Finally unable to endure it any longer, Lux raised the question everyone was itching to ask—everyone except Khione, who had no desire to know. She reasoned that how Nero had accomplished something nobody else ever had was likely tied to a secret of his body or soul. He would share it with her one day if he wished.
"Nero," Lux began, his voice cutting through the comfortable chatter. "How did you do it? How are you able to wield a second Law?"
All eyes turned to him. Nero took a long, slow breath, his expression becoming troubled.
"I wish I knew," he said, the lie coming smoothly through his teeth. "I just felt something calling to me from the depths of my soul, and when I answered, I became able to use it." There was no way he would share his greatest secret. He trusted them, but this was a truth that, if revealed, would unleash unimaginable trouble.
Although no one was fully convinced by Nero's explanation, there was nothing they could do to press further.
