirtle had used the shell effectively to deflect Growlithe's Tackle and nullify a Confusion from Abra.
However, this time, the tactic backfired.
Clefairy's Disarming Voice was a sound-based Fairy-type move, not a direct hit or physical strike. The move didn't rely on penetrating the exterior it resonated through sound, and Squirtle's hollow shell, tightly enclosed, acted like an echo chamber.
Rather than blocking it, the shell amplified the voice.
"Pii-yii~!"
"Jenny!!" Squirtle's internal world was suddenly flooded with vibrating waves of song. It wasn't painful Disarming Voice wasn't about raw damage it was psychological and spiritual, charming the opponent with melody. Inside that cramped space, the notes bounced and multiplied, bombarding Squirtle from every angle. The sensation was like being massaged by warm wind and pink light—completely disarming, literally.
When Squirtle finally emerged, his eyes were wide and glassy tinted pink with sparkling hearts swirling within, completely infatuated.
Okazaki: "Squirtle!!"
Keisuke: "Charmander!!"
Ash seized the moment instantly. "Froakie, don't let up! Keep up the Bubble focus on Charmander!"
Serena, completely in sync with her partner, didn't miss a beat. "Clefairy, use Disarming Voice! Target Charmander this time!"
With Squirtle dazed and passive, Serena quickly changed targets. The plan was now crystal clear: knock out Charmander first, then clean up Squirtle.
It was a perfect read and Serena's call was timed flawlessly.
"Puff! Puff! Puff!"
"Pii-yii! Pii-yii!"
From opposite angles, the shimmering water bubbles and glimmering pink soundwaves raced toward Charmander like a pincer attack one from Froakie, the other from Clefairy.
Okazaki: "Squirtle! Snap out of it use Smelling Salts! You need to move!!"
Keisuke: "Charmander! Ember! Counterattack—now!!"
Charmander, struggling to its feet after Froakie's last barrage, gritted his teeth. He opened his mouth and let out a sputtering flame not a full-powered Ember, but enough to shoot sparks through the air.
But there was a problem.
Charmander was facing two attackers, from two angles, and his field of view was split. One brain two threats. Froakie on the right, Clefairy on the left. His movements froze for a split-second as he hesitated: who to hit first?
That one second of hesitation that pause was all it took.
The Ember flickered into the air and missed both opponents.
By then, it was already too late.
The dual fan-shaped attacks Froakie's Bubble and Clefairy's Disarming Voice—collided with Charmander simultaneously.
"BOOM!!"
"BOOM!!"
The sound echoed across the training field as Charmander was blasted backwards. He skidded across the dirt in a cloud of dust, eyes spiraling, limbs twitching.
This time, the little orange dinosaur didn't bounce back up like before. The combo hit—one special, one magical was just too much.
Clefairy (Level 10) and Froakie (Level 16) had combined their strengths strategically. Their synergy, enhanced by constant training during Ash's earlier camp sessions, now delivered a result too decisive to ignore.
Charmander was out.
[DING! Congratulations, Host. Defeated Level 9 Charmander. +130 EXP.]
