The woman's breathing was faint, her weakness almost visible to the naked eye.
"Lin Mo, she can't take any more. Even if we carry her out, she might die on the way," Sasha said solemnly.
Lin Mo didn't react much. Instead, he glanced at the others lying on the beds and asked, "What about them?"
Sasha activated the scanner in her cybernetic eye and carefully observed the unconscious victims. Finally, she shook her head silently.
"Six people. Two are already dead. The remaining four have had their usable organs and implants taken. Honestly, there's no saving them."
Cybernetic eye scanners really are handy... Lin Mo glanced at the victims.
Unlike Sasha, who could assess their conditions at a glance, he could only tell that their injuries were severe but couldn't determine the specifics.
"Are they in pain?" Lin Mo suddenly asked, eyes downcast.
Sasha froze, her pretty brows furrowing slightly as a disturbing thought crossed her mind.
She asked softly, "Lin Mo, are you thinking..."
Lin Mo nodded silently and unsheathed his katana halfway.
"I can't save them. But I can make sure they don't suffer any longer."
The katana stopped at half draw. He looked hesitant.
"Sometimes, even choosing how to die with dignity isn't easy. A gunshot leaves a hole. A blade leaves a scar."
He sighed, slid the katana back into its sheath, and pulled out a pneumatic injector from his waist pouch, swapping in a new vial.
"Combat stimulant?" Sasha asked, examining the injector and the label on the vial.
"Yeah. In their condition, this stuff is basically poison. It'll let them die with some dignity," Lin Mo said calmly.
Sasha looked at his composed face and had to admit—this was the most striking Asian face she'd ever seen.
If you gave him a halo, wings, and a touch of makeup, considering how young he still looked, he could probably pass for an angel.
But the angel before her had a face that was half serene, half executioner.
A merciful angel of death... Sasha thought in a daze.
After Lin Mo finished administering the shots to each of the victims, Sasha gazed at him and softly muttered, "Those aren't cheap..."
"Peace of mind. Once you have enough money, having more won't make you the one writing the rules. Having less won't stop you from eating."
Then he looked at the mission target and hesitated. After a moment, he took out another vial.
"MaxDoc Mk.3?" Sasha asked, surprised. Her eyes widened, and her mouth dropped slightly—a rare show of genuine emotion.
It was the first time she'd ever looked shocked in front of Lin Mo.
"I don't want the target to die. I'm still aiming to get into Lizzie's Bar. If she dies, it won't help my mission rating," Lin Mo explained.
That's... obscenely generous, Sasha thought to herself.
Seeing Lin Mo inject the MaxDoc into the woman's chest without hesitation, Sasha couldn't help but whisper, "You really are gentle, Lin Mo."
"Heh, if the Scavs I just killed heard that, they'd probably claw their way out of their graves," Lin Mo replied with a self-deprecating chuckle.
After a short pause, he added, "Besides, in Night City, kindness is the fastest way to lose money."
Sasha looked at him and said slowly, "But to some people, it's priceless."
"Only if they're lucky enough to run into a rich, naive beauty who happens to fall for them. That's when being gentle pays off," Lin Mo replied with a dry, emotionless laugh.
The word "gentle" reminded him of a certain garbage-tier romance anime. The protagonist always had some pretty girl calling him "yasashii."
Sasha didn't understand the reference but caught the meaning.
"If there were more people like you in Night City, maybe we wouldn't see so many tragedies," she said, her voice full of unspoken meaning.
Lin Mo glanced at her, sensing something hidden in her words, but didn't press it.
"She should make it now, right?"
He looked at the woman, whose breathing had become more stable, and asked casually.
Sasha scanned her again and nodded. "Your MaxDoc has stabilized her. She'll be okay for now. But without kidney implants soon, she won't last."
"As long as she doesn't die on the way out."
The next moment, Lin Mo did something that stunned Sasha.
He raised his hand and lightly slapped the woman's face.
Slap. Slap. Slap.
"Hey, wake up!"
The woman had a soft, serene appearance, exuding kindness and humility. It was easy to imagine her as the radiant school goddess adored by a crowd of simps.
But now, that once-adored face was pale and hollow. Her eyes opened weakly, like someone waking from a nightmare.
Lin Mo recalled her intel—given to him by Wakako Okada.
Kawa Fujiwara, a high school student at a private academy in Night City. Her father had once served as a military tech officer, now working as a security chief for a corporation.
Even a low-level corporate job was highly sought-after, and being a security chief meant holding real authority.
She had been dragged into this mess by a classmate who had heard about a party targeting young people and invited a few friends to join.
It wasn't just the Scavs' deception—these girls were too naive.
She truly had that innocent, untainted face. A look of purity untouched by the world.
The girl reached out and gently clutched Lin Mo's shirt, her eyes full of pleading.
"Please... can you use your blade and set me free?" she whispered.
Trapped in hell, even the senses dulled. She still thought she was in a cage. The boy before her just another Scav accomplice.
But with a face that clean, that pure... maybe he had a little conscience left. If he could end it for her, end the pain...
Lin Mo looked at her quietly, as if considering the request. Then he sighed, shook his head, and said firmly:
"No."
"If you want to die, pay me back first."
She stared at him, confused. Then at Sasha, who was stifling laughter.
"Sir, I think you're mistaken... This is our first time meeting. I've never owed you anything," the girl said timidly.
"You didn't. But now you do. I just used a MaxDoc Mk.3 on you. When you get out, have your dad pay me back," Lin Mo said teasingly.
"A MaxDoc Mk.3? What... is that?"
"A top-tier nanite emergency med, worth tens of thousands. Usually only used by Trauma Team to save lives in the worst conditions," Sasha chimed in from the side, clearly enjoying herself.
"So your life now comes with debt. At least wait until you pay it off before trying to die again. Got it?"
Lin Mo raised his voice.
Kawa was stunned by the scolding, but soon realized she'd been rescued.
Faced with Lin Mo's fierce stare, she slowly lowered her head and gave a small nod.
See? Sometimes yelling works. Lin Mo felt proud of his rescue strategy.
Just as he turned to leave, someone tugged on his shirt.
Kawa, face blushing, held onto his shirt with one hand, the other clutching the apron tightly over her body.
"Could you... find me some clothes?"
