It was his own doing for using every means possible to make her stay, so he wasn't in any position to ask this question.
Perhaps there was regret; if he hadn't been so forceful back then, would things have been more relaxed between them, and would this question have been easier to voice?
But he made the worst choice, and can only face the worst result.
