Chapter 32 - Chapter 32: Shopping with the shadow

Morning sunlight spilled softly through the canopy of palm leaves, casting golden fragments over the camp. The ocean's whisper mingled with the rustle of trees, and for the first time in ages, peace lingered on the island. It was the calm after chaos — the kind that felt almost sacred.

The team had gathered for breakfast, each of them trying to understand the power that now pulsed within their veins.

Emiko sat cross-legged near the shore, humming as small arcs of electricity crackled between her fingertips. They danced like playful spirits, and she laughed quietly each time one sparked too bright. Across from her, Dante flexed his arm, the skin beneath it shimmering faintly with beastly energy. His eyes glowed for a second — feral, unrestrained — before he forced himself to breathe deeply, regaining control.

Chloe knelt a few feet away, her hands wrapped in a faint crimson aura. Flames rippled gently across her fingers, pulsing with her heartbeat. The air around her shimmered with heat, but her expression was focused — determined to master the fire that once consumed her fear.

Freya sat apart beneath the trees, her long brown hair brushing against her shoulders as she stretched her back. Her wings — radiant, metallic, divine — unfolded for a brief moment, each feather catching the light in hues of gold and bronze before retracting with a soft hum into her body. A trace of a smile touched her lips as she admired them, proud yet humbled by the sight.

Mio remained silent on a nearby rock, her gaze distant but thoughtful. She had already been familiar with her power — calm and composed, she simply observed, her eyes occasionally flicking toward Mike, as if silently gauging his next move.

And there was Mike, standing at the edge of the group, arms folded, eyes reflecting both leadership and quiet understanding. His voice broke the morning stillness, steady and deliberate.

"Learn control before you test your limits," he said. "We've come too far to let power dictate purpose."

The others nodded. Emiko pouted briefly, then grinned. "But limits are meant to be tested, Mikey-kun!"

Mike exhaled through a faint smile. "After breakfast."

The laughter that followed was brief, but it felt real. It felt human.

---

A few hours later, deeper within the forest, the air grew cooler beneath the thick shade. Mike and Renji walked side by side, their steps crunching softly against the earth. Renji carried a holographic tablet, blue light flickering across his glasses as he refined the digital blueprint of their future home.

"You're serious about this?" Renji asked, scrolling through projections. "An underground base? That's going to take more than fancy architecture."

Mike's smirk was quiet but confident. "Then let's not build it the slow way."

He lifted his hand.

The ground trembled. Birds scattered from the trees as the soil beneath them began to shift, rise, and spiral upward in a storm of dust and wind. In a heartbeat, an enormous circular section of land lifted from the ground, floating weightlessly in the air before sliding aside like a colossal door. Beneath it, an immense hollow crater formed — smooth, symmetrical, perfect.

Renji's mouth parted slightly. "You... actually just did that."

Mike lowered his hand, dust swirling around his boots. "You handle the engineering. I'll handle the heavy lifting."

Renji crouched at the edge of the crater, fingers flying across his holographic screen. "We'll need energy cores, alloys, circuits, stabilizers. The parts you've given me barely scratch the surface."

Mike's eyes glinted. "Then we'll go restock."

Renji looked up, skeptical. "Restock? Where? You make it sound like we're going to the mall."

Mike turned slightly, sensing the faint shift in the air. A ripple of shadow moved behind him, the light bending subtly around it.

"With me," came a quiet voice from behind.

Echo emerged silently from Mike's shadow, her presence like mist materializing. Her crimson eyes glowed faintly beneath her hood, her tone calm yet reverent. "My liege."

Renji straightened, taking a cautious step back. "You really need to warn people before you do that."

"She's part of the plan," Mike said evenly.

Echo bowed her head. "Your command is absolute."

Mike gave a small nod, his expression unreadable. "We're leaving soon."

Renji looked between them, frowning. "And I assume I'm not invited?"

"You've got a base to build," Mike replied simply. Then, turning to Echo: "You're with me."

The shadows beneath them coiled upward like smoke, wrapping both figures in spiraling darkness. Renji raised an eyebrow as their silhouettes faded into a whirl of light and shadow.

"Well," he muttered, tapping at his tablet again, "guess I'll see what 'shopping' means in apocalypse terms."

---

The world froze mid-breath.

Mike and Echo stood in the middle of an enormous warehouse, the silence deafening. Forklifts were paused mid-motion, a half-fallen wrench hung in midair, and even the hum of machinery had stopped. Mike's power extended outward like invisible ripples, locking time in stillness.

"Let's make this quick," he said.

Echo rose from his shadow, forming beside him like a figure pulled from ink. "Understood."

Without hesitation, she dissolved into shadow and vanished. A moment later, security cameras across the vast hall burst into sparks, one by one — a trail of silent destruction that followed her unseen path. When she reappeared beside him, not a single camera remained functional.

"Efficient," Mike murmured.

She lowered her gaze slightly. "It is my duty, my liege."

With a flick of his wrist, the air shimmered. Crates of dried goods, bags of rice, cartons of noodles, frozen meat, and entire storage racks disintegrated into golden fragments, vanishing into the vortex of Mike's pocket dimension. Within seconds, the warehouse stood barren.

"That's enough to feed a nation," Echo observed softly.

Mike's tone hardened. "That's the point."

He raised his eyes, faint silver light gleaming in them. "Next stop — future site, NASA base."

Echo nodded once, stepping closer. "As you command."

---

The light around them fractured, colors bending and fading until they stood in the ruins of a world long gone. The air reeked of ash and sulfur. The sky was painted in crimson and smoke. Twisted metal and molten ground stretched across the landscape, where once stood NASA's proud fortress.

"This is…" Echo's voice trailed into a whisper.

"The future," Mike said. "The one we'll rewrite."

Movement stirred ahead. Figures crawled from the wreckage — imps, once human, now twisted and aflame. Their bodies were charred, their eyes glowing with infernal hatred, their movements jerky and predatory. A hundred of them filled the broken halls, their growls echoing through the ruin.

Mike took a step back. "Your stage."

Echo drew her twin short katanas, the polished blades whispering as they left their sheaths. For a moment, her crimson eyes gleamed like stars — then she was gone.

The world blurred.

She reappeared among the imps, shadows exploding outward. Each movement was sharp, deliberate — a deadly dance of precision and grace. Her blades carved through burning necks and split flaming torsos in clean arcs of violet light. Ash scattered like snowfall. Screams of fire and agony filled the ruins as she weaved through them, untouchable, unstoppable.

One imp lunged — she split it in two before it could blink. Another hurled flame — she melted into its shadow, reappeared behind it, and severed its head in silence.

By the time the final body hit the ground, the hall was quiet again — save for the faint crackle of dying embers.

Echo stood still, chest rising and falling slowly. A faint pulse of dark energy rippled through her as her aura deepened, solidified. She sheathed her blades, looking toward Mike, who was watching from the distance, arms folded.

"Congratulations," he said, a small smirk forming. "You've crossed your first threshold."

Echo bowed deeply, her voice soft but reverent. "Your will strengthens me, my liege."

Her system flickered faintly, concealing the nature of her newly awakened ability — a secret locked from even her own sight. Mike caught the brief shimmer in her eyes and smiled knowingly.

"Let's finish up."

Together, they moved deeper into the complex. Tanks, missile systems, aircraft, reactors — everything that remained was dismantled and absorbed into Mike's dimensional vault. Decades of technology, centuries of progress — reclaimed in moments.

When they were done, Echo stood silently at his side, her expression unreadable beneath the hood, though the faintest curve of pride tugged at her lips.

"You've done well," Mike said quietly.

Her voice was low but certain. "Always, for you."

---

Moments later, the air bent around them again, and they reappeared in the underground construction zone. Renji was there, standing amid half-formed corridors of steel and light, when a blinding flash announced their return. Two massive containers hit the ground with a heavy thud — filled to the brim with glowing cores, refined alloys, and complex machinery.

Renji stared, blinking rapidly. "You... what—where did you—"

Mike adjusted his gloves, unbothered. "Let's call it... scavenged progress."

Renji's disbelief melted into exhilaration. "With this much material, I can finish the base in a day!"

"Good," Mike said. "Then get to work."

Renji chuckled, already sketching on his screen. "You really make the impossible look easy."

Mike turned, and Echo stood behind him, silent as ever — her crimson eyes glimmering faintly under the facility lights.

"She does too," he said, half-smiling.

Echo bowed slightly. "Always, my lord."

The hum of machinery filled the chamber as Renji began his work, sparks and holograms illuminating the walls. Above them, the island's waves continued their endless rhythm, unaware that beneath their tranquil shore, a new era was quietly being built.
