Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: Behind the Shadows of Treachery.

Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy of a quiet, unfamiliar forest. The rustling wind died down instantly as a tear of deep purple magic ruptured in midair, disgorging Morvana's group from the dimensional rift.

A tall, lanky humanoid creature landed heavily, still clutching the unconscious bodies of Zenless and Marcus in both hands. Kin'iro trailed behind, followed by Morvana stepping forward with poise, while Kaze Ryusei sheathed his nagamaki.

Before them, two men stood waiting in a small clearing.

The first stood tall, his face concealed behind a mask. Pitch-black hair reflected the sunlight, while his eyes behind the mask stared coldly, devoid of emotion—like a honed blade ready to strike.

Meanwhile, the second man sat casually atop a slab of ancient marble. His gloved right hand rested on an intricately ornamented cane. Soft platinum-blonde hair shimmered gently, complementing a subtle smile that radiated a formal, polite, yet deeply condescending aura.

"Welcome back," the blonde man's voice echoed smoothly, laden with authority. He gestured toward Zenless and Marcus. "It seems you've brought back quite an interesting souvenir, Morvana."

Morvana offered a faint smirk. "Just a small token from the battleground, Valen."

"Ah, I see..." Valen chuckled softly. His eyes then shifted toward Kaze, who stood silently beside him. "Yet I heard... there was a bit of emotional drama back there? Something regarding your little brother, Kaze?"

Morvana let out a cynical laugh, crossing her arms. "His weak little brother attacked without a second thought the moment he laid eyes on Kaze. Such a foolish, naive display. But what puzzles me... is that Kaze didn't kill him on the spot. If I were you, Kaze, a weak brother like that would have been slaughtered long ago."

SZZZT!

Before Morvana could finish her last word, a deadly chill swept through the air.

The long blade of a nagamaki was suddenly pressed precisely against the skin of Morvana's throat. The sword was held by Kaze, whose eyes had darkened completely, radiating a dense, suffocating murderous intent.

"Never again..." Kaze hissed in a voice cold enough to freeze blood. "...speak of my brother, or anything tied to my past. Or I will sever your head right here, Morvana."

The forest atmosphere instantly turned into a battleground. Yet Morvana's response was merely a wider, far more provocative smile. She slowly raised both hands in a mock gesture of surrender.

"Fair enough, fair enough... I take it back," Morvana whispered nonchalantly.

Kaze withdrew his sword with a harsh flick, slamming it back into its black sheath. Ignoring Morvana entirely, Kaze turned and approached the masked, black-haired man beside Valen, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Thank you for guiding us here with your teleportation magic, Williams," Kaze said curtly.

Williams gave a silent, cold nod without uttering a single word, his eyes fixed strictly ahead.

Kaze turned on his heel, heading toward the shadowy wood line.

"Where are you going, Kaze?" Valen called out from atop the stone. "We still have important matters to discuss."

"I need a moment of quiet," Kaze answered without looking back. His footsteps did not falter until his silhouette was swallowed by the thick trees.

Morvana sighed softly, adjusting her snow-white hair. "Old habits. Whenever someone touches upon his past, he loses his composure and walks off to find peace." She turned to Valen, her eyes brimming with curiosity. "Valen... do you know what actually happened in Kaze's past?"

Valen offered a subtle smile, his gaze sharp and unreadable. "Everyone harbors their own secrets, Morvana. And some things are better left locked away." Valen straightened his posture, stepping down from the marble slab. "Very well, let us begin our meeting without Kaze for now."

Elsewhere, before the completely pulverized gates of the Nexus.

Leon stood atop a mound of broken marble, looking up at the dozens of shadow warriors hovering before him.

"Your duty is fulfilled," Leon announced, his commanding voice echoing through the silence of the ruins.

The shadowy vanguard bowed in unison. Within a second, their phantom forms condensed into thick smoke and were drawn back into the rupturing seams of Void space opening around Leon, leaving the battlefield in absolute stillness.

Nix stepped closer, glancing at the physical state of Leon, Kazan, Zephyr, and Xuánhú, who were all teetering on the edge of utter exhaustion.

"It's time for us to return," Nix said firmly. "Since Leon is far too drained to force spatial teleportation, we'll take the sky route. Climb onto my back."

Kazan, having regained consciousness while clutching his bruised abdomen and walking with a slight limp, looked around the desolate field.

"What about the Princess of the Asmodeus Kingdom and the others?" Kazan asked softly. "Are they just to be left here?"

Nix gave a subtle nod. "Leave the Princess and the surviving soldiers be. Their energy has stabilized, and a rescue squad will surely arrive for them shortly. Our priority right now is securing our own retreat."

Nix took several steps back into the open clearing.

FLASH!

Nix's body was suddenly engulfed in a blinding golden glow. Waves of pure heat burst forth. Within seconds, his physical structure expanded and mutated—a majestic Phoenix with ablaze plumage of crimson fire and shimmering gold stood towering before them. Its massive wings unfurled, fanning waves of warm air across the ruined field.

"Climb up," Nix's echoing voice resonated from his Phoenix form.

Leon, Kazan, Zephyr, and Xuánhú vaulted up onto the expansive, warm back of the Phoenix.

With a single powerful beat of his wings, Nix launched high into the sky, tearing through the cloud cover toward the heavens. From above, the shattered city of Nocturne's End gradually shrank, until it became nothing more than a faint speck upon the vast horizon.
