A sharp spark leapt from the gem, striking the circle. The symbols flared, and a tear of light opened in the air before her. It widened slowly, its edges jagged, unstable, showing glimpses of dark woods beyond. The pull of energy tugged at her body, testing her resolve.
Marissa gasped and instinctively clutched Adele's sleeve. "It's opening! But—is it supposed to look like that?"
Adele didn't move from her place, though her body tensed at the sight. "It's rough, but it's holding. Do not let go, Isadora. The path between worlds resists at first."
Isadora gritted her teeth, sweat beading on her forehead as the portal fought against her will. The light flickered dangerously, threatening to snap closed. She poured more of her strength into it, recalling Adele's warning that every opening came with a cost. Her wrist burned beneath the bracelet, but she did not relent.
"Almost there," Adele said firmly, her voice cutting through the hum.
