Chapter 388 - Chapter 388: The Dead Are Pretty Chill

Lilith, who hadn't shown up in a while, strolled through a gray, misty world.

This place was bizarre, drenched in a monochromatic gray that gave off an ancient, faded vibe, like someone slapped a grim BBC filter over everything.

Every now and then, shadowy figures with dazed expressions would pop up around Lilith.

Even spotting the stunning Lilith didn't faze them—they just shuffled along like a bunch of zombies.

As mentioned before, Earth is connected to various other realms, the most famous being Heaven and Hell.

These two have been tightly linked to Earth since ancient times, and that hasn't changed.

But not everyone who dies ends up in Heaven or Hell.

Only the devout and virtuous get a ticket to Heaven, while the wicked are sent to Hell for punishment.

Most people, though—the average folks who don't quite qualify for Heaven's blessings or Hell's torments—need a different place to go, so they don't linger on Earth and mess with the living.

That place is Limbo.

The name might sound like it's tied to Hell, but it's a completely different deal.

In Christian lore, Limbo is where souls who never heard Jesus's gospel but didn't commit any sins end up.

Other mythologies have similar concepts, calling it the Underworld, the Gray Realm, or the Land of the Dead.

Different names, same idea: a place for departed souls to hang out.

Those dazed figures around Lilith? They're freshly dead souls, just arrived.

People who don't follow the Abrahamic faiths don't get escorted to Heaven for judgment, so they wind up in Limbo.

Without angelic guidance, these souls wander in confusion for a bit.

Luckily, Limbo's had thousands of years to develop its own unique system: the Underworld Police Department.

Think of it like a regular police force, but for maintaining order in Limbo and helping newly arrived souls adjust to "life" here.

Yeah, "life" might sound odd in a place with no living people.

Occasionally, some souls manage to sneak back to the human world through weird means, and the Underworld Police have to drag them back.

Following a mysterious pull, Lilith arrived at what looked like an underground tunnel.

Just then, two uniformed Underworld cops appeared, and Lilith quickly cloaked herself.

After signing a contract with Elizabeth, Lilith's illusion magic had gotten a major boost. Even Roy's Eye of Truth might not see through her now.

The two cops—one tall and lanky, the other short and chubby—chatted as they entered the tunnel.

"Nick, you hear about the Great Necromancer escaping?"

"What? For real?"

The tall cop nodded vigorously.

"Dead serious. I went to see the boss, Proctor, this morning, and she was signing a wanted poster with the Great Necromancer's face on it!"

The chubby cop's face twisted in dismay.

"What the hell?! We're screwed! There goes my vacation this year! Dammit, my wife's gonna divorce me for sure!"

The tall cop gave his partner a curious look.

"Chloe, I've always wondered—why'd you get married again after dying? Didn't you have enough of that when you were alive?"

"You wouldn't get it! I'm used to married life. If there's no one nagging me, it just feels… off. Wait, I smell something—something alive. That's weird!"

Chloe sniffed the air, picking up an odd scent.

Lilith, hidden in a corner, tensed up. She hadn't been to Limbo in thousands of years and wasn't up to speed on how things worked here now.

She quickly cast a spell to mask her scent.

Back when Lilith was active, Limbo wasn't nearly this populated, and its development was slow.

But over the millennia, Earth's population exploded, and so did the number of souls in Limbo.

Now, Limbo's soul population far exceeds Earth's living population.

It makes sense—souls can fade eventually, but they last way longer than living people.

Barring any accidents, a soul can stick around in Limbo for centuries. Wizards or witches? They can linger for a millennium without breaking a sweat.

So, Limbo's population just keeps growing, with no large-scale decrease in sight.

"Chloe, you sure you're not imagining it? Maybe it's just a new soul still carrying some living aura?"

Chloe rubbed his nose, looking uncertain.

"Maybe? The smell's gone now. Let's just finish our rounds and hope we don't run into the Great Necromancer!"

The two cops poked around the tunnel for a bit and soon spotted a dazed old man.

He was clutching a mop he'd picked up somewhere, diligently cleaning the tunnel.

"Let me check the photo—Kurt Gerald, former janitor. That's gotta be him!"

The tall cop waved a card in front of the old man, whose eyes cleared up instantly. He looked around, panicked.

"Where am I? Who are you?"

Chloe pulled out a badge.

"We're the Underworld Police, and this is Limbo. Mr. Kurt Gerald, you passed away suddenly at work. Your soul's now in Limbo. Come with us to the Underworld Police Department for registration."

After some explanation, the cops got the old man to accept his new reality.

Most dead folks are pretty chill, emotionally speaking. But every now and then, some get worked up over unresolved issues from life.

When that happens, the Underworld Police have to use force to calm them down.

Overall, though, their job's pretty easy.

The really dangerous souls get sent straight to Hell. The ones in Limbo aren't usually troublemakers.

The real hassle comes from wizards or superpowered types who sneak into Limbo, causing headaches for the cops.

When that happens, the Underworld Police issue wanted posters and drag the intruders back to the human world.

If the trespasser's particularly bad, they might even get tossed into Limbo's prison.

Once the cops left with the new soul, Lilith reappeared.

"Didn't expect Limbo to have come this far. Interesting!"

If she didn't have business to attend to, Lilith would've loved to stick around and study the Underworld Police Department's operations.

"Whatever. Let's find that guy first."

Shaking her head, Lilith followed her instincts in a new direction.

Soon, she stumbled upon a hidden warehouse packed with bizarre stuff: mannequins, jars of human organs floating in strange liquids, and some oddly designed machines.

But Lilith's target wasn't any of that. Her eyes locked onto a few unremarkable wooden crates on a shelf.

She opened one and found half a woman's face inside.

"Dorothy, you look like a mess!"

"You… Lilith?"

"The one and only!"

(Dorothy, played by Monica Bellucci, from The Great Necromancer.)

"Your body…"

Dorothy, clearly a witch herself, immediately noticed Lilith wasn't human but a puppet.

"Don't ask—it's a long story. I'll fill you in later if you're curious. Need a hand?"

"No! I can manage!"

Dorothy's half-face climbed out of the crate, struggling to piece her fragmented body back together.

Lilith shook her head with a sigh.

"Still as stubborn as ever. We've been friends for ages—letting me help won't kill you."

Dorothy went quiet for a moment before speaking.

"Fine. Please help me stitch my body back together."

"Easy peasy. Give me a sec!"

---

The scene shifts back to Roy, who'd just wrapped up an intense "battle."

Despite Iris's efforts to resist her desires, under Roy's influence as the embodiment of desire, she succumbed to sensory indulgence.

In the end, she conquered the world's highest peak.

[Ding! Received Iris's Conquest Chest! Open it?]

[Ding! Received Uriel's Conquest Chest! Open it?]

Just like with Michael, Roy scored two Conquest Chests at once.

After the "battle," Roy sat silently, staring at Iris on the table, unsure what to say.

Iris, utterly exhausted, wouldn't even meet his eyes if Elizabeth hadn't forcibly held them open.

"Little Roy, why'd you stop? Out of steam already?"

Roy frowned at Elizabeth. The King of Sloth had already stabilized Iris's condition but hadn't fully healed her.

"Didn't you say you'd heal her if I defiled her?"

"Ha! That little stunt counts as defilement? Little Roy, my idea of defilement isn't that tame!"

Elizabeth was raising the stakes, but Roy didn't have much choice.

As he hesitated, Iris spoke up.

"Mr. Black, do what you must. I can handle it. Physical corruption can't taint a pure soul. As long as I stay true to my heart, I'll be fine."

Elizabeth smirked at Iris.

"Uriel, you're still full of pep, huh? Spouting lines like that? Here, try this!"

Suddenly, Elizabeth grabbed Roy and made him silence Iris in a rather… direct way.

Neither Roy nor Iris expected Elizabeth's move, and she got away with it.

Iris's eyes widened—clearly, this was beyond her limits—but Elizabeth wasn't letting up.

Now Iris couldn't speak at all.

"Professor Elizabeth, this—"

"What, you're not enjoying yourself?"

Honestly, having free rein over a holy angel, even if the physical sensation wasn't perfect, was undeniably thrilling for Roy.

He just didn't want to admit it out loud.

Elizabeth saw right through him and started coaxing.

"Little Roy, if it feels good, go for it. Don't overthink it!"

Roy knew it was wrong. If he just chased what felt good, what separated him from a beast?

But in that moment, he couldn't resist his instincts and let Iris "clean up" a bit.

Iris clearly had something to say, but with her mouth occupied and her body immobile, she was at the mercy of Elizabeth and Roy.

Elizabeth kept egging Roy on, pushing the "battle" from day to night, and night to dawn.

Honestly, Elizabeth looked more thrilled than Iris, almost like she was the one "fighting" Roy all day.

"Professor Elizabeth, happy now?"

Elizabeth beamed, practically glowing.

"Oh, very happy!"

"So, can you heal Ms. Iris now?"

"Huh? Didn't you know? I fixed her body's issues after your second round with her."

Roy shot her a sidelong glance, exasperated.

Elizabeth had pulled this trick before—when Roy was marked by Mammon, and the King of Sloth removed the mark.

She was at it again.

"Professor, why didn't you say so earlier?"

Elizabeth grinned teasingly.

"You and Uriel looked like you were having so much fun, I didn't want to interrupt."

Who was having fun, exactly?

Roy stared at Elizabeth, dumbfounded. The demon queen's skin was thicker than a fortress wall, completely unfazed by his look.

But to be fair, Iris's willpower did seem to crumble toward the end.

Clearly, a human body isn't the same as an angel's.

Angels are pure spiritual beings, driven by willpower.

Humans, though, are easily swayed by their bodies. Under sensory overload, Iris showed signs of giving in.

That was probably Elizabeth's goal.

As a demon queen, what's more satisfying than dragging an angel down?

But Elizabeth wasn't done.

"Little Roy, got any fight left in you?"

No way was Roy going to admit defeat now.

"I could go another day, no problem!"

Elizabeth licked her lips, eyeing him.

"Then let's do it!"

"Wait, what about Iris?"

"Leave her to Allura! Allura, clean up the Wisdom Angel, then join us!"

"Got it, Mommy Elizabeth!"

Allura looked at Iris, covered in "original yogurt," and licked her lips.

"Can't let all this deluxe stuff go to waste!"
