Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 — Two Lights in the Dark

Chapter 23 — Two Lights in the Dark

The forest beyond Luminel's hidden domain felt older than the one they had left behind. The difference was difficult to explain, because the trees were still trees and the moon remained the same pale moon that had followed them through the mist, yet everything beyond the boundary seemed to carry more weight. Ancient trunks rose like pillars around Renji and Shun, their branches tangling high overhead until only scraps of silver light reached the ground. Alex kept close to Renji's leg, ears twitching at every rustle, while Tesla periodically buzzed ahead before returning whenever Shun's Resonance Linker detected movement. Shun himself scarcely looked up from the small map projected above his device, where the sonar function he had spent the last two weeks refining painted nearby Aetherkin as faint red points.

"Left," he whispered.

Renji changed direction immediately.

Shun followed, eyes still on the display. "There's a cluster about two hundred metres east. Probably sleeping. Another one northwest, moving slowly. If we keep this route, we shouldn't cross either."

Renji glanced toward him. "You're getting good at that."

"I adjusted the pulse interval and reduced the range so the forest wouldn't distort the return signal. Luminel's domain interferes with—"

"Shun."

Shun looked up.

"I meant it as a compliment."

"Oh."

Renji smiled faintly and kept walking.

They had gone perhaps another fifteen minutes when the signal from both Linkers suddenly intensified. Shun stopped so quickly Tesla nearly flew into the back of his head, and Renji turned at once as the blue light from his own device began pulsing strongly enough to illuminate his hand.

"Close," Shun said.

Renji could feel that without being told.

The pull had become almost physical now.

They pushed through a wall of tangled vines and found an old circular well half-swallowed by the forest. Its stone rim was cracked and thick with moss, roots had grown between the masonry, and several stones leaned at such alarming angles that Daichi would almost certainly have forbidden anyone from touching it.

Renji approached anyway.

"A well?"

Shun crouched beside the rim and aimed his Linker downward. The sonar pulse vanished into the darkness and returned in a mess of static. "There's definitely something below us. Two energy signatures, but the readings keep collapsing whenever I try to isolate them."

"Hostile?"

"No."

Renji leaned over.

At first he saw nothing.

Then something glimmered far below.

Not torchlight.

Two tiny points of colour hovered in the darkness like stars reflected at the bottom of an impossibly deep lake.

Renji's breath slowed.

"That's them."

Shun looked down beside him. "Both?"

Renji nodded.

One of the lights was orange-gold.

The other was blue.

The blue one pulled at him so strongly that his hand tightened around the stone rim without his noticing.

Renji opened his pack and drew out the rope they had brought. He looped it around one of the thicker roots that had grown through the ancient masonry, tested it twice, then handed the loose end toward Alex.

"Hold it."

Alex looked at the rope.

Then at Renji.

"Must I remind you that I am presently rather small?"

"Brace it around the tree."

"Ah. A plan possessing logic. How refreshing."

Renji rolled his eyes.

Shun helped secure the line while Tesla checked the darkness above them. Once Renji was satisfied, he activated the protective function Luminel had taught them. The Resonance Linker pulsed, and a thin translucent barrier settled around his body.

"Don't rush," Shun warned.

"I know."

"And if the structure shifts—"

"I know."

"If your Linker loses signal—"

"Shun."

Shun stopped.

Renji smiled slightly.

"I know."

Then he climbed down.

The moonlight disappeared quickly. Mossy stones slipped past him as he descended, the rope creaking softly beneath his weight while the glow below became steadily brighter. Cold damp air gathered around him, and by the time his boots finally touched the bottom, he landed ankle-deep in clear water.

The well was wider beneath the surface than it had appeared from above.

Renji raised his Linker.

Two Virtue Sigils floated just above the water.

The orange-gold one shimmered quietly.

The blue one pulsed.

Renji stopped breathing for a moment.

Friendship.

He knew.

There was no voice explaining it and no inscription declaring ownership. He simply knew in the same way he had known, lying awake in Luminel's domain, that something was calling him.

Renji stepped closer.

The Sigil brightened.

Friendship.

The word should have been easy.

It wasn't.

Yuto was easy.

Yuto was his younger brother. Renji's protectiveness toward him required no thought at all. If Yuto was in danger, Renji moved. If someone hurt him, Renji became angry. There was nothing complicated about family.

Friends were different.

Haruto irritated him.

Frequently.

Airi could be exhausting.

Shun occasionally disappeared so far inside his own thoughts that speaking to him felt like interrupting someone in another universe.

Daichi worried about everything.

Misaki worried about everyone.

And yet Renji remembered Haruto shoving him away from an attack without thinking, Misaki sitting beside him after a bad day without demanding he explain what was wrong, Daichi passing him food when Renji had been too tired to notice he was hungry, Airi saying exactly what she thought even when nobody particularly wanted to hear it, and Shun quietly repairing something that belonged to him simply because he had noticed it was broken. None of those things were dramatic, and perhaps that was the point. Renji had always been good at protecting people he had already allowed close. Actually allowing people close was harder.

He looked at the blue Sigil.

"Do I even deserve this?"

Its light reflected in the water.

Renji thought of Haruto: their arguments, their competition, the annoying certainty that if Renji fell in battle, Haruto would come back for him no matter how stupid doing so was. Renji had spent a great deal of time pretending that sort of certainty didn't matter.

The Sigil continued pulsing.

He slowly understood that Friendship wasn't asking whether he was perfect at it. It wasn't even asking whether he liked everyone equally. It was asking whether he was willing to let bonds matter.

Renji reached out.

His fingers touched the Sigil.

Blue light surged through the well.

Warmth ran from his hand into his chest so suddenly that he sucked in a breath. Images flickered through his thoughts, not visions forced into him but memories already his own: Yuto laughing; Alex walking beside him; Haruto arguing with him over some pointless competition; Shun sitting beside him only an hour earlier, both of them pretending neither was nervous about leaving the domain.

The light settled.

Renji stood very still.

"Renji?" Shun's voice echoed from above. "Are you all right?"

Renji looked upward.

A small smile appeared.

"I found it."

There was a pause.

"Your Sigil?"

Renji looked at the blue symbol glowing in his palm.

"Yeah."

He hesitated, then added more quietly, "I think I found something else too."

Shun wisely did not demand immediate clarification.

Renji fastened the Sigil securely near his Resonance Linker, then looked toward the orange-gold light still floating above the water.

"Yours is here."

"What?"

"Both were down here."

Shun's reply came immediately. "Don't leave it."

Renji raised an eyebrow even though Shun could not see him.

"Wasn't planning to."

He reached toward the second Sigil.

The moment his fingers closed around it, the light flashed warmly, almost inquisitively, as though recognizing that he was not the one it wanted but allowing itself to be carried anyway.

The stones beneath Renji's boots trembled.

He looked upward.

"Pull!"

Alex and Shun hauled the rope while Renji climbed as quickly as the wet stone allowed. He had nearly reached the rim when Shun's voice changed.

"Renji."

Something in the tone made him climb faster.

"What's wrong?"

Shun stared at his Linker.

Two red points had appeared at the edge of the sonar map.

They were moving quickly.

Very quickly.

"Two signatures."

Renji reached the top.

Alex helped drag him over the edge as Shun backed away from the well.

"How large?"

Shun swallowed.

"Large enough."

A distant tree cracked.

Both boys turned.

Another impact followed.

BOOM.

Then another.

BOOM.

Renji shoved Shun's Sigil into his hand.

"Yours."

Shun barely had time to look at it.

"Evolution. Now."

Alex stepped forward.

Tesla's wings spread.

The Resonance Linkers flared simultaneously.

Temporary evolution answered.

Alex vanished inside cold blue-white light, his small body expanding until Frostfang landed heavily in the clearing—a giant wolf with light-blue fur, a white underside, dark blue tiger stripes, magenta claws and dark-blue-tipped blades. His very curly tail snapped behind him as frost misted around his jaws.

Beside him, Tesla's body expanded within a storm of electricity, his Juvenile form rising into his much larger Adult-stage insectoid body, armour gleaming beneath the moonlight as electrical energy danced over his horn.

Renji climbed onto Frostfang's back.

Shun mounted Tesla's evolved form.

"Domain?" Renji asked.

"West. Four kilometres."

"Then move."

They launched into the trees.

For perhaps ten seconds, it appeared they might escape cleanly.

Then the forest behind them exploded.

A massive dark-scaled tyrannosaur smashed through the trees, huge jaws open and fire glowing inside its throat. The creature's heavy tail flattened shrubs behind it as each step tore chunks from the ground.

Shun looked over his shoulder.

"Dreadtyrant. Adult stage."

"Of course it is."

"Fast for its size."

"Less commentary."

"I'm giving useful information."

Ahead, something dropped from the canopy.

Frostfang skidded.

Tesla banked sideways.

A second creature landed between them and the path west.

Long black limbs unfolded beneath broad leathery wings. Four red eyes opened across its demonic face, glowing like burning coals, while a long tail ended in a clawed structure that flexed almost like another hand.

Shun's voice tightened.

"Demonwing."

Behind them, Dreadtyrant came crashing closer.

Renji's jaw clenched.

"One in front. One behind."

"They're moving too deliberately to be unrelated."

"Eidon?"

"Probably."

Demonwing's four eyes flared.

Renji's body froze.

His hands locked in Frostfang's fur.

For one horrible second his mind continued working perfectly while everything below his neck refused.

Shun made a strangled sound beside him.

"Eyes."

Renji could barely move his mouth.

"It's... holding us."

Behind them, Dreadtyrant roared.

Flame erupted.

"FROSTFANG!"

The giant wolf moved even though Renji could not.

He planted himself between Renji and the incoming inferno.

Fire crashed across his side.

His fur blackened at the edges.

He growled but remained standing.

Tesla's evolved form shook violently in the air as Shun forced words through clenched teeth.

"Override the response. Don't look at the eyes. Calculate movement."

Electrical energy surged around Tesla's armour.

His head turned away from Demonwing's gaze.

The paralysis weakened.

Shun sucked in a breath.

Renji's fingers twitched.

He forced his hand toward the Linker.

The blue Sigil of Friendship answered instantly.

"Power boost."

Energy surged into Frostfang.

Shun raised his own Linker, the newly recovered Sigil of Knowledge glowing in his hand even though it had not yet fully awakened.

"Focus support. Tesla, track by movement instead of sight."

The paralysis finally cracked.

Frostfang threw his head back and howled.

The sound rolled through the trees like thunder.

Tesla shot upward.

"Electro Shocker!"

Lightning tore from his horn toward Demonwing.

The black creature twisted through the air with unnatural grace, wings snapping sideways as the attack blasted apart a boulder behind it.

Demonwing opened its wings.

"Demonic Gale!"

Black wind exploded across the clearing.

Trees bent.

Branches ripped free.

Frostfang dug his magenta claws into the soil while Renji flattened himself against his back.

"Hold!"

Tesla fought the current above them.

Dreadtyrant advanced through the storm.

Renji saw the fire building again.

"Frostfang, freeze the path!"

The wolf opened his jaws.

"Fox Fire!"

A blizzard-blue blast streaked across the clearing. Demonwing moved before it arrived, slipping between frozen branches as the attack swept past and turned the forest floor white with frost.

Darkness gathered between Demonwing's claws.

"Darkness Wave!"

A black torrent tore toward them.

"Move!"

Frostfang leapt sideways.

The attack grazed his flank, leaving dark burns through the fur.

Above them, Tesla climbed beyond the canopy and pivoted toward Dreadtyrant.

Shun's mind was already working.

"Dreadtyrant is stronger physically, but slower. Its turns are poor. Demonwing's mobility is the real problem."

Renji watched Demonwing circle.

"So we stop trying to catch the fast one."

Shun looked toward him.

Renji grinned faintly.

"We make it think we're trying."

Understanding flashed across Shun's face.

Tesla dived.

Dreadtyrant snapped at him.

Too slow.

Tesla rolled around the massive jaws and drove his electrified horn into the tyrannosaur's snout.

CRACK!

Dreadtyrant reeled.

Renji leaned forward.

"Keep Demonwing busy!"

Frostfang charged.

The demon dropped low, claws meeting Frostfang's as the wolf leapt. Their collision threw leaves outward in a ring, and Demonwing twisted away just as Tesla sent another electrical bolt across its path.

Demonwing dodged.

Exactly as they wanted.

Dreadtyrant advanced behind it, fire swelling between its teeth.

Shun saw the alignment first.

"Now!"

Renji raised his Linker.

The Sigil of Friendship burned blue.

"Frostfang! Ice Cannon!"

Frostfang broke away from Demonwing and turned in one fluid movement.

Supercooled energy gathered inside his jaws.

Then erupted.

SHRAAAK!

The beam passed just beneath Demonwing and struck Dreadtyrant directly in the chest.

Renji's Linker flashed.

"Boosted output!"

The beam intensified.

Ice spread across the tyrannosaur's scales, racing over its shoulders, legs and tail until joints locked and the fire inside its mouth sputtered out.

Dreadtyrant roared.

"Tesla!" Shun shouted.

Electricity gathered until Tesla's entire Adult form glowed.

"Electro Shocker!"

The forest turned white.

Lightning slammed into the frozen Dreadtyrant.

Ice shattered outward.

Electricity raced through its body.

The enormous creature staggered, took one uncertain step, then crashed sideways hard enough to shake the ground.

Silence followed for half a heartbeat.

Renji stared.

"One."

Demonwing screamed.

"Run," Shun said.

Renji did not argue.

Frostfang sprinted west.

Tesla shot above him.

Neither had enough energy left for another prolonged fight.

Demonwing followed.

They had covered nearly two kilometres before exhaustion began winning.

Frostfang's strides shortened.

Tesla's wings beat unevenly.

Renji could feel his own Linker support weakening, and Shun's breathing had become ragged from maintaining the sonar, enhancements and evolution simultaneously.

"Two kilometres," Shun called. "Approximately."

"Approximately?"

"My readings are unstable!"

"Good enough!"

Behind them came a shriek.

Demonwing burst through the canopy.

Its four red eyes burned with fury.

Renji glanced back.

Too close.

Frostfang was tired.

Tesla was worse.

The next attack would reach them.

Far above, hidden among the branches, Caelan's Eyes of Fate opened fully.

He had watched the entire fight.

Renji and Shun had done well. Better than well. They had found both Sigils, escaped an ambush, adapted under pressure and defeated one Adult-stage enemy while exhausted from two weeks of training.

Caelan had not interfered because they hadn't needed him.

Now the futures changed.

Demonwing overtook them in several paths. In one, Tesla was struck first. In another, Frostfang stumbled. A third ended with Renji taking part of an attack through his Linker barrier. None were fatal immediately, but several became dangerous afterward.

Caelan's expression sharpened.

Enough.

Wind gathered beneath his feet.

He stepped from the branch and vanished.

Renji heard the air crack.

A figure dropped between them and Demonwing.

Caelan landed hard enough to fracture the earth beneath his boots, wind exploding outward in a circular blast that sent leaves and broken branches spinning through the forest.

Frostfang skidded to a halt.

Shun stared.

"Caelan?"

Caelan glanced over one shoulder.

"You took your time."

Renji's expression flattened.

"You followed us."

"Obviously."

"You could've said something."

"Then you would've behaved differently."

Demonwing screamed and lunged forward—

—and stopped.

Its talons dug into the earth.

Its wings snapped outward.

Every line of its body strained toward Caelan, but the attack simply did not happen.

There was no invisible force physically holding it back. No chain around its limbs. Its future simply contained no path in which it attacked him.

Demonwing could attack Renji.

It could attack Shun.

It could fight Frostfang or Tesla.

But Caelan stood directly between them now.

And Demonwing was not strong enough to attack him.

Renji frowned.

Shun understood a heartbeat later.

"Destiny's Chosen."

Caelan smiled.

"Exactly."

Demonwing shifted sideways, searching for an opening around him.

Caelan shifted with it.

The creature tried the other direction.

Caelan remained between it and the boys.

It hissed, four red eyes burning with frustrated hatred.

"You can run," Caelan said pleasantly. "That option still exists."

Demonwing spread its wings.

It chose to stay.

Caelan's smile widened.

"Good."

Then he attacked.

One hand swept sideways.

Wind compressed along his arm into a thin, nearly invisible blade.

Demonwing's instincts screamed.

It crossed both forearms and folded one wing across its torso.

BOOM!

The wind blade struck the defensive posture and hurled the creature backward through two trees.

It recovered in the air, beating its wings furiously and twisting away as Caelan launched another compressed edge.

Demonwing dodged.

A third followed.

It blocked this one with both claws, though the impact forced it downward.

Caelan walked forward.

Demonwing retreated.

It never counterattacked.

It couldn't.

Every instinct might have demanded that it claw, bite, blast him with darkness or crush him with Demonic Gale, but those futures did not exist.

Caelan's Eyes of Fate watched its available choices shrink to defence and escape.

"Left."

Demonwing jerked right instead.

Caelan had already known it would.

Wind struck from that side and knocked it back toward him.

The creature spread its wings to regain balance.

Golden light flashed.

Chains of Fate erupted from the air.

Demonwing twisted desperately.

One chain missed.

Another snapped around its arm.

A third wrapped its wing.

Then another caught its torso.

The creature clawed at the bindings, trying to tear itself free rather than attack Caelan.

The chains tightened.

Its movements slowed.

Its four eyes widened.

Caelan noticed.

A small, unpleasant smile touched his face.

"There it is."

Renji glanced toward Shun.

"What?"

Shun kept his voice low.

"I think he likes it when they're afraid of him."

Renji watched Caelan for another second.

"That's mildly concerning."

Demonwing thrashed harder.

Caelan's smile faded as quickly as it had appeared.

He had played enough.

Wind gathered around the bound creature.

Not a hurricane. There was no reason to flatten half the forest simply because he could.

Instead the air compressed into a narrow cyclone around Demonwing's body, turning faster and faster until every current became a cutting edge.

Demonwing folded its remaining free wing around itself, trying to protect its body.

The wind tore into the defence.

Its claws crossed over its chest.

The pressure increased.

The Chains of Fate held.

Caelan closed his hand.

The cyclone collapsed inward.

CRACK.

Demonwing's defence failed.

Its body burst apart into drifting light and scattered essence.

The forest became quiet.

Caelan lowered his hand.

Renji stared at the place where the creature had been.

Then at Caelan.

"You could have done that earlier."

"Yes."

Shun pushed his glasses up.

"Why didn't you?"

Caelan looked genuinely puzzled by the question.

"Because you didn't need me earlier."

Renji opened his mouth, then closed it.

Frostfang gave a low laugh beneath him.

Caelan turned toward them. "You defeated Dreadtyrant yourselves."

Shun looked back toward the path they had escaped through. "We were nearly exhausted."

"I noticed."

"We might not have made it."

Caelan's expression became more serious. "You reached the point where I stopped seeing safe outcomes."

Renji understood immediately.

"Your Eyes of Fate."

Caelan nodded. "Before that, every problem you encountered still had solutions you could reach yourselves. Once that stopped being true, I stepped in."

He glanced toward Demonwing's fading essence.

"You came out here to prove the last two weeks meant something. I wasn't going to take that from you simply because I could make the journey easier."

Renji studied him for several seconds before sighing.

"I hate that I understand your reasoning."

Caelan smiled.

"Good."

By the time they reached the edge of Luminel's domain, both forced evolutions had ended.

Alex walked beside Renji again, visibly exhausted but still carrying himself with as much dignity as he could manage. Tesla had returned to his smaller four-armed form and was riding on Shun's shoulder because his wings had apparently filed a formal complaint against further use.

Caelan walked slightly ahead with his hands behind his head.

Renji watched him for a while before finally speaking.

"You really were following us the entire time."

"Yes."

"Even at the well?"

"From a tree."

"You heard everything."

"Most of it."

Renji's eyes narrowed.

Caelan glanced backward.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"That's rarely true."

Shun looked down at his new Sigil.

Orange-gold light pulsed softly from it.

Renji's own blue Sigil rested near his Linker.

After a while Caelan slowed enough to walk beside them.

"You found what you came for."

Shun nodded.

Renji remained quiet.

Caelan noticed.

He noticed most things.

"You don't like yours."

Renji looked at him sharply.

"I didn't say that."

"You didn't need to."

Renji sighed.

"Friendship."

Caelan waited.

"I don't know if it fits."

Alex looked up but did not interrupt.

Renji shoved his hands into his jacket pockets.

"I care about people. I know that. But I'm not Haruto. I'm not Misaki. I don't immediately decide everybody in trouble is my responsibility."

"Good."

Renji blinked.

"What?"

Caelan shrugged.

"You're not supposed to be Misaki."

Shun's mouth twitched.

Caelan continued. "Misaki sees someone who needs help and starts helping before she's finished deciding whether it's sensible. That's compassion."

Renji nodded slowly.

"You?"

Caelan looked at him.

"You decide who matters to you, then become extremely difficult when something threatens them."

Alex made an approving sound.

Renji frowned.

"That doesn't sound flattering."

"It wasn't meant as an insult."

Caelan's gaze shifted toward the blue Sigil.

"Friendship doesn't require you to care about every stranger the same way you care about Yuto."

Renji's expression softened at his brother's name.

"It means you form bonds and treat them as real obligations."

Caelan looked forward again.

"You argue with Haruto because his decisions matter to you. You worry about Shun because he's walking beside you. You probably spent half this journey wondering whether leaving Yuto asleep was irresponsible."

Renji stared.

"How did you—"

"You are easy to read when you're worried."

Renji looked annoyed.

Caelan smiled.

"You don't have trouble caring about your friends. You have trouble admitting how many people have become your friends."

That landed.

Renji looked away.

Shun very carefully did not smile.

Caelan's tone became lighter.

"The Sigil apparently noticed before you did."

Renji touched the blue symbol.

Alex nudged his leg.

"I told you."

"You tell me many things."

"Most are correct."

"Debatable."

Shun finally laughed.

The tension eased.

They continued through the mist.

After a while Shun looked at his own Sigil.

"I suppose mine is going to be equally irritating."

Caelan glanced at the orange-gold symbol.

"Knowledge?"

"Yes."

"You'll enjoy that."

"That's what worries me."

Caelan laughed.

The safe lights of Luminel's domain appeared ahead between the trees.

Renji looked toward them and felt some of the weight leave his shoulders.

They had left exhausted, uncertain and carrying questions. They were returning even more exhausted, with several new questions, two Virtue Sigils and the uncomfortable knowledge that the training had worked. Not enough to make them invincible, and certainly not enough to make the world safe, but enough that when two Adult-stage enemies had trapped them in the dark, Renji and Shun had not frozen and waited for somebody stronger to save them. They had thought, adapted, trusted their partners and trusted each other, and brought one enemy down themselves.

Caelan had only stepped in when there was no longer a safe path they could walk alone.

For Renji, perhaps that was the strangest lesson of the night.

Friendship did not mean someone always fought your battles for you.

Sometimes it meant knowing they were there when the road became too heavy to finish alone.
