The next day passed much like the last.
Cold corridors. Closed doors, gentle apologies.
I visited the prince's quarters early in the morning, again, eager despite yesterday's disappointment, but his butler stood at the threshold, bowing low with the same polite regret in his voice.
"You highness," he said softly, "I regret to inform you that his highness is still occupied and will not be able to receive any visitors today."
His tone was careful, respectful, but the lines of unease near his eyes had not been there before. I nodded, offering the same smile I had the day before, though this time it did not reach my eyes.
"I see, thank you for letting me know."
I turned away without another word.
After that, I made my way to the emperor's office. Perhaps… just perhaps today would be different, but the moment I reach the towering doors, the guards stepped forward and bowed, blocking my path as they had yesterday.
