Chapter 248: Ambush Gone Wrong…
~Third POV~
[Hoenn Region, Later, Mauville City]
The Hoenn wind, thick with the scent of salty air and verdant growth, ruffled Azure's disheveled hair. Mauville City hummed around him – a vibrant, electric testament to human ingenuity, a stark contrast to the natural beauty he usually sought with his partners Pikachu and Eevee over his shoulders.
His destination, however, lay beyond the city's metallic embrace, where Route 118 promised the wild, untamed Hoenn he'd set out to explore. Azure was no stranger to new beginnings.
Beside him, two younger trainers bustled with an infectious energy. Sapphire, a bright-eyed girl whose thirst for knowledge rivaled Azure's own experience, was his latest companion and self-proclaimed student.
She clutched a detailed map of Mauville City in her Rotom Phone, her brow furrowed in concentration as she pointed out various shops. Ruby, a young man whose passion for Pokémon beauty burned as fiercely as any battle trainer's, trailed slightly behind, his gaze drifting towards a boutique window displaying intricate ribbons.
Sapphire asked, her voice tinged with a hint of concern as Azure's eyes remained fixed on the city limits, "Master, are you sure you don't want to look around a bit? Mauville has some truly unique items. And Ruby found a fascinating Pokémon grooming salon!"
Azure offered a small, reassuring smile, his gaze softening as he looked at his companions. He says calmly, "I appreciate the thought, Sapphire. But my focus is elsewhere for now. Besides, I must do my own training too. Take this time to have fun because it might be a while before we meet again."
Both nodded in understanding, as it would be this chance before seeing each other again for some time. Azure grinned, seeing their interaction as he said softly, "Now, both of you. Take your time. Explore Mauville. There's much to see and learn here. I'll meet you back at the Pokémon Center later this evening."
Sapphire looked at Azure, a flicker of understanding passing between them. She knew his methods, his penchant for solitary treks, his often-unconventional training regimen, as she says excitedly, "Alright, Master. Be careful. And don't take on too much by yourself."
Azure simply winked, a gesture that conveyed both confidence and a touch of mischief as he uttered, "Don't worry about me. Enjoy yourselves."
With a final nod, he turned, his strides long and purposeful, leaving the city's bustling heart behind. Ruby and Sapphire, after a moment of consideration, decided to heed his advice; their shopping spree was only momentarily delayed by Azure's mysterious departure.

[Hoenn Region, Later, Route 118]
The metallic hum of Mauville faded as Azure walked, replaced by the rustle of tall grasses and the distant cry of a Wingull. Route 118 unfolded before him, a winding path flanked by dense foliage and the occasional glint of water from the sea.
He walked deliberately, his senses sharply attuned to his surroundings. The sun, a warm hand on his back, belied the chill he felt from unseen eyes.
He paused just as the last vestige of Mauville's architecture vanished from sight, a subtle shift in the wind, a faint whisper of disturbed leaves, confirming his suspicions. His lips curled into a faint, knowing smile.
Azure announced, his voice calm, carrying effortlessly across the quiet landscape, "You can come out now. I know you've been following us since the Pokémon Center. It's rude to tail people without making your intentions clear."
From the shadows of the rustling trees and the deeper brush, figures emerged. First, the uniformed grunts of Team Magma, their crimson outfits like bloodstains against the green forest in Route 118.
Then, three more distinct figures stepped forward, their faces etched with a mix of surprise and grim determination. These were the Three Fires, the elite operatives of Team Magma Organization.
Blaise, with his imposing stature and fiery gaze; Courtney, her expression cool and calculating beneath her deadpan expression; and Tabitha, whose gruff, impatient demeanor preceded him.
Blaise, stepping forward, his arms crossed, narrowed his eyes at Azure as he said cautiously in a stern voice, "So, you did notice. For a regional champion, you're… surprisingly observant."
Tabitha interjected, his voice gravelly as his eyes narrowed at Azure dangerously as he said coldly, "We had orders to take out you, the girl, and the boy. But seeing you've split from them, and seemingly come alone… this makes our job much simpler. One less loose end."
Courtney, ever the pragmatist, adjusted her eyes, narrowing as she said in a deadpan voice, "Eliminating the Indigo Champion first will send a clear message. Your companions will be easy prey once you're dealt with."
Azure listened, his expression unreadable. Then he let out a short, soft laugh, a sound that held no mirth, only a profound sense of irony, "Pft! Hahaha! You all came? Eliminate me? That's an ambitious goal for a group still struggling to understand basic tracking etiquette."
He gestured to the surrounding area as he said casually to them in a neutral voice, "And alone? What gave you that impression? I allowed you to ambush me. It was all part of the plan for today's training."
The Three Fires exchanged glances, their surprise turning into a mixture of disbelief and outright amusement. Blaise scoffed as he uttered, "Training? You think this is a training exercise? You lack your main team, save for that old Pikachu and Eevee of yours. This isn't the Kanto League, Champion. This is reality."
Tabitha guffawed, already reaching for his Poke Balls on his belt as he yelled, "Arrogance! The Champion thinks he can take on Team Magma's elite with a few recruits! This will be over before it even begins!"
Courtney, though initially surprised, regained her composure, a faint smirk playing on her lips as she says coyly, "Perhaps he underestimates us, or perhaps… he genuinely believes he can win. Either way, it makes for a more interesting challenge. Let's make this quick. Grunts, ready your Pokémon!"
*Pop*
The Team Magma Grunts, emboldened by their leaders, threw out their Poké Balls, releasing a flurry of Poochyena, Zubat, and Koffing, their numbers quickly swelling to nearly a dozen.
*Pop*
Blaise released a powerful Swellow and Slugma. Tabitha followed suit with his own formidable Mightyena and a menacing Torkoal.
Courtney, with a whisper of a smile, sent out a sleek Ninetales and an agile Swellow. The air crackled with hostility.
Azure remained unfazed, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of anticipation and determination. He corrected, his voice resonating with an unshakeable calm, "My main team is here. And they're ready for their lesson."
*Pop*
With a sweeping motion, Azure's hand moved to his belt, releasing a torrent of light as he simultaneously launched nine Poké Balls into the air. One after another, his Hoenn-focused team materialized, filling the space before him with an impressive display of varied power and presence.
Metang, metallic and formidable, hovered with silent power. Grovyle, agile and sharp, surveyed its opponents with keen eyes.
Gardevoir, graceful and serene, emanated a soft, protective aura. Ninetales, majestic and fiery, its nine tails fanning out like a golden aurora.
Golduck, powerful and focused, its webbed hands ready. Crawdaunt, aggressive and pincered, clicked its claws impatiently.
Bagon, small but brimming with raw potential, roared defiantly. Electrike, buzzing with electric energy, darted restlessly. Vigoroth, hyperactive and eager for battle, bounced on the balls of its feet.
And then, with a final, deliberate flourish, Azure launched two more as he gave commands, "Pikachu, Eevee! You're on cleanup and strategy support!"
Pikachu landed on Azure's shoulder, cheeks sparking, while Eevee trotted to his side, its fur bristling with eagerness. This was not a mere training exercise; this was a crucible.
Azure commanded, his voice ringing with authority, "Metang, Metal Claw on that Mightyena! Grovyle, Quick Attack on the Zubat!"
*Zooom*
The battle erupted into controlled chaos. Metang, responding with a surge of speed, launched itself at Blaise's Mightyena, its claws glowing.
Grovyle, a blur of green, zipped past the charging Poochyena and struck a Magma Grunt's Zubat, sending it reeling. Azure's commands were rapid-fire, precise, his eyes scanning every participant, every move, "Ninetales, Confuse Ray on Tabitha's Torkoal! Gardevoir, Psychic on Courtney's Swellow! Golduck, Surf through the Grunts' line!"
*WOOOOSH*
Ninetales unleashed a disorienting energy that wrapped around Torkoal, causing it to stumble…
*SPLASH*
Golduck, propelled by a watery current, sliced through a group of Grunts' Pokémon, scattering them like bowling pins with a powerful Surf attack...
*SHIII*
… Gardevoir's elegant gesture sent a powerful psychic wave crashing into Swellow, momentarily stunning it. Each strike was intended to do harm and gain experience for them in the process.
Crawdaunt, Electrike, Bagon, and Vigoroth, though newer to group battles, followed their Trainer's lead. Azure gave precise commands with a calm expression, "Crawdaunt, Crabhammer on those Poochyena! Bagon, Headbutt the Koffing! Electrike, Thunder Wave the Zubat! Vigoroth, Mega Punch, full power, on Blaise's Slugma!"
*SMACK*
Crawdaunt's mighty pincers slammed into a Poochyena, sending it flying…
*BASH*
… Bagon, despite its size, charged with surprising ferocity, delivering a potent headbutt to a Koffing…
*ZAP*
… Electrike's electricity coursed through a Zubat, paralyzing it mid-flight...
*SMASH*
Vigoroth, a whirlwind of energy, wound up a devastating Mega Punch. Blaise roared, "Foolish! Slugma, Flamethrower on that Vigoroth!"
*Sssss*
A torrent of fire erupted from Camerupt's mouth, engulfing Vigoroth. Azure's eyes narrowed as he ordered, "Vigoroth, endure! Push past your limits!"
The Wild Monkey Pokémon, consumed by flames, let out a guttural roar, its body glowing with an intense, internal light. It pushed through the flames, ignoring the searing heat, its momentum unstoppable…
*SMASH*
The Mega Punch connected with Slugma's side with an explosive SMASH, sending the Fire-type Pokémon sliding several feet, groaning in pain. As Vigoroth landed…
*Shiii*
… its form shimmered, growing larger, its fur shifting to a more muted grey, its features hardening. Its boundless energy, however, remained. It stood taller, more imposing, a true force of nature.
Azure smirked, seeing Vigoroth evolving as he muttered, "Bout time, big fella. We could use your strength."
*THUD*
The transformation completed, Vigoroth solidified into a magnificent Alpha Slaking. It let out a mighty roar, a display of its newly acquired power, "GRAOOO!!!!"
But Azure knew its Truant ability would soon kick in as he ordered swiftly, "Slaking, utilize your momentum! Mega Punch again! Golduck! Skill Swap with Swellow's Ability."
*Shiii*
The gem on Golduck's head glows pink, and a mass of pink energy with a purple center appears near it and its opponent. Then, the masses are exchanged, swapping Slaking's Truant Ability with Swellow's Guts.
*BOOOM*
Before its innate laziness could settle, Slaking unleashed another devastating blow, its fist already glowing, smashing into Blaise's Slugma once more, taking it out of the fight. And with its ability swapped with Swellow…
Slaking laziness vanished. Its eyes narrowed, then grinned smugly, "Sla… (Thanks for the assist.)"
Golduck nodded as it focused its psychic abilities towards the enemies with a smug grin, "Gol! (Sure, big guys. Now go wild, fellow Alpha.)"
Slaking nodded as the Alpha Ninetales, Golduck, and now Slaking got to work. Tabitha, enraged, yelled out loud, "Torkoal, Gyro Ball on that Bagon! Mightyena, use Crunch!"
*Swooosh*
Torkoal, still dazed from Confuse Ray but following the command, retracted into its shell and spun rapidly towards Bagon. Mightyena lunged for the little Dragon.
Azure commanded calmly, eyes narrowed, with his arms crossed, "Bagon, Agile Style Dragon Breath on Torkoal! Eevee, Protect Bagon!"
*CLANG*
Eevee, quicker than a flash, erected a translucent barrier just as Torkoal crashed into it, deflecting the attack…
*PEW*
Bagon, seeing its chance, unleashed a stream of azure flames at the spinning Torkoal, the elemental energy burning brightly. The impact was significant, but Bagon seemed to be taking a lot of hits from the various grunt Pokémon, its small frame getting battered.
Azure encouraged seeing its level slowly go up as he yelled happily, "Bagon, you're doing great! Keep pushing! Remember your dream!"
*SHIII*
Suddenly, a wave of defiant energy surged through Bagon evolving. Its scales began to gleam, its form elongating and broadening, becoming more armored.
The desire to fly, to soar, manifested as its body reshaped itself, becoming an encased shell. The light subsided, revealing a more robust and heavily armored Shelgon.
It let out a deeper, more resonant roar, its eyes now burning with an unyielding resolve, "SHELLL!!!"
Azure smiled, seeing his Bagon finally evolve under the pressure. Azure commanded, capitalizing on the surge of power, "Shelgon, Dragon Claw on Mightyena! Show them your strength!"
*SHINNG*
Shelgon, still buzzing from its evolution, moved with surprising speed, its claw glowing with draconic energy, striking Tabitha's Mightyena with a powerful swipe, sending it sprawling and unconscious.
The remaining Grunts' Pokémon were starting to show fatigue, their numbers dwindling under Azure's coordinated assault. Courtney, observing the evolving situation with a cold, calculating gaze.
She knew they were losing control. She ordered, targeting the agile Grass-type. "Swellow, Wing Attack on Grovyle! Ninetales, Flamethrower!"
*Swooosh*
*Sssss*
Grovyle, having already dispatched several Grunts' Zubat with its Quick Attack and Leaf Blade, found itself surrounded. Flamethrower sliced through the air, and a Swellow swooped in for a close-range attack.
Azure noticed that his eyes narrowed. Azure instructed calmly, "Grovyle, Double Team, then Leaf Blade to cut through the Flamethrower!"
*Wooosh*
Grovyle created multiple illusions, confusing its attackers, then burst through the Leaf Blade with its sharp leaf blades managed to cut through the fire…
*SMACK*
… But one of Courtney's Swellow landed a critical Wing Attack, sending Grovyle crashing into the dirt, momentarily stunned. Courtney commanded, seeing an opening, "Now, Ninetales, use Hyper Beam!"
Ninetales began charging a colossal energy beam, aiming directly at the fallen Grovyle. Azure's voice boomed, a rare hint of urgency, "Grovyle, no! Use your speed! Get out of there, then Energy Ball, maximum power!"
*SHIII*
Grovyle, battered but not broken, let out a defiant cry. Its body began to glow with an intense, emerald light, its form becoming even leaner, sharper, its leaves expanding into long, blade-like protrusions.
The energy from the surrounding nature seemed to rush into it, fueling its transformation. Azure smiled as he muttered, "Bout time you evolved."
The light was blinding, a flash of emerald green that momentarily disoriented Courtney's Ninetales. When it receded, a magnificent Sceptile stood tall, its forest-green skin gleaming, its whip-like tail now tipped with its signature leaf blades.
It was faster, stronger, radiating an aura of absolute mastery over its element. Azure's command was sharp, precise, "Sceptile, now! Energy Ball then into Strong Style Leaf Blade!"
*GULP*
Sceptile, without hesitation, channeled the gathered life energy to form Energy Ball. Then gulped it down…
*SHIII*
Activating its Overgrow ability, its eyes narrowed as its leaf on its wrists glowed to life. Both leaves combined into a singular emerald green light as the Hyper Beam from Ninetales, still charging…
*SHINNG*
… was completely overwhelmed as Sceptile's Leaf Blade tore through the air, striking Ninetales head-on with devastating force. Ninetales screamed, blasted backwards into a tree, and was instantly knocked out.
*THUD*
With Sceptile's overwhelming attack, the tide had unequivocally turned. The battle raged, a chaotic dance of elemental powers amidst the outskirts of Mauville City.
Azure, despite being outnumbered by both trainers and Pokémon, fought with the seasoned precision of a champion. His Pokémon moved with fluid efficiency, following his commands, their attacks relentless.
*BOOOM*
The Grunts' Pokémon, facing an evolved Slaking, Shelgon, and Sceptile, along with Azure's already formidable Metang, Gardevoir, Ninetales, Golduck, Crawdaunt, Electrike, and the ever-reliable Pikachu and Eevee, began to falter.
Pikachu, seeing the opportunity, launched a powerful Thunderbolt that arced through the remaining Grunts' Pokémon, stunning several and knocking others out. Eevee, with a well-placed Swift, finished off a retreating Poochyena.
The Three Fires looked around at their battered team and their demoralized Grunts. Their initial arrogance had evaporated, replaced by a grim realization of Azure's true strength, even with his 'training' team.
Blaise snarled, recalling his Pokémon as he uttered with a fearful voice, "This… this isn't over, Champion! Team Magma will have its day!"
Courtney added, her voice chilling, but with a hint of respect in her eyes for his strategic prowess as she said cautiously, "We'll see you soon, Azure Sky. This was… an unexpected data point."
Tabitha, grumbling curses under his breath, also recalled his Pokémon grabbing a smoke bomb, "Let's go! Retreat!"
*BOOOM*
As swiftly as they had appeared, Team Magma's elite and their Grunts vanished back into the foliage, leaving behind only the lingering scent of smoke, the disturbed earth, and a field of defeated Pokémon. Azure didn't pursue them.
His objective was achieved. He looked at his exhausted Pokémon panting tiredly as he softly murmured, "Even if we chased after them, my team is too exhausted to continue after them…"
He walked among his Pokémon, surveying the scene. Slaking, after its initial burst of power, had already settled into a relaxed pose, looking around with a slightly dazed expression, as if wondering what all the fuss was about.
Shelgon, now more solid and powerful, stood proudly. Sceptile, lean, and radiating confidence, met Azure's gaze with unwavering loyalty.
He knelt beside Sceptile, gently running a hand over its sleek head. Azure said happily, his voice filled with pride, "You all did incredibly well. Sceptile, that was a magnificent evolution. Shelgon, you showed incredible resilience. And Slaking, your power is immense, we'll just have to work on your… timing."
Pikachu chattered in agreement from his shoulder, and Eevee nudged his hand. Azure looked out at the path ahead, the setting sun painting the sky.
The encounter with Team Magma wasn't a setback; it was a powerful affirmation of his path, and a rigorous, unexpected training session that had pushed his partners to new heights. His team, stronger and more united, was now truly ready for whatever the Hoenn region would throw their way.
