Chapter 214 - Chapter 214 – Time Walker

Qianchi Sandevistan Mk.4.

A truly top-tier piece of speedware.

Whether in the game or in reality, the only word that fit it was "terrifying."

In the game, it was a legendary cyberware implant, requiring 15 Reflex to equip.

In the real world, it was likewise one of the highest-grade speed components in existence—the first fourth-generation Sandevistan on the market.

With Xu Wanxue's compromise, he could finally install the cyberware he had dreamed about for so long.

This was, without question, the most surprising, most unexpected day of his life.

In his previous life, thanks to the Simulator, he always had a rough idea of what would happen the next day.

Because of that, "surprises" and "the unexpected" basically didn't exist in his personal experience.

But today had unfolded completely differently.

According to the original simulated route, if he hadn't come to Qianchi last night, he'd still be sitting in a classroom at Arasaka Academy right now.

And yet here he was, listening to the "gift" his sister whispered in his ear for the very first time—

and finally understanding what people meant by surprise.

A thousand thoughts surged through his head, but what ultimately came out of his mouth was just a simple, sincere:

"Thank you."

Xu Wanxue only smiled faintly and reached out to ruffle his hair.

She didn't linger on the emotional stuff.

Xu wasn't that kind of sentimental woman—

or rather, she only allowed herself to be sentimental when it came to Lin Mo.

They exchanged a few more words, and then Liu Ruoying, who had just climbed up from the floor, was instantly reassigned as a full-time tool—

taking on the job of handling Lin Mo's implant surgery.

Before leaving, Xu instructed the intel division to pry open the assassins' mouths as fast as possible and squeeze out every scrap of information they had.

The rest no longer required her attention.

After giving her orders, she led Lin Mo to another floor.

The implantation procedure wasn't all that complicated.

In an age of high cyberization, surgeries like this weren't much different from a routine tooth extraction.

Of course, that assumed you had a cyberware doc who was good enough.

Even though this was a brand-new, next-generation Sandevistan, as the chief cyberware specialist of Kang Tao's Night City branch, Liu Ruoying handled the whole operation flawlessly.

Under her expert hands, Lin Mo's Dinara Sandevistan Mk.3 was smoothly removed and replaced with the Qianchi Sandevistan Mk.4.

Thanks to the anesthetics, he felt nothing during the procedure.

He knew, logically, that he now carried one of the strongest pieces of cyberware in the world…

but it still didn't feel entirely real.

When the numbness finally began to fade, he was already standing in the cyberware test hall, ready to see what this new Sandevistan could really do.

As Xu put it, she had never once imagined that her own little brother would one day stand here as a test subject for her own research project.

For the last few months, this space had belonged to the other experimental candidates.

New company-developed cyberware was all tested here.

Now, every unrelated person had been cleared out.

The wide-open hall held only three people: Xu Wanxue, Liu Ruoying, and Lin Mo.

Between the two of them, Xu and Liu could operate all the test rigs and monitoring systems.

They didn't need anyone else.

Xu also didn't want outsiders seeing Lin Mo's results.

It was a matter of privacy—and safety.

Standing on the test track, Lin Mo's first round of testing focused on his baseline speed.

Without using the Sandevistan, he stepped onto a specialized treadmill and did a 100-meter sprint.

Final result: 8.22 seconds.

And that was without activating his perk [Blood and Raw Flesh].

It wasn't an especially outrageous time, and Lin Mo had expected as much.

Reflex did influence short-burst sprint speed, sure—

but the ceiling was still limited by the body's physical stats.

He remembered when his Reflex had only been 10; he literally could not break the 10-second barrier without relying on that perk.

Now, with higher Body and 15 Reflex, he could easily surpass the threshold that had once blocked him.

Under Xu's instructions, he activated the Qianchi Sandevistan Mk.4 for the first time and began his real sprint.

In the control room, the two women in lab coats stared at the live data feeds on the screen, stunned into silence.

Because of the treadmill's limitations, Lin Mo didn't test his accelerated sprint on it.

Instead, they moved him to an open testing track in the adjacent hall.

To the naked eye, all they saw was this:

Lin Mo started at one end of the track—

then, in a heartbeat, he was suddenly at the other end.

The middle part might as well not have existed.

"Blink of an eye" didn't even do it justice—

words like instant, split-second, a flash were closer to the truth.

But the test instruments had recorded everything in detail.

Liu Ruoying let out a low whistle.

"Personally, I'd recommend sending your brother to race a high-speed train. At this rate, he could easily take a shot at the Guinness World Record.

I still remember the last guy who set that record—

he used a custom Sandevistan and, under three seconds, pushed his body to 300 kilometers per hour for a short burst..."

Her eyes shone with admiration.

"Compared to Lin Mo, though? The guy loses in both duration and tolerance. By a long shot."

From the day the Sandevistan was invented, the world had been obsessed with it—military circles, black clinics, corpos, everyone.

It allowed a human brain to enter a slowed-time frame of reference, and even forced the body to keep up with that accelerated perception for a short period.

Its sister OS, the Berserk operating system, only enhanced the body: raw strength, toughness, combat instinct.

With the right neural support hardware, a Berserk user could fight a Sandevistan user on somewhat equal terms—

but there was no doubt speedware still had the edge.

As a result, cyberware companies had fallen into an arms race:

"Our Sandevistan broke the Guinness speed record."

"Our Gorilla Arms once punched a brown bear to death in a demo."

Excellent marketing material.

"Two hundred and seventy-plus kilometers per hour…"

Xu Wanxue stared blankly at the numbers and the test track feed.

"A peregrine falcon's dive speed is only a bit over three hundred.

I hate to say it, but Lin Mo is… a monster."

She knew exactly what these metrics meant.

She'd watched this OS go from concept to finished product—

and seeing it wielded like this, by her own brother, hit her harder than all the lab data combined.

Liu Ruoying continued:

"Based on the measurements just now, we can basically confirm this:

after activating the Qianchi Sandevistan Mk.4, Lin Mo's personal time dilation pushes the world down to about 16% of normal speed.

The standard average for this model is around 25%.

Which means, in his case, the system is running in permanent overclock."

Xu let out a slow breath.

"I thought that after living with him for so long, I'd already gotten used to the shocks he gives me.

Looks like I was too naive."

"Can you not say things that make people jealous right in front of me?" Liu groaned.

"I'm still not used to this at all. Why don't you lend me your little brother for a while? Let him stay at my place so I can get used to it too."

Xu looked at her with a cold, garbage-sorting expression.

"...Okay, okay, no lending, I get it," Liu said quickly, shrugging and dropping that dangerous idea. Then she changed the subject:

"So, how are you feeling now?

At his current speed, if he wants to work as a merc in Night City, that's basically a tiger returning to the mountains, a dragon diving back into the sea.

I honestly can't think of many people in the world who could go toe-to-toe with him."

"There are still some," Xu said calmly.

"World's a big place. You know that.

"When you were studying at HQ, didn't you hear the internal stories?

"Forget the rest of the world—for our region alone, there's that so-called martial arts master who can cut bullets in half.

"Arasaka has Adam Smasher—that thing barely counts as human anymore.

"And the world's top-tier merc teams are full of cyber-psychos like that.

"Compared to them, Lin Mo is still too young."

Liu curled her lip, smiling like she saw straight through her.

They'd been friends long enough—she knew exactly what Xu was doing.

This ultimate little-brother simp was only talking like this so Liu wouldn't get any strange ideas about Lin Mo.

Seeing that Xu was about to continue, Liu hurriedly cut in with a peace offering:

"Alright, alright, I know—there's always someone stronger, always another sky above.

Your brother's not invincible.

But at the very least, in Night City, there's basically no one who can match him, right?"

For once, Xu didn't refute her.

But there was still a trace of worry in her eyes.

"His strength does put me more at ease…

but modern warfare isn't decided by individuals.

If he ever gets caught in concentrated artillery fire, he could still die."

Liu pressed a palm to her forehead.

Who the hell was going to call in artillery bombardment inside the city just to kill one kid?!

And it wasn't like Night City was currently at war.

"If you still don't feel it's safe enough, how about adding some modules to his OS?

The Mk.4 has three mod slots—leaving them empty would be a waste," Liu suggested.

Xu thought for a moment, then nodded.

"We can. What do you recommend?"

She wasn't a cyberware engineer.

Better to leave this part to her best friend.

Liu answered confidently:

"I'd say an Overclock Processor is a good start—extend his max activation time.

Then a Micro Amplifier—nanotech support that, when the Sandevistan is active, not only boosts muscle output but also temporarily amplifies regeneration, giving immunity to bleeding, speeding up metabolism, and resisting toxins.

Lots of negative status effects could be muted or outright negated.

"Aside from those two, there are other good options too.

My personal suggestion: let Lin Mo choose for himself.

He's the one who'll be using the cyberware in the field."

Xu nodded in agreement.

Then, as she watched Lin Mo finish his test run and walk slowly toward them, Liu's eyes suddenly gleamed with mischief.

"Actually, I have one more idea.

If Lin Mo can use this OS multiple times per day…"

Her smile turned downright wicked.

"Then installing three cooling modules might be the optimal setup."

Xu's eyebrow lifted. She immediately caught the implication.

"You mean…"

"The Qianchi Sandevistan Mk.4, project codename: Time Walker. You showed me the internal docs yourself—of course I know why it was given that name.

"If we slot in three cooling mods, we can push the extreme cooldown time down to around three seconds.

"If he can chain-use it after that…

then he won't just be using the Time Walker.

He'll be the Time Walker."
