Chapter 19 - Chapter 18: Hiro Kitagawa

Lin Mo walked to the roadside and casually made a mental call. In no time, the nearest Delamain taxi glided smoothly toward him—professional enough to be considered the most competent taxi driver in the world.

"Welcome to Delamain Taxi Services, sir. A pleasure to see you again," the bald AI said in its usual refined tone.

"Take me to Megabuilding H8," Lin Mo instructed.

According to the intel Wakako had given him, the client currently resided in that very tower.

"Understood. Destination: Megabuilding H8. Estimated travel time: fifteen minutes. Please sit back and relax."

Fifteen minutes later, the Delamain cab pulled up in front of a towering skyscraper, as immense and imposing as a mountain rising from flat earth.

The building was shaped like a reversed 'pin' character—modular in construction, bearing heavy industrial design, yet with a distinctive sci-fi flair.

Lin Mo was familiar with this type of structure. He still remembered how, in the game, V started out living in a megabuilding just like this.

Each megatower housed around two thousand apartments, and with such a massive population came massive infrastructure: shops, stalls, gun stores, even bars—everything one could need.

Inside, the layout followed a square loop around a central shaft. The top floors usually featured more luxurious suites—lounging on a balcony, soaking up the sun, looking down at the city, you could almost imagine the whole world was in your grasp.

For the average Night City resident, renting even a basic unit in a megabuilding counted as a decent life.

But as Lin Mo approached the elevator and saw the digital panel, his expression shifted.

On Floor 12, the display read: Clouds.

"...Right. Almost forgot—this city's most famous dollhouse is inside a megatower. No wonder this felt familiar," Lin Mo muttered, face a bit awkward.

Whether in-game or in the real Night City he now lived in, Clouds—located in Japantown—was legendary among doll clubs.

The reason? The service was reportedly incredible. Lin Mo had once looked up information out of curiosity.

That "research" had fired up his blood and deeply traumatized his "innocent" young heart.

Terms like Angels, Blue Sky, Succubi, Gemini Twins, Double Cannons, Snakefolk... they all expanded his worldview far beyond its limits.

And then, one day, during a deep cleaning, Xu Wanxue had found his "secret stash" of magazines under the bed. Furious, she'd docked his entire allowance for the month.

Thankfully, she was more gentle than strict—otherwise, he might've gotten more than just a scolding.

Thinking about Clouds also reminded Lin Mo of a certain character.

"In the game's prologue... wasn't Evelyn Parker working here? That slightly clever but ultimately doomed woman."

There were still two years before the game's main story began. He had no intention of interfering. If he triggered any events too early, he might not survive the consequences with his current strength.

After a moment's hesitation, Lin Mo pressed the button for Floor 15. Once the elevator arrived, he stepped out and headed to the client's apartment.

At the door, he knocked and patiently waited.

Soon, the electronic lock disengaged, and the door opened. A man appeared in the frame.

Messy, bird's-nest hair, Asian features, thin jacket, and bloodshot eyes that looked like he hadn't slept in days.

His right forearm had been replaced by a full cyberarm, with a matte black sensor panel embedded in the palm.

The man scanned Lin Mo quickly and barked in Japanese, clearly irritated, "What's a brat doing here? You got the wrong door!"

"Wakako sent me. I'm the one who accepted your job," Lin Mo replied calmly, stepping back a little—this guy stank.

The man paused. "You're... Lin Mo?"

"That's right. Nice to meet you, Mr. Hiro Kitagawa."

Hiro's expression grew darker. He looked Lin Mo over again, and streams of data flickered in his eyes—he was pulling up Lin Mo's profile.

"Wakako said the runner she found was young... I guess she wasn't kidding. How old are you?"

"Sixteen," Lin Mo replied steadily.

"Sixteen... not the worst. What kind of gigs have you done? Got any cyberware?"

"None worth mentioning. Besides standard implants for daily use, I've only got a smartlink in my hand."

Hiro: "..."

He stared in silence, wondering if he'd misheard—or if Wakako had messed up big time.

This kid was practically a blank slate. And Wakako dared to recommend him?

If it weren't for the fact that every minute wasted meant more danger for his sister, Hiro would've already called Wakako to ask if she was joking.

Even if she was the best fixer in Westbrook, this felt like a slap in the face.

"Smartlink, huh? You carrying smart weapons?" Hiro's eyes narrowed, gaze drifting to the pack on Lin Mo's back.

Lin Mo nodded.

"What kind?" Hiro asked, mentally bracing himself.

If the kid pulled out a cheap D5 Sidewinder from Nokota, he was kicking him out on the spot.

"Kang-Tao A-22 Overpistol and a G-58 Dian SMG," Lin Mo answered coolly.

Hiro stared for a long moment. Finally, he stepped aside. "Come in."

A Dian SMG—Kang-Tao's newest smart submachine gun—was worth twice as much as a heavy weapon. You could trade one for a guided missile launcher and a few warheads.

Sure, its damage didn't match that of an explosive payload, but the price tag alone said it all.

A rookie—packing Kang-Tao's latest smart hardware?

Interesting. Hiro clicked his tongue in surprise as Lin Mo entered the apartment.
