The air in my office was still, and for a while, I just sat there, breathing it in. The night outside stretched endlessly, calm and quiet. Yet, inside me, there was a hum, not anxiety, not stress.

I leaned forward slowly, resting my elbows on the desk and running my hands down my face. I wasn't tired, not in the usual sense. My body was worn, sure, long day, long week. But my mind was alive, pacing back and forth like it had something urgent to say but couldn't quite put it into words.

I never thought it would be like this with her.

I didn't plan to care. Not the way I was starting to. I had boundaries, lines, and I was careful with them. Being a doctor, especially to a patient like Mia, a woman recovering from something so traumatic, meant I had responsibilities. But everything changed when I started taking notes of little things about her when she was in a coma.
