Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

Damon's POV

"We have two hours before going downtown to meet with someone else." I said.

Emily had been acting weird, and I knew why.

 "Okay." She replied.

I stood behind her, but close to her. We were going to the twentieth floor of The Damon Empire. The elevator ride would take about three to five minutes.

"Do you have questions?" I asked.

"Not really." Emily replied. "Am I taking this job from someone else?"

"She's interim." I answered her, clearing my throat. It was the truth.

"I don't know if I like the sound of that." Emily replied.

I chuckled. For someone as stubborn and strong-headed as she proved to be she also had a really soft heart. I just knew life with her was going to be very interesting.

"You're mine, Emily. That's no one's job but yours." Finally we arrived on the floor that housed my office.

I had two prospective buyers coming in.

We were thinking of expanding our exporting territories and so, we invited them to see if we can start sending oil overseas.

"Hello, Mr Damon." A middle aged man in Grey suit greeted me as soon as I walked into my office.

He'd been waiting for almost twenty minutes from the info I got at my secretary's desk.

Emily just kept on tagging along, and made sure never to lag more than a few centimetres behind.

I contemplated letting her sit in on our discussion, or having her wait outside.

As much as I wanted to trust her, I also needed to consider the fact that she and Dathan were best of friends, and there's just some things that I didn't want Dathan knowing, at least not yet.

"Baby," I called her attention, "would you like to sit inside while we discuss?" I pointed in the direction of another room. Since it was an inner room in my office, the door was made to rhyme with the walls, and so there was no detectable evidence of there being another room, only very few people knew of it.

"You got yourself a pretty one, young man." Mr Howard, my soon to be business partner, smiled lustfully.

I already hated him.

"Shall we get to the business we are here for?" I said, clearing my throat.

"Yes." He said, finally wiping the silly smile off his face.

The result of the meeting, well, since he had a really good offer, I had to accept.

I referred him to the down floor for finalising the deal cause he was gonna be flying out immediately we got done.

I checked my watch, it was around ten am.

Emily and I had to meet Adrian and his girlfriend. I totally forgot about it until a few minutes ago.

"Hello." I said, announcing my presence.

"I was starting to get bored." She replied.

Emily's head was resting on the polished wooden desk, and she looked just as bored as she sounded.

"I'm sorry. I didn't need minutes for that meeting, hence why I didn't ask you to sit in." I explained hastily. "We have lunch with an Alpha and his girlfriend by twelve. We have to leave now." I added.

"Just like that?" She asked, wide eyed.

"Yeah, we'll be back in the office by two. Fahr is waiting downstairs."

I took off my suit jacket and left the vest on.

It was chilly outside, but all the restaurants I dined in had heaters installed.

"After you." I said, like a gentleman, with my hand on the small of her back.

I locked my office door, and threw the keys in my trouser pocket.

When we got back down, Farh was ready to go, so we got in and began the journey to Mount West Restaurant, a big fancy place about twenty minutes from the office.

I gave thought to negotiating the terms of our marriage with Emily, and I thought it was best to do it before meeting with Adrian. She didn't have to give an answer just yet. She could mull about it all day, and we'll discuss it at night.

At 22, I'd be excused for feeling the way I was beginning to feel about her. I was far smarter than most of my mates, I looked older, started to bulk up already, through it all, I was an eye candy. Every woman's dream, really.

"Is all of this a restaurant?" Emily asked. I loved being able to put that look on her face.

She looked so innocent when she was surprised.

"Yeah. They've been around since the 1800's." I replied to her.

"That's a lie." She said in disbelief.

 "It's a fifth generation project." I added.

"You know the owners?" She asked, still looking at all the flowers that hung from various parts of the wall. The brick design, the art by broken mirrors too.

"My grandfather sponsored the renovation, and gave them some extra piece of land." I boasted.

 "That's just…" Emily trailed off.

 "Interesting?" I suggested.

"I was gonna say amazing." She smiled.

She let me take her hand as we entered Mount West.

The warm indoors was in sharp contrast with the freezing cold outside.

We were quickly ushered to the last floor, where I preferred to dine.

It had fewer dining areas, more space, and overhead was the most beautiful aquarium ever.

I don't know how they made it work, but they just did. The beautiful fishes swam in the glistening, clear way, paying no attention to all the curious diners beneath.

As I expected, Emily was dumbstruck. The choicey fish species held her attention the whole while I placed our orders.

For a minute, I wished I was one of them. So I could hold her awe and gaze as they did.

"We need to talk." I said, clearing my throat and calling her attention.

We had no company on the floor. I booked the whole place for two hours, but I wasn't gonna tell her that.

"What is it?" She asked, with a look of mild disappointment from being distracted from her favorite watch.

 "I've been thinking." I started.

"Thinking about what?" She asked. It was like she just wanted me to get it over with, so she could go back to staring dumbly at fishes.

I quenched the growing annoyance in me.

I couldn't blame her. She'd barely been outdoors, ever. Not at the orphanage, not at the palace.

"I don't want to be your husband anymore." I said, making air quotes on 'husband'.

It was then I got her attention.

Her eyes flew wide open, wider than I'd ever seen.
