Chapter 12 - Chapter 12:

At the end of the tapestry corridor, Laura, Ethan, and Marty arrived at a large, circular room. The room was illuminated by a soft, golden light that seemed to emanate from the walls themselves, which were made of a smooth, shiny stone. In the center of the room, on a white marble pedestal , rested an object that immediately caught their attention : a small, plain chest , made of dark wood and unadorned.

The chest had no lock or visible hinges. It simply sat there , emanating an aura of mystery and antiquity . Despite its modest appearance, the three friends felt a strange sense of importance and power emanating from the object.

" What is that ?" he whispered . Marty , his eyes fixed on the chest. " Is ... is it Greed's treasure?"

Ethan approached the pedestal cautiously, examining the chest closely . "It could be ," Ethan replied quietly . "But it doesn't look like typical treasure . There are no jewels, no gold, nothing shiny."

Laura joined Ethan in front of the pedestal, feeling a mixture of curiosity and apprehension . "I feel something... something different emanating from it ," Laura said thoughtfully. "It's not the same obsessive greed from the Hall of Mirrors. It's... calmer , deeper . Like... like a test."

Suddenly, a voice echoed in the room, deep and melodious, though lacking in warmth or emotion . It was Greed's voice, but it sounded different from the sadistic, venomous voice they had heard before. This voice was more impersonal , almost mechanical , as if it were a preset recording .

"You have reached the end of your journey," the voice said. "You have resisted the temptations of the mirror maze and have shown a certain resilience against greed. Now you face the final test. Before you lies the true treasure of this place. A treasure that can grant you your greatest wishes, beyond your imagination . "

The voice paused, creating an expectant silence in the room. Then it continued , its tone slightly more insistent . "Open the chest. Take the treasure. Satisfy your deepest greed . It is yours by right. You have earned it . "

Marty took a step toward the chest, his eyes shining with anticipation . " Did you hear him? He said it's ours. That he can grant us our greatest wishes. We have to open it, Laura, Ethan. We have to see what 's inside."

Ethan hesitated , eyeing the chest uncertainly. "I don't know , Marty . It sounds too easy . What if it's a trap? What if Greed is trying to tempt us one last time?"

Laura stood thoughtfully , staring at the wooden chest. She could feel the subtle but powerful attraction emanating from it , the promise of fulfilling hidden desires, of obtaining something valuable and desirable. But she also felt a twinge of caution , an intuition that this "treasure" was not what it seemed .

He remembered Greed's words in the Hall of Mirrors, his insistence that avarice was inevitable, that it was in every heart. Could it be that this final test was precisely that, one last chance to succumb to greed, even after having resisted so many temptations?

took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a moment, concentrating on the generous light he had found in his reflection. He remembered the lesson he had learned in the salon : that true strength lies not in greed, but in generosity and selfless kindness. And he knew he couldn't be fooled by the empty promise of this "treasure."

She opened her eyes and looked at Ethan and Marty with determination . "We're not going to open the chest," Laura said, her voice firm.

Marty looked at her in disbelief. " What ? But ... why not ? It could be amazing what 's inside. We could be rich, famous, have everything we've ever wanted. "

Laura shook her head. "No, Marty . That's not the real treasure. The real treasure isn't in that chest. It's somewhere else."

Ethan frowned , but seemed to understand what Laura was implying. " You mean... the test isn't taking the treasure, but... refusing it? " Ethan asked .

Laura nodded . "I think so . Greed is offering us what it thinks we most desire, trying to tempt us one last time. But the true escape from this labyrinth lies not in greed, but in generosity. We have to prove that we've learned our lesson , that we've overcome greed."

Marty hesitated , staring at the chest longingly, but then looked back at Laura and Ethan, seeing the conviction on their faces. He sighed , still with a hint of doubt in his eyes. "I guess... I guess you're right , " Marty said quietly. "But... then what do we do? Do we just walk away? Leave the chest unopened?"

Laura smiled softly . "Not exactly, Marty . We're leaving the chest, yes . But we're not leaving empty-handed . We're taking the real treasure we found here . "

Laura approached the pedestal and, instead of opening the chest, placed her hand on it , radiating her generosity, her selfless kindness, her rejection of greed. Ethan and Marty joined her, also placing their hands on the chest, sharing her support and determination .

At that instant, the golden light in the room intensified , flooding the space with a warm, vibrant energy . Greed 's voice echoed again, but this time it didn't sound mechanical or impersonal. There was a different nuance to his tone, a kind of... recognition, perhaps even a hint of respect.

"You have chosen wisely," said the voice, now softer and more resonant. "You have understood that true treasure lies not in material possession , but in virtue and generosity. You have passed the final test. You have conquered avarice."

The golden light grew even more intense, enveloping Laura, Ethan, and Marty in a warm, luminous embrace . They felt a sense of lightness and liberation , as if a great weight had been lifted from their shoulders. And as the light began to fade , they realized the circular room was no longer around them.

Instead of the shining stone walls and the mysterious chest, they found themselves back in the foyer of the old mansion , facing the front door—the same door through which they had entered the mirror maze. The door stood wide open, revealing the sunlight outside, the fresh, clean air, and the real world waiting beyond .

They had escaped. They had defeated Greed. And they had done so not by giving in to greed, but by embracing generosity and kindness. They had left the mansion without gold or material riches, but they had taken with them something far more valuable : a lesson learned , a friendship strengthened, and the understanding that true treasure lies in a generous heart and selfless actions.

Together, Laura, Ethan, and Marty crossed the threshold of the door, leaving the mansion and the maze of mirrors behind , entering the real world again, forever changed by their adventure, ready to face the future with courage and generosity, always remembering the valuable lesson they had learned in the kingdom of greed.
